Battery Health tells you whether macOS considers the battery’s condition normal; cycle count shows how much of its model-specific service life has been used.
Neither number is a universal pass/fail grade. Record the exact MacBook model, compare its count with Apple’s maximum-cycle table, and ask the seller about service or warranty coverage if the status is concerning.

What to check on a refurbished MacBook
macOS exposes two different battery indicators:
- Battery Health is a current status, such as Normal or Service Recommended.
- Cycle count is a cumulative measure of battery use. It must be compared with the maximum count for the exact MacBook model.
Run both checks. A Mac can show a normal status with a relatively high count, or a service warning before it reaches the model’s maximum. Looking at only one indicator can give a misleading picture of a refurbished computer.
Apple’s official instructions are in its battery-condition guide and its cycle-count article. Menu wording can change between macOS releases, so use the closest current label if your version is arranged differently.

Prepare before inspecting the Mac
Identify the exact model
Cycle limits vary by model and generation. On the MacBook, open Apple menu > About This Mac and record the model name, screen size, year or chip generation, and macOS version. If available, open System Information and note the model identifier as well. Do not rely on a seller’s broad description such as “MacBook Pro 2020”; different configurations can have different battery specifications.
Record evidence
Take screenshots or photographs of the Battery Health status, the cycle count, and the model-identification screen. Keep the readings with the listing, invoice, and the seller’s written battery-service terms. This gives you a reference if the machine arrives with a different status or if a return window is short.
Use the built-in checks first
These checks require no cable, paid diagnostic utility, or replacement part. They are available on a functioning MacBook and are the most useful first screen for a used purchase. They do not replace a real-world runtime test or a physical inspection for swelling, damage, or charging faults.

Step 1: Check Battery Health in macOS
- Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Select System Settings.
- Choose Battery in the sidebar.
- Read the value next to Battery Health.
Apple’s current guidance defines the two key results this way:

Apple also notes that a battery may not function normally even when you have not noticed a change in behavior or charge held. Treat the displayed status as an important diagnostic signal, not as a substitute for asking questions about the machine’s history.
What “Service Recommended” does and does not say
The message describes reduced charge-holding ability compared with a new battery. It does not, by itself, establish how long the Mac will run, why the capacity declined, or whether the refurbisher performed poor work. A high cycle count, age, heat exposure, and ordinary chemical aging can all be relevant, but the built-in message does not identify a cause.

Step 2: Find the battery cycle count
- Press and hold the Option key.
- While holding it, click the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the left sidebar, open Hardware, then select Power.
- Under Battery Information, read Cycle Count.

What counts as one cycle
A cycle is cumulative use of 100% of the battery’s capacity. It does not have to happen during one uninterrupted discharge. For example, using half the battery one day and recharging, then using half the battery another day, adds up to one cycle. The count therefore measures accumulated battery use rather than the number of times the charger was connected.
Because the count is cumulative, a Mac that is usually plugged in can show fewer cycles than one used away from a charger, even if both computers are the same age. Conversely, a relatively young refurbished Mac may have a substantial count if it was used heavily on battery power.
Compare the count with the correct maximum
There is no safe universal cutoff such as “under 500 is good.” Apple’s table assigns a maximum cycle count to each listed Mac laptop model. The table includes models with maximums of 300, 500, and 1,000 cycles, among other entries. Use the exact model and generation rather than transferring a limit from a similar-looking MacBook.

Apple describes a battery as consumed at its maximum cycle count. It also says the battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at that maximum. “Up to” is a design target, not a guarantee for an individual refurbished MacBook.
A useful comparison calculation

current cycle count ÷ model maximum cycle count × 100
For example, a count of 420 on a model rated for 500 cycles is 84% of that model’s maximum. The calculation helps you compare two machines only after their model-specific limits are known. It is not an Apple-defined pass/fail threshold, and it cannot predict exact runtime or remaining service life.
Interpret both readings together

These combinations are decision prompts, not diagnostic verdicts. A count alone does not prove that a refurbisher used an inferior part, and a Normal status does not guarantee the same runtime as a new battery.
What reaching the maximum cycle count means
Reaching the maximum does not make the MacBook unusable. Apple says battery life may be reduced at that point and recommends replacement for best performance. The computer can continue to operate, especially when connected to power, but you should expect that battery service may become part of ownership.
The 80% design statement describes capacity retention at the maximum cycle count under Apple’s design assumptions. It does not promise that every individual battery will measure exactly 80%, nor does it specify how many hours your workload will last. Bright displays, video calls, games, external devices, background processes, temperature, and battery age all affect runtime.
A refurbished-MacBook buying workflow
- Confirm identity. Match the physical computer and About This Mac information to the seller’s exact model, year or chip generation, storage, and memory listing.
- Open Battery Health. Record whether macOS shows Normal or Service Recommended.
- Open System Information. Record the cycle count under Hardware > Power > Battery Information.
- Find Apple’s matching limit. Use the model-specific entry in the cycle-count table; do not use a generic cutoff.
- Ask a written question if needed. If the status is Service Recommended or the count is near the limit, ask whether a compatible battery will be installed, whether service is included in the warranty, and who pays if the warning appears during the return period.
- Test unplugged operation. After recording the indicators, disconnect power and use the Mac for a consistent short period. Look for abrupt shutdowns, a rapidly falling percentage, charging that stops unexpectedly, or performance that changes sharply when unplugged.
- Check the physical condition. Do not continue using or charging a Mac with a visibly swollen case, lifted trackpad, or damaged battery area. Arrange professional service instead.
- Keep the evidence. Save the screenshots and the seller’s answers with your purchase records.
The request to ask about service and warranty coverage is practical buying advice. It is not an Apple warranty rule; coverage depends on the seller’s terms and the purchase region.

If the Mac shows Service Recommended
Before completing the purchase
Ask for the battery’s current capacity information if the seller can provide it, the date and type of any replacement, and the exact warranty remedy. A seller may offer a replacement, a price adjustment, or a return option. Get the promise in writing rather than relying on a chat message that disappears.

Photograph the status immediately and contact the seller within the stated return or warranty period. If replacement is appropriate, the part must match the exact MacBook model. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can assess and service the machine; a generic battery should not be assumed to fit every MacBook.
Do not erase the warning by resetting software
Reinstalling macOS or resetting settings does not restore lost battery capacity. The status reflects battery condition, so treat a persistent warning as a hardware-service question rather than a software-cleanup task.
Battery health management and charging behavior
Mac laptops with Apple silicon include battery-management features intended to reduce long-term wear. Apple explains the context in About battery health management in Mac laptops with Apple silicon. Management can alter charging behavior, but it does not change the meaning of the two checks: Battery Health remains the system’s condition status, and Cycle Count remains cumulative battery use.
A Mac that pauses charging below 100% or changes its charging pattern is not automatically defective. Evaluate the displayed health status, the model-specific cycle count, and actual unplugged behavior together.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the wrong model limit: identify the precise model before judging the count.
- Calling every high count “bad”: a high number is a reason to ask questions, not proof of poor refurbishment.
- Treating cycles as charge-plug events: one cycle represents cumulative use of the full capacity, not one connection to a charger.
- Expecting a runtime guarantee from 80%: Apple’s statement is a design target at the maximum count, not an individual runtime promise.
- Checking only Battery Health: always record the cycle count as well.
- Checking only the cycle count: a lower count does not override a Service Recommended message.
- Assuming a warning explains the cause: the status indicates reduced charge-holding ability, but not whether age, heat, usage, or a component fault caused it.
- Ignoring seller terms: Apple’s status does not tell you whether the refurbisher’s warranty covers a replacement.
- Relying on an app as the sole authority: start with macOS’s built-in readings and Apple’s model table.
- Skipping a physical inspection: software readings cannot identify a swollen enclosure or damaged battery.

When two listings appear similar, compare them in a structured record instead of picking the lower raw cycle count:

Only after filling in those fields should you compare the computers. A Mac with a higher raw count can be the more sensible purchase if its model has a higher maximum and the seller provides stronger service coverage; the opposite can also be true.
When a reading is missing or looks inconsistent
Battery Health is not visible
Confirm that you are in System Settings > Battery, not an older System Preferences layout. Install available macOS updates if appropriate, restart, and check again. If the Battery section still lacks a health status, ask the seller to explain the configuration and provide a service report rather than assuming the battery is healthy.
Cycle Count is unavailable
Repeat the Option-click path and select Hardware > Power, not another hardware category. If Battery Information does not show a count, request documentation from the seller and treat the missing built-in reading as unresolved before purchase.

Verify the model identifier and the table entry first. If both are correct, record the value exactly and ask the seller about battery replacement. Do not discard the Mac solely because it still operates, but price in the likelihood of service and consider the warranty before deciding.
The status and real-world behavior disagree
A Normal status does not guarantee long runtime, and a Service Recommended message may appear before a dramatic symptom. Use the status as one data point, then test charging, unplugged operation, and physical condition during the return period.
Checklist to save before buying
- Exact model name, generation, and model identifier recorded.
- Battery Health status photographed.
- Cycle Count photographed from Battery Information.
- Correct Apple maximum located for that exact model.
- Cycle percentage calculated only against that model’s maximum, if useful.
- Seller’s replacement, warranty, and return terms saved in writing.
- Unplugged charging and runtime behavior tested.
- Case, trackpad, and battery area checked for swelling or damage.
The key decision is not whether a number looks low in isolation. It is whether the Mac’s current status, model-specific cycle position, observed behavior, and service coverage make sense for the price and your intended use.
