How to Check a Photography Competition’s Rules on AI-Generated and AI-Edited Images

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not decide eligibility from a contest’s general FAQ, a previous year’s announcement, or the name of an editing tool. Open the official rules for the exact edition and category, then check the linked manipulation, judging, verification, and technical-file pages. Separate five questions: was the image generated instead of captured; did software add, remove, or reconstruct depicted information; did an enhancement change only the captured information; must AI use be disclosed; and can you supply the requested original files? If any wording is unclear, ask the organizer in writing before submitting and retain the reply.

Start with the exact edition and category

Photography competitions can change their AI policy from one edition to the next, and a single competition can apply different limits to different categories. A rule that permits compositing in a creative category does not automatically permit it in documentary, news, wildlife, or landscape categories. Treat the edition year, category name, and official rule version as part of the eligibility test.

Find the controlling documents

Begin at the competition’s official entry page. Locate the current rules, category descriptions, judging guidance, manipulation examples, image-use terms, and verification or technical-requirements pages. A general “frequently asked questions” page may be useful for orientation, but it should not replace the signed rules or the category-specific conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the page’s own search function or your browser’s find command for these terms: AI, artificial intelligence, generative, synthetic, generative fill, editing, manipulation, composite, retouching, original file, RAW, and disclosure. Also search for “added,” “removed,” “reconstructed,” “upscale,” “interpolation,” “content-aware,” and “metadata.” Rules may use ordinary photographic language instead of the word AI.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Record what you found

Save the rule page or PDF and record its edition, category, publication or revision date, and the date you checked it. Keep a local copy if the organizer allows downloads, because web pages can change during an entry period. Note the URL exactly as shown by the organizer. If a PDF links to separate verification instructions, save those too.

Break “AI editing” into the action it performed

“AI-edited” is not a single technical or legal category. Eligibility normally turns on what changed in the picture, not on whether a feature was marketed as artificial intelligence. Classify every operation in your workflow before comparing it with the rules.

Operation What it can do Question to ask the rules
Fully generated image Creates a picture without a camera capture of the depicted scene. Does the category require a camera-made photograph or prohibit synthetic images?
Generative fill or expansion Invents pixels beyond or within the captured frame. Are generative additions, extensions, or replacements expressly banned?
Object or person removal Deletes camera-captured information and fills the gap. Does the manipulation rule prohibit removing, concealing, or reconstructing subjects?
Object or person addition Introduces information that the camera did not record. Are added elements or composites allowed in this category?
Rearranging, reversing, or distorting Changes the position, orientation, or appearance of depicted content. Does the organizer treat these as content manipulation even if no generative tool was used?
Denoising and automatic tonal correction Alters noise, exposure, color, contrast, or local selections without intentionally adding a new subject. Are enhancements allowed only when they do not significantly change the image as a whole?
AI enlargement or reconstruction Upscales a file while estimating detail that was not recorded at capture. Does the rule treat inferred detail as newly introduced information?
Disclosure-only use Leaves the image within the category’s technical limits but requires a statement about tools or edits. Where, when, and in what format must disclosure be made?

Make a complete edit inventory, including automatic features that ran in the background. A tool’s label is not conclusive: the same application can perform a permitted tonal adjustment or a prohibited content-generating replacement.

Read the rules as a stack, not a single sentence

Eligibility language

First identify the baseline capture requirement. Wording such as “camera-made photograph,” “captured by the entrant,” or “no synthetic images” addresses whether a photograph must originate in a camera exposure. A rule may still permit ordinary processing after capture, so do not treat a camera requirement as an automatic ban on every AI-assisted adjustment.

Manipulation examples

Next read the organizer’s examples of unacceptable manipulation. They often explain how the broad rule is applied: adding, deleting, moving, reversing, distorting, or reconstructing people and objects can be treated differently from exposure, color, or noise corrections. Examples are especially important when the main rule uses a phrase such as “substantial alteration” or “truthful representation.”

Disclosure and technical requirements

Finally check whether the contest requires an AI declaration, a process statement, a layered file, an unedited export, RAW data, camera metadata, or a sequence of neighboring frames. A disclosure form does not legalize an otherwise prohibited image; it only satisfies a separate transparency requirement.

What current official rules demonstrate

World Press Photo: a camera-origin rule with narrow enhancement space

The World Press Photo entry rules reviewed on 13 October 2026 state: “No synthetic or artificially generated images are allowed, and no use of artificially generative fill is allowed in post-production.” Read the full World Press Photo entry rules for the edition and category you are entering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same rules allow smart or AI-powered enhancement only when it does not significantly change the image as a whole, introduce new information, or remove information captured by the camera. The examples given are limited use of Denoise, automatic level, color, and contrast adjustments, and object selection for local adjustments. The organization and its global jury determine where the limit lies; the examples are not a blanket approval for every setting or strength.

The rule set specifically identifies AI-powered enlargement tools, including Adobe Super Resolution and Topaz Photo AI, as immediate breaches because they introduce new information. That is a decision about the effect of inferred detail under these rules, not a universal classification of every upscaler in every competition.

World Press Photo’s separate manipulation guidance says that adding, rearranging, reversing, distorting, or removing people or objects makes an entry ineligible for an award. Significant color or tonal changes may be referred to the global jury. The guidance confirms why you must read both the rule text and its examples.

World Press Photo verification: preserve the capture, not just the export

Under the World Press Photo verification process, an image that remains in the contest and is eligible to progress may be selected during the stated judging window for a request for camera-recorded originals. Accepted examples include a RAW file; a full-format JPEG delivered by the camera with a sequence of at least seven frames; a smartphone original with a sequence; or an unprocessed positive-film scan with a contact sheet. The page says that failure to provide required files leads to elimination, and that two independent digital analysts compare original files with contest entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are requirements of that contest and edition, not a universal seven-frame rule. They are nevertheless a useful warning: retain your camera originals, neighboring frames, and an export that matches what you submitted.

World Photographic Cup 2026: category wording changes the answer

The 2026 World Photographic Cup rules prohibit AI or CGI elements in multiple categories, while allowing different forms of editing and compositing elsewhere. For example, Nature Landscape permits specified adjustments but disallows added, deleted, or moved elements. Another category may set a different boundary. The committee may request RAW or JPEG files containing original camera EXIF data to confirm eligibility.

Do not quote a permission from one World Photographic Cup category as evidence for another. Read the clause under the category in which your image will actually be judged.

Sony World Photography Awards: an absence of wording is not permission

The accessible Sony World Photography Awards Single Image page reviewed here describes entry and image-use terms, but the accessible text did not establish a current AI-specific eligibility rule. That absence does not prove that AI generation or editing is allowed or prohibited. Read the complete current terms for the exact award and category, or ask the organizer for a written decision before entering.

Contest example Generation and content alteration Enhancement Originals or verification
World Press Photo Synthetic images and generative fill prohibited; adding, removing, rearranging, reversing, or distorting depicted content is ineligible. Limited smart or AI enhancement may be possible if it does not significantly change the whole image, add information, or remove captured information. May request RAW, camera JPEG with at least seven-frame sequence, smartphone originals with sequence, or unprocessed positive-film scan with contact sheet; noncompliance leads to elimination.
World Photographic Cup 2026 AI/CGI restrictions and compositing rules vary by category; Nature Landscape disallows added, deleted, or moved elements. Specified adjustments can be allowed in some categories. Committee may request RAW or JPEG with original camera EXIF data.
Sony World Photography Awards Single Image page reviewed Current AI-specific eligibility was not established by the accessible page text. Not stated on the reviewed page. Read the full current terms or obtain a written answer.

A step-by-step eligibility check before you submit

  1. Identify the target. Write down the exact competition edition, category, subcategory, and submission deadline.
  2. Collect the authoritative pages. Save the current rules, category description, manipulation guidance, verification procedure, technical specifications, and any mandatory declaration form.
  3. Mark operative words. Highlight “camera-made,” “synthetic,” “generative,” “added,” “removed,” “composite,” “significant,” “original,” “RAW,” “EXIF,” and “disclose.”
  4. Inventory every edit. List the application, plug-in, automatic feature, and setting used from capture through final export. Include crop, perspective correction, healing, cloning, sky replacement, object selection, denoise, sharpening, and enlargement.
  5. Classify the effect. For each operation, state whether it generated, added, removed, moved, reconstructed, or merely adjusted camera-captured information.
  6. Compare with the category clause. Apply the strictest applicable condition. If a category bans added elements, a generative sky, even one that looks realistic, remains an added element.
  7. Check disclosure. Complete the organizer’s AI or process declaration exactly as requested. If no form exists, do not assume silence means no disclosure is needed.
  8. Prepare originals. Keep the RAW or camera JPEG, final submitted export, relevant adjacent frames or contact sheet, and original metadata. Do not overwrite the capture with an edited file.
  9. Resolve uncertainty in writing. Send the organizer a concise description of the operation and ask whether the resulting image is eligible for the named category. Ask a follow-up if the answer addresses only disclosure but not eligibility.
  10. Archive the decision. Save the organizer’s reply with the rule version and your edit inventory. If the rules change, request confirmation again.

Build a defensible file package

Organizers do not all request the same material, so treat this as a retention checklist rather than a universal submission requirement.

  • Camera original: the untouched RAW or the full-format JPEG delivered by the camera.
  • Supporting sequence: adjacent frames that show what was present immediately before and after the submitted exposure, when available.
  • Final export: the exact file uploaded to the contest, with its filename and export date.
  • Metadata record: original EXIF and a note of any export process that may have stripped it.
  • Edit log: software, tools, dates, and operations, including automated or AI-assisted features.
  • Film evidence: for film work, retain the unprocessed positive scan and a contact sheet if the contest uses that form of verification.
  • Written correspondence: the organizer’s answer, linked rule page, and the date checked.

Keep a second copy of these files on separate storage. No competition rule discussed here requires buying a particular storage product; the goal is simply to avoid losing the evidence needed for verification.

How to ask an organizer when the rule is ambiguous

Ask before submission, identify the category, and describe the effect rather than relying on a product name. A useful message is short enough to receive a direct answer but detailed enough to prevent misunderstanding:

Subject: AI-edit eligibility for {{competition}}, {{edition}}, {{category}}

I plan to enter a photograph captured with a camera. I used {{software/tool}} for {{specific operation}}. The operation {{added/removed/reconstructed/adjusted}} {{content or captured information}}. No other AI-assisted operation was used.

Does this image meet the eligibility rule for {{category}}? If it is eligible, do you require an AI or editing disclosure, the camera original, RAW/EXIF data, or supporting frames?

Please identify the current rule or category clause that applies. Thank you.

Keep the answer in its original form. A verbal comment at a workshop or a reply about a different edition is not a reliable substitute for written confirmation tied to your category.

Common traps and what to do instead

Relying on an old article

Problem: A blog post or previous-year PDF says AI is allowed, but the current category rules changed. Fix: use the current official edition and record its revision date.

Assuming “AI-assisted” means harmless

Problem: A denoise or upscale button is treated as equivalent to a color correction. Fix: determine whether the process introduced inferred detail or removed captured information, then apply the category’s effect-based rule.

Believing disclosure cures a violation

Problem: The entrant declares generative fill and assumes transparency makes the file eligible. Fix: treat disclosure and eligibility as separate tests.

Editing the only original

Problem: The camera file is overwritten, metadata is stripped, or the sequence is discarded. Fix: preserve an untouched original and export a separate submission file before editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a different category’s permission

Problem: A compositing allowance in a creative category is applied to documentary or landscape. Fix: quote the clause under the exact category you selected.

Interpreting silence as approval

Problem: The accessible page never says “AI,” so the entrant assumes every AI operation is permitted. Fix: read the full terms and ask the organizer when the policy is not stated.

Use a yes-or-no decision grid

Question If yes If no or unknown
Was the picture generated without a camera capture of the depicted scene? Enter only if the exact category expressly permits generated work. Continue to the editing questions.
Did a tool add, remove, move, reverse, distort, or reconstruct depicted information? Check the manipulation clause; many categories treat this as ineligible. Continue to enhancement questions.
Did an enhancement introduce inferred detail or remove camera-captured information? Look for an explicit ban on reconstruction or enlargement. Check whether limited enhancement is allowed.
Does the organizer require disclosure? Submit the declaration in the specified field or format. Keep a process record anyway in case verification occurs.
Can you provide the required original, metadata, or sequence? Archive it with the final export. Do not submit until you know whether an alternative is accepted.
Is the wording still ambiguous after reading all linked pages? Ask for written clarification and retain it. Apply the documented rule and keep your evidence.

If you discover a problem after submission

Do not silently replace the file or delete the edit history. Re-read the edition and category rules, document exactly what happened, and contact the organizer promptly. Ask whether the file can be withdrawn or corrected and follow the organizer’s process. If the contest requests originals during judging, respond within its stated window; the World Press Photo process, for example, says that failure to provide required files leads to elimination.

If an organizer confirms that an operation breaches the rule, withdraw the entry when possible rather than allowing a later verification failure or disqualification. Keep the written decision with your records so the same workflow is not reused in another category without a fresh check.

One-minute final checklist

  • Correct edition, category, and current rule version identified
  • Generation, content alteration, enhancement, disclosure, and verification clauses read
  • Every automated and AI-assisted operation listed
  • Effect classified as added, removed, reconstructed, or adjusted information
  • Required declaration completed
  • Untouched camera original and relevant sequence retained
  • Final submitted export preserved separately
  • Original metadata and any requested EXIF retained
  • Ambiguous points answered by the organizer in writing
  • Rule page, date checked, and correspondence archived

The safest interpretation is not “AI is allowed” or “AI is banned.” It is the narrower conclusion supported by the current wording for your edition and category: identify what the software changed, compare that effect with the manipulation and enhancement clauses, disclose it when required, and be ready to prove the image’s camera origin with the files the organizer specifies.
