Before paying for a new or used phone, verify three things against the exact device: whether its warranty or protection plan covers you, whether it can be activated on your carrier in your country, and how long its maker will provide software and security updates. You’ll need the phone’s exact model or variant for all three checks, and usually its IMEI or serial number for coverage and carrier checks. A phone described as “unlocked” is not automatically compatible with every carrier.
Start with the exact phone and your intended carrier
Ask for the exact model number or regional variant, the IMEI, and—when checking warranty—the serial number and original purchase documentation. Confirm that the identifiers shown in the phone’s settings match the device and paperwork. A dual-SIM phone may have more than one IMEI, so use the identifier requested by the relevant checker.

Write down the destination country and carrier before checking compatibility. A marketing name such as “Galaxy S” or “Pixel” is not specific enough: variants in the same family can differ in supported bands, carrier features, software configuration, or eligibility.

- Coverage check: original purchase date and proof, plus the plan’s transfer terms if the phone is used.
- Update check: the exact model’s official support commitment and the installed security patch date.
Check whether the phone is still under warranty
Use the manufacturer’s official coverage channel for the phone’s region. For Apple devices, you can view AppleCare & Warranty in Settings; selecting the device shows its coverage details, including the expiry date. Apple also provides account-based support tools. See Apple’s warranty and AppleCare guidance.

For other manufacturers, contact the official regional support service or use its warranty portal. Give it the exact identifier and purchase documentation, and ask it to confirm the coverage start and end dates, what is covered, and whether service is available in your country. Warranty length, transferability, and international service can vary by country and product; do not infer them from another region’s policy.
For a used phone, check who owns the plan
Ask whether any extended protection or manufacturer plan is tied to the original purchaser’s account, and get confirmation that it transfers to you. Ask the seller to state in writing what coverage is included and what return rights apply if the coverage check does not match the listing. A device showing a valid plan does not by itself establish that you can claim under it.

Find out whether it will work on your carrier
Start with the intended carrier’s own bring-your-own-device or eligibility checker, using the IMEI before payment whenever possible. These checks can catch issues that a list of supported frequencies cannot, including carrier restrictions or activation eligibility.
Run the IMEI check and verify unlock status
Verizon’s BYOD checker accepts an IMEI and can distinguish compatible devices from devices locked to another carrier, devices reported lost or stolen, or unsupported devices. Use Verizon’s BYOD checker if Verizon is the destination carrier. AT&T likewise directs customers to check compatibility and confirm that a phone is unlocked before bringing it over; see AT&T’s BYOD guidance and its IMEI check.

Ask the seller to demonstrate that the phone is unlocked and not subject to an unpaid installment or another carrier restriction. If you receive a screenshot or result from a seller, rerun the check yourself before purchase when possible. If the seller will not provide an IMEI for a carrier check, treat compatibility as unresolved and only proceed with a protected return window.
Check bands and carrier features for the precise variant
Passing an IMEI check is an important gate, but it does not mean every network mode or feature will work in every location. Compare the exact model’s LTE and 5G bands and voice features with the carrier’s requirements. A phone can support some of a carrier’s bands yet lack a required feature, carrier provisioning, or a supported 5G configuration.

Check the current details in Google Fi’s phone compatibility and technical requirements. Google also cautions that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on every 5G network and recommends checking with the carrier; see Google Pixel’s carrier guidance.

Determine how long updates will continue
Find the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model and region. Look for the promised final operating-system and security-update dates, update cadence, and any distinction for carrier or regional variants. Do not assume a brand-wide statement applies equally to every model.
On the phone, check the installed operating-system version and security patch date, then check for pending updates. On a Samsung Galaxy, the carrier and software configuration can be inspected under Settings > About phone > Software information. Samsung explains how to identify that configuration in its Galaxy carrier-change support instructions.
Update availability is not always the same as update support. Samsung’s Knox documentation says devices can receive updates on different cadences and describes carrier testing before firmware release, so a supported update may arrive at a different time depending on model and carrier configuration. See Samsung Knox’s software lifecycle and updates guidance. Record the model-specific security-support end date rather than estimating from the phone’s age or the maker’s general reputation.

Hold the destination country and carrier constant, then compare the specific variants—not just the product-family names.

What an “unlocked” label does—and does not—tell you
Unlocked status addresses whether the phone is restricted to a particular carrier. It does not establish that the model supports the bands, 5G modes, voice features, or provisioning path required by your carrier. Treat the label as one part of the check: confirm unlock status, run the carrier’s IMEI checker, and verify the exact variant’s network requirements before paying.
