No AI detector can prove who wrote a paper. A defensible check combines the paper’s claims and sources, the writer’s drafting history, the rules that applied, and—only if useful—a detector report treated as a limited signal. The reviewer must give the writer a chance to explain and must not take adverse action from a detector score alone.
The goal is a fair authorship review, not a forensic shortcut. A score can point to passages worth examining, but it cannot answer whether assistance was permitted, who entered the words, or what the writer intended.

Start by defining what you are trying to establish
“Was AI used?” is not always the same question as “Was a policy broken?” A school, publisher, or employer may prohibit ghostwriting while allowing brainstorming, translation, accessibility assistance, spelling correction, or language editing. Read the policy that was in force when the paper was written, not a newer rule introduced afterward.

Write down the conduct the rule actually addresses. Some policies regulate submitting machine-generated prose as one’s own; others regulate undisclosed assistance, fabricated citations, or use of a particular tool during an assessment. A stylistic impression cannot establish any of those facts. If the rule is unclear, resolve that ambiguity before evaluating the writer.

Also identify the assignment’s scope. A paper written for an open-book project, a supervised examination, and a workplace publication may have different standards. Translation or text-to-speech support can be essential access accommodations in one setting and restricted assistance in another. The relevant question is whether the particular help complied with the rule that governed this work.
Set a consistent evidentiary standard
Use the same process for comparable cases, including the same opportunity to respond. A detector result should never lower the standard of proof simply because it looks numerical. Record why a concern arose, what evidence was reviewed, and how the applicable policy was interpreted.
Before testing anything, make a short case record: the assignment or manuscript version, the governing policy and date, the reviewer, and the specific question being investigated. This prevents a later score from becoming the whole case and makes an appeal possible if the decision is challenged.
Read the paper for substance before opening a detector
Begin with ordinary editorial or academic review. This often identifies questions that can be answered directly, without treating prose style as forensic evidence.
Check claims and citations
- Verify that important claims are supported by the cited sources.
- Open each key source and confirm that it actually contains the information attributed to it.
- Look for citations to nonexistent articles, incorrect page numbers, or quotations that do not appear in the source.
- Check whether a source is being used for a claim outside its scope or date range.
- Distinguish a factual or citation error from proof of AI use. People make these errors without AI, and AI-assisted writing can contain accurate citations.
When a citation is questionable, show the writer the source and ask what happened. A mistaken page number, an inaccessible article, or a citation-manager error may have an ordinary explanation. A pattern of fabricated references deserves closer examination, but it still does not identify the authoring method on its own.
Check the argument and subject knowledge
Assess whether the thesis, evidence, and conclusions fit together. Note unexplained changes in terminology, reasoning that skips necessary steps, or a conclusion that does not follow from the evidence. These are reasons to ask ordinary questions about the work; they do not identify who typed the sentences.
Mark the precise passages that raise a substantive question instead of labeling the entire document “AI-like.” Then ask whether the writer can explain the underlying concept, evidence selection, and limits of the conclusion. Understanding can support a process account, but an awkward explanation is not conclusive proof of misconduct either.

Account for genre and language
Formulaic wording can be normal in a lab report, literature review, legal memo, or second-language draft. Compare the paper with the assignment and the writer’s permitted materials rather than with an imagined “human” style. Do not infer misconduct from fluency, unusual vocabulary, or a sudden improvement alone.

Consider who wrote the text and in what language. A polished paragraph may reflect editing, tutoring, translation, or repeated practice. Conversely, grammatical mistakes do not certify human authorship. Style is context, not an authorship test.
Review provenance and the writing process
When records exist and policy permits, process evidence is more informative than a single classification score because it lets the writer explain how the work developed.
Useful records to request
- Earlier drafts, outlines, notes, and source annotations.
- Document or learning-platform version history showing changes over time.
- Working notes, saved articles, data files, or citation-manager records that relate to the final argument.
- A description of which tools were used for permitted tasks such as translation, accessibility, or copy editing.
- Draft comments or feedback that explain why sections were reorganized or rewritten.
Compare changes over time rather than demanding a single “original” draft. A normal process may include large revisions after instructor comments or language editing. At the same time, a file created immediately before submission is only one contextual fact, not automatic proof that prohibited assistance occurred.

A missing draft is not proof of misconduct. If a platform stores version history, limit access to the relevant assignment and follow the institution’s privacy and retention rules.
Ask explanation-based questions
Invite the writer to explain why a source was chosen, how a claim was developed, what changed between drafts, and why a particular revision was made. Questions should test understanding of the submitted work, not require the writer to reproduce it from memory. Consider the answers alongside the paper and the policy; process evidence is contextual, not a standalone authorship test.
Use open questions rather than an interrogation built around a detector’s wording: “How did you move from this source to this conclusion?” is more useful than “Why does this sentence score as AI?” Give the writer the relevant passages and enough time to gather permitted records.
If you use a detector, document exactly what it measured
Different services define “AI score” differently. Save the report and record the details needed to interpret it later. A detector is optional; no consumer purchase is needed to follow this review process. Turnitin’s AI Writing Report, for example, is an institutional software service, so access, account terms, and retention rules come from the institution and its contract.
- Identify the product and report date. Product names, models, and reporting rules change. Keep the original report rather than relying on a screenshot of a number.
- Record the model or version when shown. A release-history entry can mark a material change in how text is classified, so a result from one date may not be comparable with a later result.
- Record language and text scope. Note the document language, the amount of qualifying prose, and whether quotations, references, code, or tables were excluded. A score calculated from a small or unusual text sample has a different context from one calculated from a long essay.
- Save the passages identified. Review the exact highlights or categories, including whether the service distinguishes likely AI-generated text from text that was subsequently AI-paraphrased.
- Read the current product documentation. Check how the service defines its percentage, what its minimum text requirements are, and what warnings it gives about false positives and false negatives.
- Check handling of submitted papers. Before uploading confidential work, review who can access the text, how long it is retained, whether it may be used to improve a service, and how deletion requests work under the applicable agreement.
Do not alter the paper to chase a lower score and then treat the changed score as a new authorship finding. If you must test a revised file, keep both versions, note every change, and explain why the comparison is being made.

Interpret a percentage as a classification signal, not a probability
A detector percentage is not the probability that the writer used AI. It is a model’s estimate under that product’s method and threshold. A 60 percent result does not mean there is a 60 percent chance of cheating, and a zero result does not mean there is a zero chance of AI assistance.
What Turnitin’s percentage means
Turnitin describes its percentage as the share of qualifying text that its system identified as likely AI-generated or likely AI-generated and AI-paraphrased. That wording describes text classification; it does not identify the person who produced the text, the assistance they received, or their intent.
Why low Turnitin results need special care
Turnitin’s current AI Writing Report guidance says its testing found a higher incidence of false positives when results fall between 0% and 19%. Under that guidance, reports do not attribute a precise score or highlights to results above 0% and below 20%; older reports may display exact values in that range. This is Turnitin’s reporting policy, not a universal cutoff for every detector. A number from another product cannot be translated using Turnitin’s scale.

Language and version can change the meaning
Turnitin states that its English model includes AI-paraphrasing and bypasser detection, while its Spanish and Japanese models do not currently include those capabilities. Its release history records model changes. Before interpreting a result, check the language, model version, and report date shown in the documentation. Do not treat an English result as evidence about how the same system performs on another language.
False negatives matter too
A detector can fail to flag AI-generated or AI-paraphrased writing. Editing, translation, paraphrasing, short passages, and changes in model behavior can affect what is identified. Therefore, a low or absent score cannot certify human authorship, just as a high score cannot establish a policy violation.
Understand the documented risk of false positives
Published evaluations show why a detector flag requires independent review. In a 14 July 2023 Patterns study by Liang and colleagues, seven tested GPT detectors evaluated 91 human-written TOEFL essays by non-native English writers and 88 essays by US eighth-grade students. Across the TOEFL essays, the average false-positive rate was 61.3%; at least one detector flagged 97.8% of that sample as AI-generated.
Those figures apply to the tools, texts, population, and testing period in that study. They are not a universal estimate for every current detector, language, genre, or student group. They do, however, demonstrate why a high-looking score cannot substitute for evidence about a particular paper. The findings also show why language background and educational context belong in a fair review rather than being treated as noise.
Do not treat several detectors as independent confirmation
Running the same passage through multiple services may produce several numbers, but agreement does not prove correctness. Services can rely on similar training data, linguistic features, thresholds, or assumptions and therefore share weaknesses. The evidence does not establish that their outputs are statistically independent.

Using more tools also creates practical risks: different products may retain uploaded papers, define qualifying text differently, or expose confidential student or author work to additional parties. If policy permits comparison, document each product separately and avoid presenting a tally as a probability.
If you compare services, compare their purpose and documentation rather than counting flags. Ask:
- Who was the tool designed for, and what population and genres were tested?
- Which languages and scripts are supported by the current model?
- What model or release date produced the report?
- How much qualifying text is required, and what text is excluded?
- Does the service address AI-paraphrased or edited text, and how does it label that category?
- What does the score represent, and which thresholds or low-score warnings apply?
- Has performance been independently validated on relevant populations, with datasets and methods disclosed?
- What are the privacy, retention, and deletion terms for submitted papers?
- What human review, notification, and appeal process accompanies a flag?
There is no established current ranking that makes one product a universal adjudicator across disciplines, languages, and genres. A comparison is useful for understanding limitations, not for manufacturing certainty.
Use a fair response process when a paper is flagged
For teachers, editors, and managers
- Preserve the original evidence. Keep the submitted file, the detector report, the report date, and the policy version that governs the case.
- Describe the concern neutrally. Identify the passages, citation questions, or process gaps without asserting that the writer cheated.
- Invite a response. Give the writer a reasonable opportunity to explain sources, revisions, permitted tool use, and any unusual passages.
- Review the whole record. Weigh substantive accuracy, provenance, the explanation, and the policy together. Do not let a detector score override contradictory evidence.
- Apply the policy consistently. Use the same decision rule and appeal route used in comparable cases, and document the reasoning.
- Keep the decision proportional. If the record supports only a citation correction or a teaching intervention, do not impose a penalty reserved for deliberate ghostwriting.
Turnitin’s own guide states: “Our AI writing detection model may not always be accurate (it may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text), so it should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student.” Treat that warning as a process requirement, not as a footnote.
For students and authors who receive a flag
- Ask which policy, report date, model, language setting, and passages are at issue.
- Provide drafts, notes, version history, and source records that you are allowed to share.
- Explain any permitted assistance, such as translation, accessibility support, or editing, accurately and specifically.
- Walk through the argument, evidence, and revisions in your own words.
- Ask how confidential files will be handled and what review or appeal deadlines apply.
- Use the institution’s review or appeal procedure and keep copies of all communications.
Do not respond by claiming that every detector is useless or that a single score proves innocence. Focus on the actual evidence and the rule that applies to your work.
What a detector can and cannot establish
| A detector report can provide | It cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|
| A model’s classification of features in the submitted text under a stated language, version, and threshold | Who typed the text or whether a particular person used an AI system |
| Passages or categories the service considers likely AI-generated or AI-paraphrased | What assistance was used, when it was used, or whether that assistance violated a policy |
| A prompt for closer review of claims, sources, drafting history, and the writer’s explanation | The writer’s intent, knowledge, or responsibility for an error |
| A record that can be compared with the product’s current documentation | A universal probability of cheating, an authorship verdict, or a reliable ranking of all detectors |
Design the institution’s process around human review
UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research, published 7 September 2023, says: “However, there is little evidence that these measures or tools are effective.” The statement concerns labels and tools intended to identify AI-produced material. The guidance identifies rigorous human detection as an immediate institutional approach and recommends longer-term redesign of assignments.
In practice, that means making expectations explicit, teaching acceptable and unacceptable assistance, and assessing work in ways that reveal understanding: staged drafts, source annotations, oral explanations, reflections on revisions, or supervised components where appropriate. These measures do not create a perfect authorship test, but they reduce the weight placed on an opaque score and give writers a fairer way to demonstrate their work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPolicies should also state who may access detector reports, how long files are retained, how a student or author can appeal, and what evidence is sufficient for an adverse decision. Clear procedures protect both the person whose work is questioned and the reviewer who must explain the decision.
Best Value
A repeatable checklist
- Confirm the policy and the distinction between prohibited ghostwriting and permitted assistance.
- Read the paper for claims, sources, reasoning, genre, and language context.
- Collect drafts and version history when available and permitted.
- Ask explanation-based questions about evidence, decisions, and revisions.
- If a detector is used, save the product, date, model, language, qualifying text amount, and flagged passages.
- Interpret the score according to that product’s definition; never convert it into a probability of authorship.
- Check current documentation for model changes, language coverage, paraphrase handling, and low-score warnings.
- Review privacy, retention, and deletion terms before uploading confidential text.
- Do not combine detector outputs as if they were independent confirmations.
- Give the writer a meaningful opportunity to explain and appeal.
- Base any decision on the complete record and the applicable policy, never on a detector result alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if a paper was written by AI?
You cannot establish that from style or one score. Check the paper’s claims and citations, review drafts or version history when permitted, ask the writer to explain evidence and revisions, and use any detector only as a limited prompt for closer review.
Can Turnitin prove that a student used AI?
No. Turnitin classifies qualifying text under its model and reporting rules. Its own guidance says the model may misidentify human-written, AI-generated, and AI-paraphrased text and should not be the sole basis for adverse action. A policy-based human review is required.
What does a Turnitin AI percentage mean?
It is the share of qualifying text Turnitin identifies as likely AI-generated or likely AI-generated and AI-paraphrased. It is not the probability that the student used AI or violated a rule. Current guidance suppresses precise scores and highlights for results above 0% and below 20% because of false-positive concerns; that is not a universal cutoff for other services.
What should I do if an AI detector flags my paper?
Ask for the governing policy, report date, model, language, and flagged passages. Gather drafts, notes, source records, and version history you are allowed to share. Explain permitted assistance accurately, discuss your argument and revisions, and use the institution’s review or appeal process.
Should I run my paper through several detectors?
More scores do not create independent confirmation. Products may share data, features, thresholds, and weaknesses, and uploading work to multiple services can create privacy risks. If comparison is permitted, document each tool’s purpose, version, language coverage, score definition, validation, and retention terms rather than counting flags.
Are AI detectors biased against some writers?
They can produce disparate false positives. Liang and colleagues’ 14 July 2023 Patterns study found a 61.3% average false-positive rate across seven tested detectors on 91 human-written TOEFL essays by non-native English writers; at least one detector flagged 97.8% of that sample. Those results apply to that study’s tools and texts, not every current system.
The Bottom Line
Use a detector, if at all, as a limited signal. A fair decision rests on the applicable policy, the paper’s substance, drafting and source records, the writer’s explanation, and a consistent opportunity to appeal—not on one number or a stack of matching numbers.
