How to Check a Nigerian Stock’s Market Capitalization and Trading Volume

To check a Nigerian stock’s market capitalization, use its market price and outstanding shares for the same security and date: market capitalization = market price × outstanding shares. To check trading volume, find the traded-volume figure for that security and the reporting period you care about. Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) provides a starting point in its Data Library, which lists equity resources including Market Capitalization, Shares Outstanding, the Daily Official List (Equities), and Daily Summary. NGX labels the library display as 30 minutes delayed, not live.

What the figures tell you

Market capitalization is the market value represented by a company’s outstanding shares at a particular share price. It is a snapshot, not a fixed measure of what the company is worth in every sense. If the market price changes while the number of outstanding shares stays the same, the calculated capitalization changes too.

Trading volume answers a different question: how many shares traded during a stated period. It describes trading activity, not the company’s size. NGX lists traded volume separately from traded value and number of transactions, so identify which measure you are reporting.

  • Market capitalization: a price multiplied by a share count.
  • Traded volume: the number of shares traded over the relevant period.
  • Traded value: the monetary value of the trading activity.
  • Number of transactions: the count of trades or transactions reported in the data.

These measures are not interchangeable. A high traded volume does not by itself tell you a company’s market capitalization, and a transaction count is not a share count.

How to check a stock on NGX

  1. Identify the exact listed security. Confirm the company or security name and use the corresponding equity record. Keep the security consistent when comparing price, volume, shares outstanding, and capitalization.
  2. Open the NGX Data Library. Look for its Daily Official List (Equities), Market Capitalization, Shares Outstanding, and Daily Summary resources. The library lists these as separate data resources; use the fields relevant to your question rather than assuming one file contains every figure.
  3. Check the date and timing label. NGX marks the Data Library display “30 MINUTES DELAYED DATA.” Treat it as delayed, not as a live quote. Note the date or reporting period shown for each figure.
  4. Find the market-cap figure or calculate it. If you have a market-capitalization value for the security and date you need, record it along with its date. If you are calculating it yourself, multiply the relevant market price by outstanding shares for that same security and date.
  5. Find the volume field for the period you need. Use the traded-volume field, not traded value or transaction count. State whether the figure is for a trading day or another period shown by the data product; do not present a daily figure as if it covered a longer period.
  6. Record the source and basis. When saving or sharing the result, include the security, value, currency or unit where shown, date or period, and source. For an NGX Data Library figure, note that the displayed data are marked 30 minutes delayed.

A useful worksheet has one row per security and date, with columns for the exact security name, market price, outstanding shares, calculated or published market capitalization, traded volume, traded value, transaction count, source, and timing. Keeping these fields together makes it easier to spot a mixed-date calculation or a unit error later.

Before calculating, check whether the source displays the price in naira per share and the share count as a number of shares. If a report abbreviates a quantity or presents capitalization in a larger naira unit, preserve that convention in your notes and state it when reporting the result. The arithmetic is only meaningful when the units are consistent.

The SEC Nigeria describes the Daily Official List as a document for quoted equities and debt that is updated daily after trading. Its equity section includes the current market price and other security and company information, making it useful for an end-of-day lookup. That end-of-day context is distinct from the NGX Data Library’s online delay label: check the specific resource and date you are using.

Calculate market capitalization correctly

Use this formula:

Market capitalization = market price per share × outstanding shares

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Nigeria gives an illustrative example: 1,000,000 ordinary shares multiplied by ₦20.00 equals ₦20,000,000.00. If the price in that example falls to ₦15.00 and the share count remains unchanged, the calculated market capitalization becomes ₦15,000,000. The SEC’s example explains the arithmetic; it is not a current quote for a listed stock.

Apply the formula to a published NGX price only after confirming what that price represents. A closing or end-of-day price and an intraday or delayed price describe different moments. Pair the price with a share-count record that covers the same point or clearly identify the calculation as an estimate when the dates do not line up.

Use outstanding shares, not authorized shares

Outstanding shares are issued and fully paid shares, according to the SEC. Authorized shares are the number registered as the company’s permitted share ceiling; they are not the share count to substitute into this market-cap calculation. Using the authorized total can produce a figure that does not represent the capitalization based on shares actually outstanding.

Do not infer outstanding shares from the authorized ceiling, a historical prospectus, or a rounded figure in a commentary article when an NGX or company record supplies a more specific count. If the record does not identify the share-count definition, flag that limitation instead of silently treating it as outstanding shares.

Keep the price and share count aligned

Use a price and outstanding-share figure that refer to the same listed security and date. If one figure is from one date and the other from another, the product may not describe the capitalization at either date. Label such a calculation as a mixed-date estimate rather than presenting it as a matched market figure.

The share count can change as well as the price. The SEC notes that further share issuance or debt converting into equity can alter outstanding shares. For total exchange capitalization, listings and delistings also affect the aggregate. For an individual company, a changing share count means a past capitalization cannot reliably be updated by changing only the share price.

This distinction helps explain why two apparently reasonable calculations can differ. One may use a current price and a newly updated share count, while another uses an older Daily Official List. Neither arithmetic operation is necessarily wrong; the inputs describe different dates or corporate-capital structures. Write down the date attached to each input before comparing results.

Choose a data source for the timing and detail you need

The right source depends on whether you need a delayed display, an end-of-day record, historical prices, or a real-time feed. NGX describes several access routes and products, but product fields, timing, and access conditions should be checked for the particular resource.

Source or route What it can help you find Timing and access notes
NGX Data Library Listed resources include the Daily Official List (Equities), Market Capitalization, Shares Outstanding, and Daily Summary. The page labels its displayed data 30 minutes delayed. Check the date and fields in the individual resource.
Daily Official List (Equities) End-of-day information for quoted equities; SEC Nigeria says the equity section includes current market price and other company or security information. SEC Nigeria describes it as updated daily after trading. Do not confuse this end-of-day document with a live feed.
NGX X-DataPortal historical equity data NGX describes Equity Level 1 Historical data with traded volume, number of trades, and OHLC/current-price fields. NGX describes free access to seven days of historical price data and other reports. Confirm current product details and conditions; the seven-day description is not a claim that every historical dataset is free.
NGX X-DataPortal real-time equity data NGX describes Equity Level 1 Real-Time data for authorized clients, including traded volume, traded value, transaction count, and price fields. Access is described for authorized clients. Check the current product conditions and whether its fields meet your needs.
NGX direct data sales or authorized vendors NGX says it provides real-time, end-of-day, reference, and historical data directly or through authorized vendors. NGX data distribution is subject to its Market Data Agreement. Verify current terms and vendor authorization rather than assuming a feed is official or free.

NGX also describes downloadable reports and other market-data products through its portal. The available descriptions do not establish current terms for every individual product or vendor, so confirm the specific fields, recency, access tier, and conditions before relying on one for a decision.

Compare sources before choosing one

Use five practical comparison questions:

  1. How recent is the information? A 30-minute-delayed display, an end-of-day document, a historical series, and a real-time feed are not substitutes for one another.
  2. What period does it cover? A single trading day cannot answer a question about a month or year unless you collect and aggregate the relevant daily records.
  3. Which fields are included? Confirm that the product supplies the price, outstanding shares, market capitalization, traded volume, or other field you actually need. A source showing price alone cannot verify a market-cap calculation.
  4. How is it accessed? An open download, a limited free report, an authorized-client product, and a paid data service have different practical requirements.
  5. Who distributes it? NGX itself and an authorized vendor have identifiable provenance. Do not describe an unverified third-party feed as an official NGX source.

For a one-off end-of-day check, the Daily Official List or the relevant Data Library download may be sufficient. For repeated historical comparisons, a portal product that exposes volume and price fields in a consistent format may save manual work. For intraday monitoring, investigate the real-time product and its authorization requirements rather than trying to turn delayed data into a live feed.

Read volume without confusing it with value or trades

When checking activity, select the field explicitly named traded volume and read it with its reporting period. A volume figure should answer: which security, how many shares, and over what period? If the data resource also gives traded value or transaction count, keep those as separate figures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Volume is shares traded. It is not the number of transactions.
  • Value is monetary activity. It is not a share count.
  • Transaction count is a count of deals or transactions. It does not tell you how many shares changed hands without the volume field.

For a daily comparison, use figures for the same security and comparable trading dates. For a historical comparison, use a source that states the period covered; a current or delayed snapshot does not by itself provide a time series.

Do not add transaction counts together and call the result volume, and do not substitute traded value when a question asks how many shares changed hands. If you present all three fields, label each one with its unit and period. This is especially important when a table contains similarly named columns or when a vendor uses abbreviated headings.

Use volume in context

A volume number is most useful when its comparison is explicit: for example, one security against its own earlier trading dates, or several securities on the same date. The figure alone does not establish market capitalization, price direction, or the reason for a change. Those questions require the corresponding price, share-count, or transaction fields and a clearly defined period.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling delayed data live

The NGX Data Library labels its display 30 minutes delayed. Describe it that way. If you need real-time information, check the applicable NGX real-time product and its access requirements rather than treating the library display as instantaneous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using authorized shares in the formula

Use outstanding shares—the issued and fully paid shares described by the SEC—not the authorized-share ceiling. If the source does not make clear which share-count field it provides, do not assume the two are equivalent.

Mixing dates or securities

A price for one date multiplied by a share count for another date may not represent market capitalization at either point. Likewise, do not combine a price or volume record for a different security simply because the company names look similar. Match the security and date before comparing or calculating.

Reporting volume when you mean value or deal count

NGX identifies traded volume, traded value, and number of transactions as distinct fields. Use the exact field name in your notes or report so a reader can tell whether the figure represents shares, currency, or transactions.

Expecting a calculator to supply market data

A calculator can multiply price by outstanding shares, but it cannot verify either input or retrieve trading volume. Use an exchange or other appropriately authorized data source for the market figures, then use arithmetic only for the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every data product is free or every vendor is authorized

NGX describes both direct data sales and vendor distribution, as well as different portal products and access levels. Check the particular product’s terms and the vendor’s authorization. Do not assume that a free report, a real-time feed, or an API is available on identical terms.

Rounding too early

Keep the displayed price and share count at the precision supplied by the source while calculating. If you round the price or the share count first, the result can differ from the published market-capitalization figure. Report any final rounding clearly, especially when comparing your calculation with an exchange value.

Leaving the measurement basis unstated

A bare number is hard to audit. State whether capitalization was copied from NGX or calculated, identify the price used, give the outstanding-share count, and include the date. For volume, include the number of shares and the exact trading period. This short audit trail lets another reader reproduce the result or explain a difference.

A repeatable checking routine

  1. Write the company or security name exactly as it appears in the NGX record.
  2. Choose the date or period before opening the data file, so you do not accidentally use the most convenient date.
  3. Capture the price, outstanding shares, and any published market-capitalization field from the same dated source where possible.
  4. Calculate price multiplied by outstanding shares as a cross-check, preserving the units.
  5. Capture traded volume separately from traded value and transaction count.
  6. Mark the timing as delayed, end-of-day, historical, or real-time according to the product description.
  7. Save the source name, download or access date, and any access limitation that affects interpretation.

If the published market capitalization and your multiplication disagree, stop and inspect the inputs. Possible explanations supported by the data structure include different dates, a changed outstanding-share count, a price field representing another point in the session, or a unit display such as naira versus a larger naira denomination. Do not force the numbers to agree by changing an input without documenting why.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula for a Nigerian company’s market capitalization?

Multiply the market price per share by the company’s outstanding shares for the same security and date. The SEC Nigeria illustration is 1,000,000 ordinary shares × ₦20.00 = ₦20,000,000.00.

Where can I find an NGX stock’s trading volume?

Start with the NGX Data Library and look for the relevant equity resource or Daily Summary. NGX also describes X-DataPortal historical and real-time equity products with traded-volume fields. Check the period and access conditions for the specific product.

Is NGX Data Library information live?

No. The NGX Data Library page labels its displayed information “30 MINUTES DELAYED DATA.” Use a product specifically described as real-time if you require live information, and check whether authorization is required.

Should I use authorized or outstanding shares?

Use outstanding shares—issued and fully paid shares. Authorized shares are the permitted ceiling and should not replace the outstanding-share count in the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between volume, traded value, and transactions?

Traded volume is the number of shares traded. Traded value is the monetary value of that activity. Number of transactions is the count of deals. NGX lists these as separate fields.

Can I calculate today’s market cap with yesterday’s share count?

You can multiply the figures, but unless you explain the dates it is not a matched market-capitalization measure. Use a same-date share count where possible, or label the result as a mixed-date estimate.

Is NGX historical or real-time data free?

NGX describes free access to seven days of historical price data and other reports, while other products are available through different access routes. Do not assume every historical, real-time, API, or vendor product is free; verify the current terms.

Can a stock calculator provide the price, shares, or volume?

No. A calculator performs the multiplication only. Obtain price, outstanding shares, and traded volume from NGX or an appropriately authorized data source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For an NGX-listed stock, market capitalization is market price × outstanding shares, while trading volume is the number of shares traded during a stated period. Use the exact security, match the date, and keep volume separate from traded value and transaction count. The NGX Data Library is a practical starting point, but its display is marked 30 minutes delayed. For end-of-day, historical, or real-time needs, select the NGX resource or authorized data route whose fields, timing, and access conditions fit the task.
