How to Check a New Abdominal Lump and When to See a Doctor

You can observe and describe a new lump in your abdomen, but you cannot reliably identify its cause at home. Note where it is, when you first noticed it, whether it changes, whether it hurts, and which other symptoms occur. Arrange a medical evaluation for any new abdominal lump rather than trying to diagnose it by touch.

Use emergency services for a pulsating abdominal lump with severe pain, or for a painful hernia-like bulge that suddenly worsens or is accompanied by dark discoloration, vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. The warning signs and a safe observation checklist are explained below.

What counts as a new abdominal lump?

An abdominal lump or mass is a new area of swelling, fullness, or a bump that you can see or feel on the abdomen. It may be in the abdominal wall, near the belly button, in the groin, under the ribs, or along a previous surgical scar. A mass can also lie deeper inside the abdomen and may not be visible on the skin. The way it looks or feels does not reliably show where it came from.

A hernia is one common explanation for a bulge, but it is not the only one. MedlinePlus lists a hematoma, lipoma, enlarged lymph nodes, and skin or muscle tumors among possible causes. Different conditions can feel soft, firm, tender, fixed, or mobile, so a home check cannot establish the diagnosis.

Start with safety: decide whether this is an emergency

Stop checking the lump yourself and seek urgent help if you have either of these patterns:

  • A pulsating lump plus severe abdominal pain. This combination needs immediate medical attention because it could indicate a ruptured aortic aneurysm.
  • A painful bulge that may be a hernia and is suddenly getting worse. Red, purple, dark or otherwise discolored skin over the bulge, nausea or vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas can signal a serious complication such as strangulation.

Use the local emergency number or emergency department in your country. Do not drive yourself if you are faint, severely unwell, or in extreme pain. Do not wait to see whether the lump settles, and do not forcefully push it back into your abdomen.

How to check a new abdominal lump safely

This is an observation and documentation exercise, not a home diagnostic test. A clinician may need to examine the area and order tests to determine what the lump is. Check only enough to record useful information; repeated manipulation cannot identify the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look at the skin and outline the location. Use a simple description such as “beside the belly button,” “in the groin,” “along an old surgical scar,” or “under the right ribs.” Note whether the lump is visible, its approximate size, and whether the skin looks normal, red, purple, bruised, or darker than the surrounding skin.
  2. Record when it appeared. Write down the date or best estimate. Note whether it appeared after an injury, surgery, heavy lifting, coughing illness, or another event. Do not assume that a lump linked to one of these events has a harmless cause.
  3. Observe its pattern over ordinary activities. Notice whether it is always present or comes and goes, and whether its appearance changes when you stand, sit, or lie down. A bulge that is more noticeable with normal coughing or sneezing and smaller while lying down can be a clue that fits a hernia, but it does not confirm one.
  4. Describe discomfort without repeatedly pressing. Record whether the area is painless, tender to light contact, or painful at rest or with movement. Avoid deep poking, forceful squeezing, repeated straining, or trying to push a painful lump back inside.
  5. Check for associated symptoms. Note nausea, vomiting, fever, bloating, a change in bowel movements, difficulty passing stool or gas, or feeling faint. These details can change how quickly you need care.
  6. Take a dated photograph only if useful. A private, well-lit image can help show a clinician how the lump looked on a particular day, especially if it comes and goes. Do not delay care to photograph it, and do not share an intimate image through an insecure channel.

Do not repeatedly cough, lift, strain, squeeze, or massage the area to make a lump appear. Normal movement that you happen to notice is enough. A painful, stuck, or discolored bulge should be assessed rather than manipulated.

Questions to answer while you observe

These questions turn a vague concern into information a clinician can use:

  • Exactly where is the lump, and is it on the skin, in the abdominal wall, or felt only with deeper pressure?
  • When did you first notice it, and was the onset sudden or gradual?
  • Is it always present, or does it disappear and return?
  • Has it become larger, smaller, harder, more tender, or a different color?
  • Does it look different when you stand, sit, lie down, cough, sneeze, or move normally?
  • Do you have pain at rest, pain with movement, tenderness, warmth, redness, bruising, or a pulsing sensation?
  • Have nausea, vomiting, fever, bloating, bowel changes, or difficulty passing stool or gas occurred?
  • Was there a recent injury, operation, prolonged cough, unusual exertion, or another event before it appeared?

Write the answers down rather than relying on memory. MedlinePlus says a provider may ask where and when the lump appeared, whether it comes and goes or changes, and what other symptoms are present.

What an abdominal lump could be

A lump in the abdominal wall has several possible causes. MedlinePlus lists hernias, a hematoma (a collection of blood after bleeding or injury), a lipoma (a fatty lump), enlarged lymph nodes, and skin or muscle tumors among the possibilities. A mass felt through the abdominal wall can also require assessment for causes deeper inside the abdomen. Appearance and texture alone cannot distinguish these conditions.

Descriptive clue Explanation that may fit Why it is not a diagnosis
Bulge near the groin, navel, or a previous surgical scar that changes with standing, coughing, or lying down A hernia can behave this way because tissue moves through a weak area in the abdominal wall. Other lumps can be in the same locations, and only an examination can establish whether a hernia is present or complicated.
Firm or soft lump after an injury or procedure, sometimes with bruising A hematoma is a possible collection of blood. The timing, medicines, examination, and sometimes imaging are needed to distinguish it from other masses.
Soft, often slow-growing lump under the skin A lipoma is one possibility. A person cannot reliably identify a lipoma by touch; a changing, painful, or hard lump needs assessment.
Lump in an area where lymph nodes are found Enlarged lymph nodes can occur with infection or other conditions. Location and associated symptoms must be interpreted by a clinician.
Lump arising from skin or muscle, or a mass that feels fixed Skin or muscle tumors are among the causes clinicians consider. “Tumor” does not by itself mean cancer, and home examination cannot determine the tissue type.
Fullness or mass that cannot be seen clearly on the surface A deeper abdominal mass may be present. Only a clinical examination and, when indicated, testing can identify its source.

Do not label a new lump “just a hernia” or “just a lipoma” based on how it feels. A change in size, color, pain, or behavior is information for a clinician, not proof of a particular condition.

Clues that can point toward a hernia

NHS guidance describes a common hernia pattern: a bulge is more noticeable when coughing, sneezing, or crying and becomes smaller when lying down. Hernias may occur in the groin, around the navel, or along a prior abdominal surgical scar. These observations can help you describe the problem at an appointment.

A bulge that reduces when you lie down is not automatically safe, and an intermittent bulge is still a suspected hernia. A hernia can become trapped or lose its blood supply. Do not deliberately perform repeated coughing, heavy lifting, or forceful straining to make a bulge appear. A suspected hernia should be assessed by a health professional, even if it is not very painful.

When to contact a doctor about a lump

Contact a health care provider about any new abdominal lump or mass. Arrange prompt evaluation if it is enlarging, changing color, or painful. A clinician may want to examine it even when you feel otherwise well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

General NHS guidance for lumps also advises medical review when a lump is painful, red or hot, hard and immobile, continues beyond two weeks, grows, or causes concern. The two-week wording is general lump advice, not a reason to postpone assessment of a new abdominal mass: abdominal lumps should be reported when noticed.

If the lump follows an injury or surgery, tell the treating service about it. If you take medicines that affect bleeding, mention them when you arrange care. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own while waiting for an appointment.

Emergency warning signs in more detail

Pulsating lump with severe pain

A lump that seems to pulse in time with your heartbeat is not something to monitor at home when it occurs with severe abdominal pain. MedlinePlus’s “Abdominal mass” guidance, reviewed October 9, 2024, advises immediate help for this combination because it could indicate a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Call emergency services rather than arranging a routine appointment.

Possible strangulated hernia

A hernia can become trapped and lose its blood supply. Mayo Clinic lists sudden worsening pain, nausea or vomiting, fever, and a bulge that turns red, purple, or dark among warning signs requiring urgent assessment. Inability to move your bowels or pass gas is another emergency warning sign. These symptoms can occur with a known hernia or with a new bulge that has not yet been diagnosed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not forcefully reduce a painful bulge or wait for it to become completely hard. Tell emergency clinicians when the pain or color change began, whether vomiting or fever is present, and when you last passed stool or gas. Follow instructions from the emergency service while arranging transport.

What to write down before an appointment

A short record helps the clinician focus the history and compare changes. Include:

  • The date you first noticed the lump and whether its onset was sudden or gradual.
  • Its location, using a body landmark such as the navel, groin, ribs, or a surgical scar.
  • Whether it is always present or comes and goes.
  • Whether it changes with standing, lying down, ordinary coughing, sneezing, or movement.
  • Approximate size and any increase or decrease you have observed.
  • Pain, tenderness, warmth, redness, bruising, purple or dark discoloration, or a pulsating sensation.
  • Nausea, vomiting, fever, bloating, altered bowel movements, or difficulty passing stool or gas.
  • Recent injury, operation, persistent cough, or unusual exertion, if relevant.
  • Medicines and medical conditions that may affect bleeding, healing, or abdominal organs.

Bring the note and, if appropriate, a dated photograph. A photograph is supplementary; it does not replace an examination, and you should not delay urgent care to collect one.

What a clinician may do

The appointment usually starts with a history and an examination. The clinician may ask you to stand, lie down, cough, or gently strain while they observe and feel the area. This is different from repeatedly testing the lump yourself: the clinician is assessing its position, movement, tenderness, and relation to the abdominal wall while also checking for other signs.

Depending on the findings, the clinician may decide that observation is sufficient, arrange imaging, or order other tests. The appropriate test depends on the lump’s location, depth, symptoms, examination findings, and your medical history. A normal-looking skin surface does not rule out a deeper problem, and a visible bulge does not establish its cause without examination.

How to describe the pattern without trying to diagnose it

When explaining the lump, separate what you observed from what you think it means. For example:

  • Useful: “There is a two-centimeter-looking bulge just above my navel. I first noticed it four days ago. It is less visible when I lie down and sore after coughing.”
  • Less useful: “I have a harmless hernia.”

Use words such as “seems,” “appears,” and “I noticed” for observations. Avoid assigning a diagnosis based on a home check. If you are unsure whether the lump pulses, hurts, or changes color, tell the clinician that you are unsure rather than repeatedly pressing the area to decide.

Common mistakes to avoid

Waiting for a lump to become severe

Some serious problems begin with a small or intermittent bulge. A new abdominal lump warrants contact with a provider even when pain is mild or absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trying to force it back in

A painful or stuck bulge should not be pushed forcefully. Manipulation can worsen pain and may delay urgent assessment.

Using online pictures or touch as confirmation

Different conditions can look or feel similar. A picture, a soft texture, or a change when lying down can be a clue for the history, but none is a reliable home diagnosis.

Ignoring color and bowel changes

Red, purple, or dark skin, vomiting, fever, and inability to pass stool or gas are clinically important changes. Report them immediately rather than waiting for a routine visit.

Assuming a previous diagnosis explains every new bulge

Even if you have had a hernia or lipoma before, a new lump can have a different cause. Describe the new location and pattern instead of reusing an old label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right care pathway

Situation Action
Any new abdominal lump, even without severe symptoms Contact a health care provider and arrange an evaluation.
Lump that is growing, painful, or changing color Request prompt medical advice rather than waiting for it to resolve.
Suspected hernia that is intermittent or changes with posture Arrange a clinician assessment; use the pattern as a description, not a diagnosis.
Pulsating lump with severe abdominal pain Seek emergency help immediately.
Painful bulge with sudden worsening pain, dark discoloration, vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas Seek urgent or emergency assessment immediately.

Care-system labels differ by country. In the United States, this may mean contacting a primary-care office, urgent-care service, or emergency department. In the United Kingdom, NHS advice uses a GP for suspected hernias and general lump concerns, with emergency services for severe warning signs. Use the equivalent local service where you live.

Frequently overlooked details

A lump’s location can be more informative than a generic description such as “stomach lump.” Saying that it is beside the navel, in the groin, under the ribs, or along a scar helps the clinician decide what to examine. Whether it comes and goes is also important: an intermittent bulge still deserves assessment.

Color and function matter as much as size. A bulge that becomes red, purple, or dark, or is accompanied by vomiting or inability to pass stool or gas, should not be watched at home. Conversely, the absence of pain does not prove that a lump is harmless. Report a painless lump that persists, grows, feels hard and immobile, or concerns you.

Key point

Observe a new abdominal lump only to document its location, timing, changes, pain, and associated symptoms. Arrange medical evaluation for the lump itself, and switch to emergency care for a pulsating lump with severe pain or a painful hernia-like bulge with sudden worsening, discoloration, vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. A professional examination—not pressing, coughing repeatedly, or comparing photographs—is what determines the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I diagnose a hernia by making the lump bulge when I cough?

No. A bulge that is more noticeable with ordinary coughing or sneezing and smaller when lying down can fit a hernia pattern, but it is only a clue. Do not repeatedly cough, strain, lift, or push on the area. Arrange a clinician assessment.

Should I see a doctor if the lump does not hurt?

Yes. Contact a health care provider about any new abdominal lump, even without severe symptoms. Promptly report one that grows, changes color, feels hard or immobile, persists, or causes concern.

What does a pulsating abdominal lump mean?

A pulsating lump with severe abdominal pain is an emergency warning sign. Seek immediate emergency help because this combination could indicate a ruptured aortic aneurysm.

When is a hernia-like lump an emergency?

Seek urgent assessment for sudden worsening pain, red, purple, or dark discoloration, nausea or vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. These signs can indicate a trapped hernia with impaired blood supply.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I tell the clinician?

Tell them when and where the lump appeared, whether it comes and goes or changes with posture or ordinary coughing, its approximate size, pain or tenderness, skin changes, and any nausea, vomiting, fever, bloating, bowel changes, or difficulty passing stool or gas.

Can a soft lump be safely assumed to be a lipoma?

No. A lipoma is one possibility, but touch and appearance cannot reliably identify it. A new, changing, painful, hard, or fixed lump needs professional evaluation.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: A new abdominal lump should be assessed by a health professional. Observe it only long enough to record its location, timing, size changes, color, pain, posture-related pattern, and associated symptoms. Get emergency help for a pulsating lump with severe pain or a painful bulge with sudden worsening, dark discoloration, vomiting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas.
