To see whether a particular scheme owns the shares, use that scheme’s periodic portfolio disclosure on AMFI or its asset-management company’s website. To see how the listed company reports mutual funds among its owners, use the company’s shareholding-pattern filing on the NSE or BSE.
These sources answer different questions. A scheme portfolio is fund-level data for a stated reporting period; an exchange filing is issuer-level ownership data for an “as on” date. Record the relevant date and scope beside every figure, and do not describe either periodic disclosure as a live position.

Decide which ownership question you are asking
Start by choosing the data set that matches your question. Confusing the two routes is the most common reason a correct number is given the wrong meaning.

| Whether one named mutual-fund scheme holds a company’s shares | The scheme’s portfolio disclosure from AMFI or the AMC | The holdings reported by that individual scheme for a particular portfolio date |
| How much of the company is reported under mutual funds or other shareholder categories | The company’s shareholding-pattern filing on NSE or BSE | The issuer’s category-level ownership disclosure for a stated “as on” date |
| Which scheme has the largest reported position | Portfolio files for each scheme you intend to compare | A comparison based on the same period and the same metric shown in those files |
An issuer filing may show a mutual-fund category without naming every scheme. Conversely, a scheme portfolio can identify that scheme’s position without showing the company’s complete ownership breakdown. Neither source should be treated as a substitute for the other.

Gather the identifiers before searching
Have these details ready:
- Company name: Use the legal or exchange-listed name, not only a popular abbreviation.
- Exchange symbol: The symbol helps locate the issuer’s filing on the relevant exchange.
- ISIN, if available: The International Securities Identification Number helps distinguish securities with similar names and is included in portfolio disclosure material described by SEBI.
- Scheme name and plan: If you are checking a particular fund, note the exact scheme rather than only the fund-house name.
- Reporting period: Decide whether you need the latest available month-end or half-year-end file, or a historical period for comparison.
If you do not know the ISIN, begin with the company name and then verify the security identity in the file. Do not assume that a similar name refers to the same listed security.
Route 1: Check a particular scheme’s portfolio
Use AMFI’s portfolio-disclosure facility
- Open AMFI’s mutual-fund portfolio disclosure facility at www.amfiindia.com.
- Select the relevant mutual-fund scheme and the reporting period offered by the facility.
- Open or download the portfolio file.
- Search the spreadsheet for the company name. If the name is ambiguous, search for the ISIN and confirm the security description.
- Read the holding information in the row for that security. Preserve the units, value, percentage or other columns exactly as labelled; do not create a percentage if the file does not provide one.
- Write the portfolio date beside the result. A file for a month-end or half-year-end is a historical disclosure for that date, not an intraday position.
- Save the file or its identifying details so another reader can reproduce the check.
The AMFI route is useful when you know the scheme and want its reported position. It is not designed to prove that every mutual-fund scheme owns, or does not own, the company.
Use the asset-management company’s own disclosure page
An AMC may provide the same scheme portfolio through its disclosure page, sometimes with a different navigation layout. Select the scheme and applicable period, download the portfolio, and search for the company or ISIN. The AMC file is the appropriate source when your question concerns that AMC’s scheme and the relevant file is available there.

- the exact security name and ISIN, when supplied;
- the scheme name and plan or option shown in the file;
- the portfolio date;
- the units, value, percentage or other reported measure and its column heading;
- whether the file contains a revised version or an explanatory note.
Keep the source file with your notes. If you quote a number later, write it with its date and measure—for example, “reported holding in the scheme portfolio as on [date], measured by [column label].” Do not silently convert a quantity of shares into a percentage of the company or a percentage of the scheme.
Route 2: Check the listed company’s shareholding pattern
Find the filing on NSE
- Identify the company’s NSE symbol.
- Open the NSE shareholding-pattern filing interface and search by company or symbol.
- Select the filing period you need.
- Inspect the filing’s as on date before reading the ownership categories.
- Note the submission date and any revision date shown by the interface.
- Use the available CSV download when you need to sort or archive the data. The interface also provides an XBRL file link where available.
- Read the mutual-fund or other relevant category exactly as reported by the issuer. Do not treat that category as a list of individual schemes unless the filing supplies those names and amounts.
The NSE filing answers how the company reports its ownership categories on a particular date. Its submission and revision dates describe the filing history; they are not substitutes for the “as on” ownership date.
Use the corresponding BSE route
BSE provides a corresponding shareholding-pattern filing route. Search for the listed company, choose the relevant period, and check the filing’s “as on” date and any submission or revision information. Download the available filing if you need a local record.
If the NSE and BSE interfaces display different dates or versions, compare the filing period, revision information and issuer details before deciding that the ownership figures conflict. A later revision may supersede an earlier submission, while two filings may simply refer to different reporting dates.
Understand what an issuer filing can and cannot tell you
The company-level filing can show ownership by categories defined in the filing, such as mutual funds, but it does not automatically identify each scheme. A mutual-fund total in that filing may therefore be larger or smaller than the position of any one scheme in an AMFI or AMC portfolio. The scopes are different:

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Issuer filing: company-wide ownership categories for one “as on” date.
- Scheme portfolio: one scheme’s reported securities for one portfolio date.
Use the issuer filing for a company-level ownership question and the scheme file for a fund-level question. Do not infer an individual fund’s holding solely from a mutual-fund category in the issuer filing.

| Comparison point | Scheme portfolio | Issuer shareholding pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One mutual-fund scheme | The listed company and its reported ownership categories |
| Date to record | Portfolio date, usually a month-end or half-year-end date shown in the file | The filing’s “as on” date |
| Publication or filing timing | Periodic disclosure; the SEBI-hosted 2025 material describes publication within 10 days after the close of each month or half-year, as applicable | Submission date and revision date may be shown separately from the “as on” date |
| Security identity | Company or security name and, where supplied, ISIN | Company, symbol and filing details |
| Download formats noted in the official material | Downloadable spreadsheet | CSV download and an XBRL file link on the NSE interface |
| Can it identify every individual scheme? | Only the scheme represented by that file | Not unless the filing provides scheme-level detail |
Do not compare a scheme’s portfolio percentage with the company’s mutual-fund category total as though both measured the same population. Before comparing any two figures, align the scope, reporting date, security identity and measurement column.
How to find which mutual fund has the highest holding
“Highest holding” can mean several different things. Define the metric before opening files:
| Possible meaning | How to handle it |
|---|---|
| Largest percentage of a scheme’s portfolio invested in the company | Compare the percentage column for the same reporting period across the schemes you selected. |
| Largest number of shares held | Compare the units or shares column, if the files provide it, using the same date. |
| Largest reported market value | Compare the value column as labelled in each file and keep the currency and date with the result. |
| Largest aggregate ownership across all schemes in a fund house or market | Do not infer it from one scheme or an issuer-level category. You would need a complete, consistently dated set of scheme files and a clearly defined aggregation method. |
For a defensible comparison, use this process:
- List the schemes to be compared and choose one portfolio period.
- Open each scheme’s AMFI or AMC portfolio file.
- Locate the company by name and confirm the ISIN where available.
- Copy the same reported metric from each file. If one file lacks that metric, label the comparison incomplete rather than substituting a different measure.
- Record the date, scheme, plan or option, security identity and metric in a worksheet.
- Sort only after the entries are aligned. State whether “highest” means percentage, shares or value.
This approach answers which of the schemes you checked had the largest reported position on the selected date. It does not establish a real-time ranking, and it does not prove that an unexamined scheme held nothing.
Publication timing, dates and revisions
Portfolio disclosures are periodic. SEBI-hosted disclosure material from 2025 states: “In terms of SEBI Regulation, Mutual Funds/ AMCs will disclose portfolio (along with ISIN) as on the last day of the month/half-year for all Schemes on its website and on the website of AMFI (www.amfiindia.com) within 10 days from the close of each month/half-year respectively in a user-friendly and downloadable spreadsheet format.”

The 10-day statement describes the required publication window; it is not a guarantee that every website will always upload on schedule. The newest file available may still describe an earlier month-end or half-year-end. Always show both the date of the position and, where available, the upload, submission or revision date.
For exchange filings, distinguish three dates when the interface provides them:
- “As on” date: the date to which the ownership information relates.
- Submission date: when the issuer submitted the filing.
- Revision date: when a revised filing was submitted, if applicable.
A later submission or revision does not automatically mean the underlying ownership date changed. Read the filing labels before comparing it with a portfolio file.

Suppose your question is whether a named scheme held a listed company at the latest month-end. Your record should identify the source and date rather than simply saying “the fund owns the stock.” A concise entry could look like this:
Company: [exact listed company name]
Symbol: [exchange symbol]
ISIN: [ISIN, if shown]
Scheme: [exact scheme and plan]
Source: AMFI or AMC portfolio disclosure
Portfolio date: [date shown in the file]
Reported measure: [column heading and value]
File/revision note: [revision or upload detail, if shown]
If you also consult the issuer filing, keep it as a separate entry:
Best Value
Issuer source: NSE or BSE shareholding-pattern filing
As-on date: [date shown by the filing]
Category: [category label exactly as reported]
Submission date: [date, if shown]
Revision date: [date, if shown]
Keeping the entries separate prevents a company-level category total from being mistaken for the scheme’s own position.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The company does not appear in the search
- Try the exact listed name rather than a shortened name.
- Search by ISIN when the file provides it.
- Check that you selected the correct scheme and reporting period.
- Confirm that you opened a portfolio file rather than a different disclosure document.
Several securities have similar names
Use the ISIN and the full security description to disambiguate them. If the file does not provide enough identity information, do not assign the row to the company solely because the names look alike.
The number looks different from an exchange filing
First compare scope and dates. One value may be for a single scheme while the other is the company’s total reported mutual-fund category. Next compare the portfolio date with the filing’s “as on” date and check whether either source shows a revision. A difference is not evidence that one source is wrong.
You need a live holding
These disclosures are periodic. The latest published portfolio or filing is the latest disclosed position for its stated date, not a live trading screen. Use the date in your wording and avoid claiming that the scheme still held the position after that date.
The filing has multiple versions
Record the submission and revision dates and use the latest applicable version for the same “as on” period. Keep the earlier version in your notes if you need to explain a historical discrepancy.
You want to name every mutual-fund scheme from the company filing
An issuer-level mutual-fund category may not provide scheme-level names. Return to AMFI or AMC portfolio disclosures and examine the individual schemes instead of expanding the category into an unsupported list.
A practical checklist
- Write the company name and exchange symbol.
- Obtain the ISIN if it is available.
- Choose between a scheme portfolio question and an issuer shareholding-pattern question.
- Select a reporting period and record it before reading the number.
- For a scheme, use AMFI or the AMC and verify the scheme, plan, security and portfolio date.
- For the company, use NSE or BSE and record the “as on,” submission and revision dates shown.
- Preserve the file or download used, including CSV, spreadsheet or XBRL where available.
- State the measurement column and do not convert units, value or percentage without explaining the calculation.
- When comparing schemes, use the same period, security and metric.
- State clearly whether the result covers one scheme or the issuer’s company-wide ownership category.
Following those checks gives you a reproducible answer to the question you actually asked: a scheme-level holding from a portfolio disclosure, or a company-level ownership category from an exchange filing.
