What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before paying for a used MacBook, inspect it in person and record four things from macOS itself: the exact model, chip or processor, total memory, internal storage capacity, and battery condition with cycle count. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > About first, then verify storage and battery details in their dedicated screens. Seller screenshots are useful clues, but the Mac’s own menus are the primary check.
The steps below separate configured capacity from free space, explain what battery labels and cycle counts do—and do not—prove, and give you a repeatable pass-or-walk-away process.

What to inspect before handing over money
A listing title such as “MacBook Pro 16-inch” is not a complete configuration. Similar descriptions can cover different generations, chips, memory capacities and storage options. Your inspection should produce a written record that you can compare with the seller’s description and with Apple’s model information.

1. Identify the exact MacBook
Open About
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Open General > About. On some macOS releases, the page is labeled About This Mac.
- Record the model name, chip or processor, total memory, serial number and any coverage information displayed.
Apple’s About settings guide documents this screen and links to Storage settings and System Report. On an Apple silicon Mac, the field is labeled Chip; on an Intel Mac it is labeled Processor. Write down the wording exactly, including the generation and any Pro, Max or Ultra designation.
Match the model, not just the marketing name
Use the recorded model and serial details to check Apple’s model-specific information. Apple’s MacBook Pro and MacBook Air resource pages (MacBook Pro resources and MacBook Air resources) are useful starting points for identifying the correct generation and support documentation.
Do not infer the generation from screen size, keyboard style or the seller’s title. Two machines with the same screen size can have different processors, memory ceilings, ports and battery designs. If the model shown in About does not match the listing, pause the transaction until the discrepancy is explained and documented.

Record the serial number
Keep the serial number with your inspection notes. It is the identifier you can use when checking Apple support or coverage information. A serial number alone does not prove ownership history, repair history or that every internal part is original, so treat it as an identity check rather than a complete history report.
2. Check RAM and storage separately
Read total memory in About
The About page reports total memory. Record that value as the Mac’s installed RAM, not as the amount currently free. macOS may show memory pressure and used memory elsewhere, but those changing figures are not the configuration you are buying.
Memory is normally integrated into the logic board on modern MacBooks, so a lower value than advertised is a configuration mismatch, not a setting you can fix after purchase. If the seller claims a higher memory tier, ask them to show the value in About while you are present.
Open Storage settings
- From Apple menu > System Settings > General > About, choose the button or link that opens Storage.
- Read the internal storage capacity or configuration shown for the Mac.
- Also note the currently available space, but keep it as a separate number in your notes.
Apple’s About documentation directs you to Storage settings for this information. If the summary view does not make the configured capacity clear, continue to System Report and inspect the storage detail before you decide.

Capacity is not free space
A nearly empty 512 GB drive is still a 512 GB Mac; a 1 TB drive that is almost full is still a 1 TB Mac. Available space changes with the seller’s files, macOS updates and installed applications. Internal capacity is the specification that affects what the machine can hold over time. Free space is a condition of the current installation and may be recoverable after the seller erases the Mac.
| Value to record | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Configured memory | About | The installed RAM tier reported by macOS |
| Internal storage capacity | Storage settings; verify in System Report if unclear | The drive size included in the Mac |
| Available storage | Storage settings | Space currently free for files and applications |
Use System Report for detail
From About, open System Report. Apple describes this as a detailed listing of hardware and memory information. Use it when the About summary is abbreviated, when storage capacity is ambiguous, or when you want a second built-in reading before paying.
System Report is a verification aid, not a promise that the machine has never been repaired. It tells you what macOS currently reports; it does not establish the entire ownership or component history of a private sale.
3. Check Battery Health
Read the status label
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Open Battery.
- Read Battery Health and record the exact status.
Apple’s battery condition guide defines the two labels you are most likely to encounter:
- Normal: Apple’s wording is, “The battery is functioning normally.” This indicates normal operation at the time of inspection; it is not a guaranteed runtime figure.
- Service Recommended: Apple says, “The battery is performing normally, but its ability to hold a charge is less than when it was new. You may want to consider replacing the battery.” Treat this as a reduced-capacity warning and include a possible service assessment in your budget.
Battery Health does not tell you exactly how many hours the Mac will run. Runtime varies with workload, brightness, connected devices, software and power settings. Use the status as a condition signal, not as a substitute for a promised runtime.
Ask what the status means for the deal
A Normal label supports proceeding to the cycle-count check, but it does not erase other red flags. Service Recommended is not automatically proof that the Mac is unusable; it means the battery holds less charge than when new and replacement may be worth considering. If the seller priced the Mac as though it had a fresh battery, negotiate or walk away unless the reduced capacity is acceptable to you.
4. Check the battery cycle count
Find the count
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Hardware > Power.
- Under Battery Information, record the cycle count.
Apple explains this procedure in its battery cycle-count guide. Identify the exact model before judging the number because maximum cycle counts differ by MacBook model. Compare the recorded count with Apple’s model-specific limit rather than applying one universal threshold to every MacBook.

Understand what a cycle represents
A cycle reflects cumulative battery use, not simply the number of times the charger was plugged in. Several partial discharges can add up to one cycle. Therefore, a Mac that was frequently used on battery can accumulate cycles differently from one that was usually connected to power.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Apple states: “Your battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count.” This is a design statement for the battery at its maximum cycle count, not a guarantee that the individual used Mac currently retains 80% capacity or will deliver a particular runtime.
Combine cycle count with Battery Health
Battery Health and cycle count answer different questions. The status describes macOS’s current condition assessment; the count shows cumulative use relative to the model’s design limit. Read them together:
- Normal plus a relatively low count: generally a better battery position than a high-count example of the same model, although runtime is still not promised.
- Normal plus a count near the model limit: ask whether the price leaves room for eventual replacement.
- Service Recommended at any count: treat reduced charge-holding ability as an immediate ownership cost, even if the count is not at the published maximum.
Do not use a low cycle count to dismiss Service Recommended, and do not use a Normal label to claim the battery is nearly new.
5. Run the second built-in checks when time allows
Review System Report
System Report gives you a more detailed hardware and memory listing than the About summary. Review it when the seller’s description is vague, when a capacity is missing from the main screen, or when you are comparing two closely related configurations. Save or photograph your own notes only with the seller’s permission; the important point is that you personally saw the values on the Mac being sold.

Apple Diagnostics can help identify a potential source of a hardware issue and suggest first steps. It is useful when the machine shows symptoms such as unexpected warnings or hardware behavior that makes you uneasy. It is not a certificate that a used MacBook is defect-free, and a clean result does not replace checking the configuration, battery data, physical condition and transaction terms.
6. Compare two MacBooks on the same evidence
When you have more than one candidate, inspect both machines using the same sequence. Do not compare one seller’s screenshot with another seller’s live menu. Build a side-by-side record with these fields:

|---|---|
| Exact model and generation | Confirm in About and match Apple’s model information |
| Chip or processor | Copy the Chip field for Apple silicon or Processor field for Intel |
| Total memory | Use the value shown in About |
| Internal storage capacity | Read Storage settings and verify in System Report if necessary |
| Available space | Record separately; it reflects the current installation, not drive capacity |
| Battery Health | Prefer a clear Normal status; price Service Recommended as a potential replacement |
| Cycle count | Compare with the maximum for that exact model |
There is no single RAM, storage or battery number that suits every buyer. Weigh the readings against your workload and budget. A configuration that is comfortable for documents and browser tabs may be limiting for large creative projects, virtual machines or extensive local media libraries. Conversely, paying for a higher tier you will not use can leave less budget for a newer model or a battery with better condition.
7. Match the configuration to your intended use
Start with the workload, not the label
Write down the applications and files you expect to keep on the Mac. Then ask which constraint is most likely to affect you:
- Multitasking: If you keep many demanding applications or browser sessions open, total memory matters more than the amount of free memory shown at one moment.
- Large local libraries: If photos, video, development environments or offline media must stay on the Mac, internal capacity matters. Available space can be cleared; configured capacity cannot be expanded by deleting the seller’s files.
- Processing-heavy work: Compare the exact chip or processor and generation, not merely “Air” or “Pro” in a listing. Use Apple’s model documentation to distinguish generations.
- Mobile use: Give Battery Health and cycle count greater weight if you expect to work away from an outlet. A Service Recommended battery may require replacement sooner.
These are decision priorities, not universal minimum specifications. Apple’s documentation explains where to find each reading; it does not prescribe one configuration for every person.
Make the trade-off explicit
For each candidate, mark the first compromise you would accept: less internal capacity with external storage later, an older processor with more memory, or a battery that may need service. An external drive can add file capacity, but it does not increase the MacBook’s internal storage. If your work depends on fast local access or portability, that distinction may change which compromise is acceptable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. A practical in-person buying sequence
Use this order so a seller cannot steer you toward the easiest-to-show number while you miss a mismatch.
- Ask for a normal macOS login. You need access to System Settings, About, Battery and System Information. Do not treat a photograph or a boot screen as verification.
- Open About. Record model, chip or processor, total memory, serial number and coverage details.
- Check the model externally. Compare the recorded model with Apple’s relevant MacBook resources and the seller’s written description.
- Open Storage. Record internal capacity and available space as separate values.
- Open System Report. Confirm hardware, memory and any storage detail that was unclear in the summary.
- Open Battery. Record Battery Health exactly as shown.
- Open Hardware > Power. Record the cycle count and compare it with the limit for that model.
- Run Apple Diagnostics if a hardware concern remains. Use its result as a clue, not a guarantee.
- Reconcile the record with the deal. If any value differs from the listing, require an explanation before payment. If the battery is Service Recommended, account for a possible replacement rather than assuming the seller’s price already does so.
- Only then complete the transaction. Keep your notes, serial number and agreed configuration with the receipt or message history.
9. Red flags and what to do
The model does not match the listing
Stop and verify the exact model before discussing price. A similar-looking MacBook can have a different chip, memory tier, storage option or battery limit. If the seller cannot explain the difference, treat it as a failed inspection.
RAM is lower than advertised
Show the About screen and ask for the listing to be corrected. Because the installed memory is part of the configuration, do not assume it can be upgraded later.

Storage capacity is unclear
Open Storage settings and System Report. Do not accept available space as a substitute for configured capacity. If the capacity still cannot be established from macOS, postpone payment.
Battery says Service Recommended
Use Apple’s definition: the battery holds less charge than when new and replacement may be considered. Ask whether the price reflects that future cost. If you need dependable unplugged use and the seller will not adjust the deal, choose another machine.
Cycle count is high for the model
Look up the model-specific maximum in Apple’s cycle-count documentation and evaluate the count with Battery Health. A high count is a reason to budget for wear, not a standalone proof that the Mac is defective.
The seller will not allow the checks
Do not pay based only on screenshots or verbal assurances. Apple’s menus are quick to inspect, and refusal removes your ability to verify the exact configuration and battery condition. Walk away unless you can use a protected transaction with a meaningful inspection or return option.
10. Limits of what macOS can prove
The built-in screens tell you what the Mac currently reports. They do not establish an unbroken ownership history, prove that readings have never been altered, or guarantee that every component is original. For a cautious purchase, inspect the physical machine in person, compare the serial details with Apple’s support and coverage resources, and retain written evidence of the configuration promised by the seller.
Battery status and cycle count also cannot produce an exact remaining-runtime estimate. They are complementary indicators: one is a current condition label and the other is cumulative usage compared with a model-specific design limit. Your workload and power settings determine actual runtime.
