Then compare the count with Apple’s limit for that exact model. No single cycle count or battery-health percentage is a universal pass/fail rule; assess the readings together and consider the runtime you need and any possible service cost.
Check the cycle count on the Mac
- Ask the seller to open the Mac and show the results on screen.
- Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, and choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware > Power.
- Under Battery Information, find Cycle Count. Apple says the current count appears in this section (Apple Support: Determine battery cycle count for Mac laptops, published March 24, 2026).
A cycle is cumulative use equal to the battery’s full capacity; it does not mean that the Mac was necessarily drained and recharged in one session. For example, using half the battery one day and half the next can add up to one cycle.

Check Battery Health in macOS
On a macOS version that supports the setting, open System Settings > Battery and click the information button next to Battery Health.

- Service Recommended: The battery holds less charge than when it was new, or is not functioning normally. It is a reason to investigate expected runtime and service needs, not proof that the Mac cannot be used.
Apple documents these meanings in If you see battery “Service Recommended” on your Mac laptop (published May 14, 2026). On an older Mac or macOS version without Battery Health in settings, the Option-click battery status menu may instead show Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery.

Compare the count with the exact model’s limit
Identify the MacBook’s exact model before interpreting its cycle count. Apple’s cycle-count table has different maximums for different models: its current guidance lists 1,000 cycles for many MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, and 500 or 300 cycles for some older models. These are examples, not universal limits. Check the specific machine in Apple’s model-by-model cycle-count table.
Apple recommends battery replacement at the model’s maximum cycle count for best performance, while noting that the computer can still be used. Reaching the limit is therefore an important service and runtime consideration, not an automatic verdict that the laptop is unusable.

Interpret the readings together
- Count well below the model limit and status Normal: These are reassuring indicators, but they do not establish how long this particular Mac will run on a charge.
- Count close to or at the model limit: Treat reduced runtime or battery service as a possibility and factor it into your decision.
- Service Recommended or an older replacement alert: Ask about the Mac’s observed runtime and whether the seller has service documentation. Check service eligibility and cost for the model and your location before deciding.
- Comparing two Macs: Compare each exact model’s limit, cycle count relative to that limit, displayed health status, and likely service implications. A raw count is not directly comparable without the model limits.
Apple says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions. This is a design expectation, not a guarantee for an individual used Mac. Maximum capacity is relative to when the battery was new; a percentage alone does not predict a specific runtime.

Why cycle count and capacity do not tell the whole story
Batteries chemically age over time. Apple says temperature history and charging patterns also affect that aging, and Apple silicon battery health management can temporarily reduce maximum charge based on those factors. Maximum capacity may also be slightly below 100% before a Mac has been used, depending on the time between manufacture and first use. These qualifications mean a low cycle count is not, by itself, proof of strong real-world battery life. Apple cautions that third-party apps reporting battery-health conditions may not be accurate or conclusive indicators of system runtime, and advises relying on macOS battery-health information. If runtime matters to your purchase, ask the seller to demonstrate the Mac unplugged during your own inspection; the displayed status and count cannot substitute for observing how the machine performs in your intended use.
Account for possible battery service
Apple says battery service is available for a fee when coverage does not apply. For built-in batteries, service channels include Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and certain Independent Repair Providers using genuine Apple parts. Eligibility and cost depend on the model, location, and coverage. Verify the applicable service option and price before treating replacement as a known cost.
