How to Check a Local AI Translation of Financial Research for Errors

A fluent local AI translation can still reverse a financial conclusion, misstate a figure, or drop a qualification. Check it against the original in a fixed order: preserve the exact files and model details, map the document, audit high-risk numbers and terms, verify caveats and structure, then record corrections. For material that could affect an investment decision, risk assessment, publication, or regulated communication, have a bilingual reviewer with financial expertise resolve consequential ambiguities.

Why fluency is not enough

Translation quality is about fidelity to the source, not just natural-sounding prose. A mistranslated negative sign, reporting period, comparison base, or uncertainty word can change what a financial passage means while leaving the sentence polished.

Use the original text as the authority for what was stated. Back-translation may help spot awkward or missing content, but it cannot establish that the translated version preserves the source. This workflow checks translation fidelity; it is not investment advice, a financial-statement audit, or a substitute for the original research.

1. Freeze the source, translation, and model details

Before editing or reviewing, retain the exact source document and translated output. Record the source and target languages, local model name and version, date, prompt, and any glossary or terminology instructions used. If the translation is regenerated later, treat it as a new output and review it separately rather than silently replacing the version under review.

2. Map the document before checking sentences

Match the source and translation section by section. Include the parts that are easy to overlook when copying or converting a document:

  • Headings, paragraphs, captions, chart labels, and appendices.
  • Tables, including row and column headings, units, notes, and footnotes.
  • Disclaimers, definitions, and references that qualify a claim.

Mark anything omitted, duplicated, reordered, or attached to the wrong table row or column. A value can be translated correctly but still mislead if its heading or footnote has moved.

3. Audit names, numbers, currencies, and periods

Compare each high-risk token directly with the source, then check it again visually. A spreadsheet or side-by-side comparison can help find differences, but do not rely on automated matching alone: formatting changes can hide a sign or move a value into the wrong context.

  • Identity: company and instrument names, ticker symbols, and other entity names.
  • Number form: positive or negative sign, decimal position, digit grouping, magnitude, range, percentage, and ratio.
  • Units and currency: unit labels, currency symbols, and currency codes.
  • Time: dates, reporting periods, and whether a comparison is year over year or covers another interval.
  • Direction: wording such as “up,” “down,” “increase,” or “decrease,” including the base of comparison.

For example, check that a negative amount remains negative, that a percentage has not become a currency amount, and that a range has not been reduced to one endpoint. Preserve basis-point language as basis points; it is not interchangeable with a percentage-point change.

4. Keep currency translation separate from language translation

Translating prose does not authorize changing the financial amounts. The translation should preserve the source amount, its unit and currency, and any stated exchange-rate context. It should not silently recalculate or “normalize” a figure into another currency.

Pay attention to whether the source refers to reporting currency, functional currency, transaction currency, or a convenience translation. These are not interchangeable. Rules and disclosures can depend on jurisdiction and document type: the SEC Financial Reporting Manual, Topic 6, discusses U.S. filing context, including display of reporting currency and considerations for convenience translations. It is not a global rule; for a particular filing, check current requirements and the issuer’s disclosure.

5. Verify what each financial statement means

Check the sentence around every important figure, not just the number itself. Ask whether the source describes a level or a change, a historical result or a projection, and a reported or adjusted measure. Confirm that the translation preserves the source-specific meaning of terms such as revenue, earnings, operating cash flow, debt, margin, guidance, estimate, and forecast. Similar-sounding terms in another language are not automatically equivalent.

For alternative performance measures, confirm that the translated label, definition, and reconciliation stay connected. ESMA’s financial-reporting guidance covers European oversight of listed issuers’ IFRS reporting and alternative performance measures, including labels, reconciliations, and definitions. Its applicability depends on the issuer and document.

6. Check qualifications, comparisons, and attribution

A translation can retain a figure while changing the claim it supports. Compare the surrounding wording for:

  • Inclusions and exclusions, such as “including” versus “excluding.”
  • Limits such as “at least,” “up to,” or a range.
  • The comparison base, attribution, and any causal claim.
  • Uncertainty, risk qualifiers, estimates, and other caveats.
  • Whether a statement is historical, current, or projected.

Check that a caveat has not disappeared and that an estimate has not become a confirmed result. If the source’s wording is ambiguous, do not resolve that ambiguity by guessing in the translation.

7. Record errors so another reviewer can follow them

Keep an error log tied to the source passage. A useful record includes:

  • Source passage and corresponding translated passage.
  • Error category, such as number, terminology, omission, or qualification.
  • Severity and its practical effect on the meaning.
  • Correction and reviewer rationale.

ISO 5060:2024, published on February 13, 2024, gives general guidance for evaluating translation output. It describes an analytic human-evaluation approach organized around error types and penalty points, and addresses evaluator competence and sampling. It covers human translation, post-edited machine translation, and unedited machine translation; it is not a financial-specific checklist or evidence that a particular local model performs well. Unless you apply the standard’s full method and criteria, describe your log as an error record—not a formal ISO score.

If an organization repeats this work, use representative financial passages and a documented rubric, and keep the method consistent between reviews. NIST’s guidance on valid and reliable AI defines accuracy in relation to closeness to true or accepted values and calls for clearly defined, realistic test sets that represent expected conditions, with the measurement method documented. That is a design principle for a recurring check, not a performance result for any translation model.

8. Escalate ambiguity before relying on the translation

Pause use of the translation if you cannot confidently resolve a number, instrument, accounting term, or qualification against the source. Consult the original filing or research source, or ask a bilingual reviewer with financial-domain knowledge. This is especially important when the content could affect an investment, risk assessment, publication, or regulated communication. The appropriate review depends on the jurisdiction, document purpose, language pair, source quality, model version, and risk; this workflow does not establish legal compliance.

For current financial-sector AI governance context, the U.S. Treasury announced two AI resources on February 19, 2026, including a financial-services AI risk management framework tailored to operational, regulatory, and consumer-protection considerations. That framework is not evidence that a translation is accurate or a validation procedure for translation output: Treasury’s announcement.
