Confirm the exact license status, read the public discipline section, open any linked orders or docket documents, and note the date you searched. If a profile is incomplete or only covers a limited period, contact the state agency and consider a written name-verification request from the American Bar Association’s National Lawyer Regulatory Data Bank. A clean public search means that no accessible record appeared in that system; it does not prove that no complaint was ever made or that the lawyer is competent.
Why the state bar is the starting point
Lawyer licensing and discipline are handled by state or jurisdictional authorities, not by a single national regulator. The American Bar Association (ABA) tells consumers that each state maintains current registration and discipline information for lawyers licensed there and directs people to the directory of state disciplinary agencies for contact information.

The ABA itself is not a disciplinary agency. Its consumer guidance says it has no authority to investigate or act on complaints against lawyers; the relevant state agency performs that function. Use the ABA as a guide to the correct regulator and as a possible supplemental national check, but treat the licensing jurisdiction as the primary source for current eligibility and local records.
Step 1: Identify the lawyer precisely
Start with the lawyer’s full professional name as shown on a proposed engagement letter, website, business card, or court filing. Names can be shared by several attorneys, and a small spelling difference can produce the wrong profile or no result.

Collect additional identifiers before searching:
- City or office location
- State bar number or attorney number, if listed
- License number, where the jurisdiction uses one
- Middle name, middle initial, suffix, or former surname
- Law firm name and the states in which the firm says the lawyer practices
Do not assume that the state where the lawyer’s office is located is the only licensing jurisdiction. A lawyer can hold licenses in multiple states, and each state may maintain a separate profile and disciplinary record.
Step 2: Find the official attorney profile
Use the state bar’s official attorney-search page or the disciplinary agency identified by that state. Avoid relying on a commercial biography, a rating page, or a search-engine snippet for status. Those sources may be outdated, incomplete, or describing a different attorney.
Search using the full name and, when the directory permits it, add the city. Florida’s official instructions, for example, direct users to enter first name, last name, and city, then review the resulting profile. The exact fields vary by jurisdiction, so read the search page’s instructions rather than guessing at a format.
When several results appear, compare the city, attorney number, contact information, admission year, and firm details. Open the individual profile instead of treating the search-result list as the record.
Step 3: Record the current license status
Write down the profile’s exact status label and the date you checked it. Status wording matters. Depending on the jurisdiction, a profile may identify a lawyer as active or a member in good standing, suspended, disbarred, or otherwise not eligible to practice.
Florida’s directory, for example, displays labels such as “Member in Good Standing” and “Disbarred–Not eligible to practice.” Do not translate a jurisdiction’s label into a broader conclusion than the page supports. If the status is suspended, disbarred, inactive, or otherwise ineligible, stop and ask the licensing authority what the label means and whether any limited exception applies before considering the lawyer for work.
Capture the status date if the profile supplies one, and save or print the page for your records. A profile can change after you search it, so the date of your check is part of the information you need.

Step 4: Read the public discipline section
After confirming identity and status, look for a heading such as discipline history, public discipline, sanctions, judgments, orders, or disciplinary actions. Read the entries rather than stopping at a statement that a section exists.
For every listed action, record:
- The sanction or disposition
- The action or order date
- The case, reference, or docket number
- The issuing court or disciplinary body, if shown
- Links or instructions for obtaining the underlying order
Florida describes a “10-Year Discipline History” area that indicates whether details exist and, when they do, provides the sanction, action date, reference number, and linked court documents. The presence of a sanction does not by itself tell you the underlying facts; open the order or docket and read what the regulator actually decided.
Step 5: Open the underlying order or docket
A profile summary is a starting point, not the complete record. Follow each document link and compare the order’s name, bar number, dates, and case number with the profile. Read the allegations, findings, sanction, conditions, and effective dates separately. A disciplinary order may distinguish between allegations and facts established by the proceeding.
Save the document or note the official instructions for retrieving it. If the profile links to a docket rather than a final order, review the docket entries for the disposition. California’s State Bar Court provides online dockets and a process for requesting certified discipline documents, which can be important when you need an official copy for a business, court, or insurance decision.

Step 6: Check every other licensing jurisdiction
Repeat the search for each state in which the lawyer is licensed. Start with states the lawyer identifies, then check any additional jurisdictions suggested by admission information, court filings, or professional records. A result in one state does not substitute for a search in another.
Record the same information for each jurisdiction: profile identity, current status, search date, discipline entries, document links, and any look-back or confidentiality limits. If two profiles appear to describe the same person, compare attorney numbers and admission years rather than relying only on the name.
Step 7: Escalate incomplete or older records
Public online histories often have a defined time range. Florida says that public discipline documents are posted for the past 10 years and that older records require a public request. If a profile is silent about older conduct, do not treat that silence as proof that no earlier action exists. Ask the state agency how to request older records and whether fees, identity verification, or a written request are required.

California explains that its Attorney Search covers an attorney’s history from admission to the present, while also warning that confidential proceedings and sealed records are not available online. The apparent difference between a 10-year online display and a history from admission to present illustrates why you must read each jurisdiction’s record-access rules.
If the online profile is missing, contradictory, or clearly belongs to another person, contact the state disciplinary agency directly. Ask for written confirmation of the lawyer’s name and license status, and keep the response with your hiring records.
What different jurisdictions make public
Record systems do not use one national standard. The following examples show why a search must be interpreted within the jurisdiction’s own rules.

How to interpret a “no discipline” result
A profile that shows no public discipline means no accessible disciplinary record appeared in that system under the information you entered. It does not establish that:
- No complaint was ever filed
- No confidential proceeding or diversion occurred
- No sealed record exists
- No older action falls outside the online look-back period
- The lawyer is competent, responsive, or a good fit for your matter
California specifically excludes confidential and sealed proceedings from public online viewing. Arizona identifies diversion records as confidential and explains that sanction-related records generally become public after an order is entered. Those rules make “no public discipline shown” a narrow result, not a certification of a spotless professional history.

Once you have verified each candidate, compare the records in the same order so that a prominent profile or polished biography does not influence the review.
- Current eligibility: Compare the exact status label in every licensing jurisdiction and the date each profile was checked.
- Scope of licensing: Note where each lawyer is licensed and whether the matter will be handled in a jurisdiction covered by that license.
- Sanctions and dispositions: List the sanction, date, and final disposition rather than treating every entry as equivalent.
- Underlying documents: Mark whether you could open the final order or docket and whether the record states findings, conditions, or an effective date.
- Record limits: Note look-back periods, confidential categories, sealed material, and any older records that require a separate request.
- Matter fit: Evaluate experience and communication for your specific legal problem separately from the disciplinary search. A public record search cannot measure competence or compatibility.

Make one page or digital note for each candidate. Include these fields:

- Full name searched and alternate spellings
- City, firm, and other identifiers used
- Each licensing jurisdiction checked
- Official profile or agency consulted
- Exact status label and status date
- Date and time of your search
- Every discipline entry, including sanction and action date
- Reference, case, or docket number
- Underlying orders or documents opened
- Look-back period or confidentiality rule stated by the jurisdiction
- Requests sent for older, certified, or missing records
- Written responses received from the agency
This record prevents you from confusing two lawyers with similar names and gives you a clear basis for follow-up questions.

Searching only one state
A lawyer’s home office does not establish the full licensing picture. Search every jurisdiction in which the lawyer is admitted or says they practice.
Using a name without checking identifiers
A name-only match can identify the wrong person. Confirm city, attorney number, admission year, and contact information before attributing an action to the lawyer you are considering.
Stopping at a search-result snippet
Search results can omit status dates and document links. Open the official profile and read the discipline section.
Assuming an empty section means a full lifetime check
Look-back periods differ. Florida’s online discipline display covers 10 years, while California describes a history from admission to present but excludes confidential and sealed matters. Ask what the system does not display.
Treating every complaint as a finding
Public profiles and orders may distinguish allegations, dismissed matters, diversion, and sanctions. Read the disposition and the final order rather than inferring misconduct from a case reference alone.
Failing to verify a changed status
Status can change after your search. Record the date, and recheck immediately before signing an engagement agreement if the hiring decision is delayed.
Questions to ask before signing an engagement agreement
The official record should drive focused questions, not a demand that the lawyer explain every rumor on the internet. Ask for clarification when a profile shows a sanction, a restriction, or an unexplained status change:
- Which licensing jurisdiction issued the order?
- What was the final disposition and effective date?
- Are there current conditions, restrictions, or monitoring requirements relevant to this representation?
- Is another lawyer in the firm expected to handle the work, and is that person properly licensed for the matter?
- Can the lawyer provide the public order or explain where the official copy can be obtained?
Keep the answers with the profile and order you reviewed. If the status is suspended, disbarred, or otherwise says the lawyer is not eligible to practice, contact the licensing authority before taking any further step.

The ABA describes its National Lawyer Regulatory Data Bank as the only national repository of public regulatory actions relating to lawyers throughout the United States. It accepts individual name or regulatory-action verification requests when the requester confirms the request in writing.

It does not replace the state agency’s profile for current eligibility, local procedures, or records that are confidential, sealed, or not public. Begin with the state where the lawyer is known to be licensed, then use the national request to help identify public actions across jurisdictions.
What this check can—and cannot—decide
A disciplinary-history check answers a narrow but important question: what public regulatory information is associated with this lawyer in the jurisdictions and time periods you searched? It can reveal current eligibility, public sanctions, dates, dispositions, and source documents. It cannot certify the lawyer’s skill, honesty, communication, workload, pricing, or suitability for your legal problem.
Use the result alongside a written engagement agreement, a clear explanation of fees and responsibilities, and independent judgment about the lawyer’s fit. If the official record is incomplete, ask the agency how to obtain the missing material rather than treating an empty online result as a guarantee.
