Record the fiscal dates, total reported sales, comparable-store percentage, currency basis and any adjusted measures. Then read the issuer’s definition and reconcile comparable sales with non-comparable sales, foreign-exchange translation and reported revenue. The percentage is meaningful only within that company’s stated store, channel and accounting rules.
What the two numbers actually measure
Same-store sales growth is a selected comparable base
Same-store sales, also called comparable-store sales, measures the change in sales from a defined group of locations or channels that qualify for comparison in both periods. It is not a measure of every sale the company made. The issuer decides which stores, websites, brands and transactions are eligible and explains those rules in its filing.

That formula describes the arithmetic, not a universal accounting rule. Eligibility can depend on how long a store has been open, whether it was acquired, whether it closed temporarily, how relocations are handled, and whether online or service-plan revenue is included. Signet’s filing, for example, defines same-store sales as a comparison of stores open in both the current and prior fiscal year, excludes foreign-exchange effects, and adds stores after their 12-month anniversary. Read the company’s own wording rather than importing another retailer’s definition (Signet’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended May 2, 2026).
Revenue is the company’s reported sales total
Quarterly revenue (often labelled net sales or total sales) is the amount reported in the income statement for the entire business during the fiscal period. It can include newly opened stores, acquired operations, e-commerce, outlets that do not qualify for the comparable base, and currency translation. Revenue growth therefore answers a different question: how much did the company report in total, rather than how did the selected continuing base perform?
A positive comparable-store rate can coexist with flat or falling revenue if stores leave the base, newly opened locations underperform, an acquisition is absent from the prior period, or currency translation reduces the reported amount. Conversely, revenue can rise while same-store sales fall when new stores, acquisitions or other non-comparable activity more than offsets the decline.
Start with the matching fiscal period
Do not assume that “the second quarter” means April through June or that two companies’ quarters contain the same number of days. Retailers commonly use 13-week periods and 52- or 53-week fiscal years. Signet’s fiscal 2027 second quarter covered the 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026, while its first quarter covered the 13 weeks ended May 2, 2026.
Write these fields at the top of your worksheet before copying any percentage:
- Company and fiscal year.
- Quarter number and exact start and end dates.
- Number of weeks or days.
- Reporting currency.
- Whether each figure is reported, constant-currency or another adjusted measure.
- Prior-period dates used for the comparison.
If the current and prior periods are not aligned, stop and resolve the calendar difference. A percentage copied from a press release without its fiscal dates can produce a false trend.
Collect the two primary documents
- Open the investor-relations quarterly release. Find the release for the exact fiscal quarter. It usually gives headline revenue, comparable-store growth and a table separating different sales effects.
- Open the matching interim filing. For a United States issuer this is commonly Form 10-Q. Verify that the filing covers the same quarter and fiscal year as the release.
- Save the publication dates and links. Keep the release and filing together in your notes so a later revision or recast can be traced.
- Check the period labels inside both documents. A release may use “Q2,” while the filing states a precise 13-week period. Use the precise dates in your analysis.
The release is efficient for locating headline figures; the filing is where definitions, accounting treatment and changes in methodology are normally explained. Neither document should be treated as a substitute for the other.

Record quarterly revenue without mixing bases
Capture the reported total first
From the income-statement table or results summary, record total revenue or total sales for the current and prior fiscal periods, the currency and the year-over-year change. If the release states both a dollar amount and a percentage, retain both. For example, Signet’s first-quarter fiscal 2027 release states that total sales increased 0.8% year over year to $1.55 billion in the 13 weeks ended May 2, 2026 (Signet’s Q1 fiscal 2027 results release).
Separate reported and adjusted growth
A company may show reported-currency sales, constant-currency sales or another non-GAAP measure. Put each in a separate row. Constant-currency growth removes the effect of exchange-rate movements; it is an analytical view, not the amount recognized in the reported income statement. Signet identifies constant-currency sales growth as a non-GAAP measure and discusses its reconciliation in its annual filing (Signet’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K).
Do not label constant-currency growth “revenue growth” without qualification. A useful worksheet has columns such as:
| Field | Current period | Prior period | Basis or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total reported revenue or sales | Enter the issuer’s amount | Enter the issuer’s amount | Reported currency |
| Year-over-year reported growth | Enter percentage | Not applicable | Check the issuer’s calculation |
| Total sales at constant exchange rates | Enter if disclosed | Enter if disclosed | Adjusted/non-GAAP where stated |
| Currency translation effect | Enter if disclosed | Not applicable | Keep separate from operating growth |
Find the comparable-sales percentage and read its definition
Search the release and filing for “same-store sales,” “comparable store sales” and “comparable sales.” Copy the exact percentage and its sign. Then locate the paragraph or footnote that defines the measure. At minimum, answer the following questions:
- Store-age threshold: How many months or fiscal periods must a location operate before entering the comparable base?
- Closures: Are temporarily closed stores adjusted, excluded or retained? When does a permanently closed store leave the base?
- Relocations: Is a moved store treated as the same location or a new one?
- Acquisitions and disposals: When do acquired or sold stores become eligible, and are prior periods recast?
- Channel scope: Does the measure include physical stores, e-commerce, ship-to-store transactions or other channels?
- Currency: Is the percentage calculated in local currency, constant currency or reported currency?
- Accounting items: Are service-plan or other deferred revenues included on the same timing as total sales?
- Brand scope: Are all banners and digital brands included?
- Week alignment: Does the company compare the same fiscal weeks or use another calendar adjustment?
Signet’s revised methodology illustrates why these questions matter. Its filing explains the 12-month anniversary rule, foreign-exchange exclusion, closure-period adjustments and revised treatment of extended service plans. It also states that Blue Nile and James Allen sales were excluded from the same-store calculation beginning in Q2 fiscal 2027 (Form 10-Q). That percentage cannot automatically be compared with a jewellery company that includes digital brands or uses a different eligibility period.
Reconcile same-store growth to total revenue
Use a bridge when the release provides one. The most useful layout keeps operating performance and reporting effects distinct:
| Bridge component | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Same-store sales | Performance of the issuer’s eligible comparable base | Read with the definition and scope |
| Non-same-store sales | Contribution from stores or channels outside that base | Look for new, acquired or otherwise non-comparable activity |
| Total sales at constant exchange rates | Combined operating sales before currency translation | Keep separate from reported revenue |
| Exchange translation | Effect of converting local results into the reporting currency | Do not treat it as store-level demand |
| Total reported sales | Amount recognized in the reported period | Use this for the headline revenue conclusion |
Do not add percentages mechanically. Same-store sales is calculated on one denominator, while total revenue includes different businesses and effects. Only use an arithmetic bridge when the company supplies values calculated on consistent bases. If a component is not disclosed, mark it “not disclosed” rather than estimating it from rounded percentages.

Current illustration: Signet’s fiscal 2027 results
Second quarter
Signet’s Q2 fiscal 2027 release reports same-store sales growth of 2.2% for the 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026 (Q2 fiscal 2027 results release). The release table separates same-store sales, non-same-store sales, total sales at constant exchange rates, exchange translation and total reported sales. Use those rows to understand how the comparable result relates to the reported total; do not treat 2.2% as an industry benchmark.

First quarter
For Q1 fiscal 2027, Signet reported total sales of $1.55 billion, up 0.8% year over year, and same-store sales up 1.8% for the 13 weeks ended May 2, 2026 (Q1 fiscal 2027 results release).
| Signet period | Fiscal length and end date | Reported total-sales result | Same-store result | Methodology note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 fiscal 2027 | 13 weeks ended May 2, 2026 | Up 0.8% to $1.55 billion | Up 1.8% | Beginning in Q1 fiscal 2027, the calculation no longer used the adjustment reflected in total sales for deferring extended service agreements. |
| Q2 fiscal 2027 | 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026 | Use the release’s reported-sales row | Up 2.2% | Beginning in Q2 fiscal 2027, Blue Nile and James Allen sales were excluded from the same-store calculation under the revised method. |
Because the definition changed, compare the historical percentages only after reading the filing’s revised or recast tables. The Q2 filing presents revised historical comparisons and explains the scope change; a simple sequence of 1.8% followed by 2.2% is not sufficient to establish an uninterrupted trend.
Check for revisions before calculating a trend
Before plotting quarterly percentages, search the filing for “revised,” “recast,” “methodology,” “definition,” “restated” and “comparable.” Then check:
- Whether historical percentages were recalculated under a new rule.
- Whether the fiscal-week alignment changed.
- Whether a brand, website or channel entered or left the measure.
- Whether service-plan revenue is recognized differently from the prior period.
- Whether closure or relocation treatment changed.
If the issuer provides a recast history, use the recast figures consistently. If it does not, put a break marker in your chart and explain that the series is not fully comparable across the change. Never splice old and new definitions into one apparently continuous line.

A percentage-only league table is misleading. Build a definition table first, using “not disclosed” where the documents do not provide an answer.
| Comparison axis | Company A | Company B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible-store threshold | Document the months or periods | Document the months or periods | New stores may be included at different times |
| Closures and relocations | Document treatment | Document treatment | Store exits can change the denominator |
| Physical and digital channels | Document included channels | Document included channels | Online growth may be inside one measure but outside another |
| Currency basis | Reported or constant currency | Reported or constant currency | Exchange movements can reverse the ranking |
| Period alignment | Weeks and dates | Weeks and dates | Different fiscal calendars affect seasonality |
| Brand and accounting scope | Brands, service plans and exclusions | Brands, service plans and exclusions | Different revenue timing changes the percentage |
| Revenue bridge | Rows disclosed | Rows disclosed | Shows whether non-comparable sales drove total growth |
Only call the rates directly comparable when the bases, periods and currency treatments are aligned. Otherwise, describe the difference explicitly—for example, “Company A reports constant-currency physical-store comparables, while Company B includes digital sales in a reported-currency measure.”

A practical worksheet and calculation check
For each quarter, keep one row with the following fields:
- Fiscal quarter, exact dates and number of weeks.
- Reported revenue or sales, current and prior period.
- Reported year-over-year percentage, as stated by the issuer.
- Same-store or comparable-sales percentage.
- Definition URL and a short summary of the eligible base.
- Constant-currency sales and growth, if disclosed.
- Non-same-store sales, currency translation and other bridge rows.
- Methodology changes, recast status and brand/channel exclusions.
As a reasonableness check, calculate reported growth from the two reported revenue amounts:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

(current reported revenue − prior reported revenue) ÷ prior reported revenue × 100
Expect a small difference if the release rounds amounts or percentages. A large difference usually indicates that you mixed fiscal periods, currencies, continuing operations and total operations, or reported and constant-currency figures. Recheck the table headings before drawing a conclusion.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Treating same-store sales as total revenue
Symptom: You report a 2.2% comparable increase as proof that total revenue rose 2.2%.
Fix: Quote the comparable percentage and reported revenue as separate measures, then use the bridge to explain the difference.

Mixing reported and constant-currency growth
Symptom: One company’s rate excludes exchange movements while the other’s includes them.
Fix: Put the measures in separate columns and label constant-currency figures as adjusted when the issuer does.

Ignoring a definition change
Symptom: A trend appears to accelerate or collapse when the company actually changed the comparable base.
Fix: Read the filing’s methodology section, use recast history where supplied and mark any unbridgeable break.
Filling undisclosed bridge rows with estimates
Symptom: You infer non-comparable sales by subtracting rounded growth rates.
Fix: Record “not disclosed.” Growth percentages with different denominators cannot be subtracted reliably.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A strong quarterly note states the fiscal period, reported revenue, comparable-sales result, currency basis and definition scope in one place. It then explains whether non-comparable activity or foreign exchange caused the two measures to diverge and identifies any methodology change that limits the trend. For Signet’s dated example, the defensible wording is that same-store sales rose 2.2% in the 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026, under the company’s revised definition; the release’s reported-sales row must be quoted separately, and the filing’s exclusions and recast history must accompany any comparison with earlier quarters or another jewellery company.
