Protect your files first. If a drive reports a SMART error, starts behaving erratically, produces unusual mechanical noises, or repeatedly causes disk errors, copy important data to separate storage before running repair commands or lengthy tests. A SMART check and a manufacturer diagnostic tell you about drive hardware; CHKDSK and macOS Disk Utility primarily examine a volume or file system. You need both kinds of checks to investigate a suspicious disk, and a single passing test never guarantees that the drive will not fail later.

What “healthy” means for a hard drive

Drive health has two separate dimensions:

  • Hardware condition: SMART telemetry and the drive maker’s self-tests look for conditions such as read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature, and increasing bad sectors.
  • File-system condition: Windows CHKDSK and macOS Disk Utility examine the metadata and structure that let the operating system find files on a volume.

A disk can have a damaged file system while its hardware remains sound, or it can have degrading hardware while the file system still appears normal. That is why CHKDSK is not a substitute for SMART, and why a SMART pass does not clear every file-system problem.

Signals that deserve immediate attention

  • A SMART warning shown by the computer, firmware, or a diagnostic utility.
  • Repeated operating-system messages about disk errors, corrupted files, or an inaccessible volume.
  • Long pauses when opening folders, disappearing files, unexplained read errors, or a drive that repeatedly disconnects.
  • Unusual clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up attempts, or other new mechanical sounds from a traditional hard disk.

These symptoms justify a backup and investigation, but none is a precise countdown to failure. Some drives fail without a useful warning, and SMART attribute names and thresholds differ by design and manufacturer.

Back up before you test or repair

When data matters, copying it is the first diagnostic step. A test cannot make an already failing mechanism reliable, and a repair operation can add stress or alter file-system metadata.

  1. Stop nonessential work. Do not continue downloading, editing large projects, or reorganizing the disk while it is showing errors.
  2. Copy irreplaceable files first. Start with photographs, documents, credentials, source code, and any files that do not exist elsewhere. If normal copying fails, copy the most important folders in smaller batches and note which files cannot be read.
  3. Use separate storage. An external hard drive can hold a backup copy, but it does not repair the suspect drive. Keep the backup disconnected when it is not being used so a later failure or malware event cannot affect both copies.
  4. Verify the copy. Open representative files from the backup and check that the folders and file sizes are present before proceeding with repairs or a long test.

Seagate support states: “A system S.M.A.R.T. error means you should backup your data as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups.” Treat that as an urgent data-protection instruction even when the computer still starts normally.

How the main checks differ

Check What it examines Typical scope and time Can it change data?
SMART status Drive telemetry and health attributes maintained by the storage device Quick status reading; available only when the drive and connection expose SMART Normally read-only
Short manufacturer self-test Drive-level diagnostic routines Shorter than a long test; exact duration and supported features depend on the drive and interface Designed as a diagnostic, not a file-system repair
Long manufacturer test A more extensive drive read and diagnostic pass Duration depends on capacity and drive speed and can take considerably longer than a short check Diagnostic operation; back up first because a weak drive may fail during a sustained read
Windows CHKDSK File-system and volume metadata, including logical and physical error checks Time depends on the volume and the selected switches Options such as /f or /r request repair or additional checking and can alter file-system metadata
macOS Disk Utility Health information for many Mac disks and volume-level checks available in the utility SMART information appears only when the disk and connection provide it Health viewing is not the same as a hardware self-test; use repair features cautiously after backing up

Read SMART status and run a manufacturer diagnostic

Why SMART matters

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) records operating conditions and error-related attributes inside a compatible drive. It may reveal patterns such as repeated read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature, or an increasing count of bad sectors. The interpretation is manufacturer-specific: an attribute label or threshold is not a universal failure date.

A SMART error is a warning to preserve data, not a prompt to keep using the disk until it stops. Seagate notes that a drive can appear to work normally after the warning and that another diagnostic may still report PASS. A pass therefore does not cancel the warning.

Use the drive maker’s utility when available

Manufacturer tools usually expose the device’s SMART status and offer short and longer self-tests. Seagate’s SeaTools is one example; its support material lists editions for Windows, Linux, and bootable media. The equivalent utility for another manufacturer may use different names and may support a different set of tests.

  1. Identify the exact physical drive. Record the model and serial number shown by the operating system or firmware. This prevents testing the wrong disk when several are installed.
  2. Install or boot the appropriate diagnostic edition. Use a Windows or Linux utility when the operating system can communicate reliably with the drive, or use the maker’s bootable version when the installed system is unstable.
  3. Read the SMART status first. Save or photograph the result, including any error code, before launching another test.
  4. Run the short test. This is a convenient first diagnostic and normally finishes sooner than the long test. Do not assume that every USB enclosure or storage controller passes all diagnostic commands through to the drive.
  5. Run the long test when the drive is readable and the data is backed up. Seagate describes its long test as reading the drive; capacity and speed determine how long it takes, and large or slower disks may require hours.
  6. Record the final result and error code. Keep it with the drive’s model and serial number if you need warranty or replacement support.

A manufacturer diagnostic failure is a strong replacement signal. Seagate’s guidance says that a generated SeaTools error means the drive needs replacement. Preserve whatever data remains and arrange a replacement or applicable warranty service rather than relying on software repair to restore failing hardware.

Connection limitations

SMART pass-through and self-test support can vary when a drive is attached through a USB enclosure, docking station, RAID controller, or other adapter. A missing SMART reading in that setup can mean the connection is hiding the information, not that the drive is healthy. If practical, test through a direct supported interface or the manufacturer’s bootable environment, while keeping the backup priority unchanged.

Check a Windows drive with CHKDSK

What CHKDSK can tell you

Microsoft describes CHKDSK as checking file-system and volume metadata for logical and physical errors. It can find an inconsistent directory structure or other volume problem that prevents Windows from locating files correctly. That is a different question from whether the drive’s motor, heads, flash cells, or internal error-handling statistics are degrading.

Run a read-focused check first

Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and substitute the correct drive letter:

chkdsk E:

This requests a check without adding a repair switch. If the volume is in use, Windows may offer to schedule the operation for the next restart. Accept that only after the important data is backed up.

Understand repair switches

Microsoft documents switches including /f and /r. They request corrective or more extensive checking rather than merely reporting the current state. Because repair can modify file-system metadata and a more extensive scan can keep a weak disk busy for a long time, use them after copying valuable data.

chkdsk E: /f
chkdsk E: /r

The command output may report that Windows found and corrected file-system issues, or that it found no problems. Neither result is a SMART verdict. If CHKDSK repeatedly finds new errors, the volume becomes inaccessible again, or the computer logs disk errors after a repair, investigate the hardware with SMART and the manufacturer’s diagnostic and prepare to replace the drive if a diagnostic fails.

Check a Mac drive with Disk Utility

Find the disk and its health information

  1. Open Applications, then Utilities, and launch Disk Utility.
  2. Use the View menu to show the device hierarchy if the physical disk is not visible.
  3. Select the physical disk or volume you need to inspect and read the information shown for it.

Apple says that Disk Utility can check the health of many disks and that many disks provide SMART hardware status. “Many” is important: not every disk, enclosure, or connection exposes SMART. If Disk Utility cannot provide a SMART reading, interpret that as unavailable information, not as a clean bill of health.

Separate a volume problem from a hardware warning

Disk Utility’s volume checks can identify directory or structural problems that affect how macOS reads a volume. A clean volume check does not prove that the physical disk will continue working, and an unavailable SMART reading does not prove that it is failing. When the Mac shows repeated read errors, stalls, or disappearing volumes, copy data first and use the drive maker’s supported diagnostic where possible.

Interpret the result and choose the next action

Result or symptom What it establishes Next action
SMART warning The drive has reported a condition that deserves attention; the computer may still appear normal Back up immediately, save the diagnostic details, run a supported manufacturer test if the data is safe, and plan replacement
Manufacturer test fails The drive diagnostic found an error significant enough to report Preserve remaining data and replace the drive or contact the applicable warranty service; do not depend on repair software to make the hardware reliable
CHKDSK or a Mac volume check reports file-system errors The volume metadata needs attention; this alone does not diagnose hardware failure Back up, then use the documented repair option cautiously and monitor for recurring errors
All tests pass but symptoms continue No tested condition was detected at that moment; intermittent, connection, controller, or operating-system faults remain possible Check cables, power, enclosure or controller behavior, system logs, and another supported connection; keep a current backup and do not declare the disk permanently healthy
SMART is unavailable The drive or connection did not expose SMART information to the utility Try the manufacturer’s supported interface or bootable diagnostic if practical, and judge the disk by its symptoms and other test results rather than treating “unsupported” as PASS

Common mistakes that make diagnosis less safe

Starting with repair instead of preservation

Repair switches can change metadata. If a drive is physically deteriorating, a long operation can also be the point at which it stops responding. Copy irreplaceable files before CHKDSK repair, volume repair, firmware work, or a long diagnostic.

Treating one PASS as a guarantee

SMART attributes are not identical across manufacturers, and a test samples the drive under particular conditions. Seagate specifically warns that some tests can still show PASS after the system has reported a SMART error. Keep backups even after a clean result.

Assuming every noise is software-related

File-system repair cannot fix a failing motor, head assembly, media surface, or controller. New clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up attempts, or severe access delays should move data protection ahead of experimentation.

Blaming the disk before checking the path

A bad cable, inadequate power, USB bridge, enclosure, RAID controller, or operating-system problem can create symptoms that resemble a dead drive. Change one connection component at a time and retest without losing track of which physical disk is being examined. A connection problem and a failing disk can also coexist, so a temporary improvement is not proof that the disk is safe.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Notice a warning or symptom. Stop unnecessary writes and identify the affected physical disk.
  2. Copy valuable data. Use separate storage and verify the copy before repairs.
  3. Read SMART. Use the manufacturer utility or a supported diagnostic environment. Treat an error as urgent even if the system remains usable.
  4. Run a short manufacturer self-test. Record the result and error code.
  5. Run the long test only when the backup is safe. Allow for a much longer read on a large or slower disk, and confirm that the connection supports the test.
  6. Use CHKDSK or Disk Utility for volume problems. These tools address file-system structure; they do not replace the hardware diagnostic.
  7. Decide on replacement. A failed manufacturer test or continuing SMART warning warrants replacement planning, data migration, and warranty contact where applicable.
  8. Keep monitoring after a pass. Repeated errors, new noises, or recurring disconnects require another investigation even when the last test was clean.

How to reduce the impact of the next failure

  • Maintain more than one copy of files that cannot be recreated, with at least one copy on separate storage.
  • Keep the backup disconnected when it is not actively syncing or being used.
  • Record drive models, serial numbers, diagnostic results, and the date of each check so a new error can be compared with earlier behavior.
  • Replace a disk after a confirmed manufacturer diagnostic failure instead of using a clean file-system check as justification to keep it in service.
  • When a disk is still under warranty, preserve the diagnostic error code and follow the manufacturer’s replacement process after the data is safe.

The most reliable answer to “How do I check if my hard drive is healthy?” is a sequence, not a single button: protect the data, read SMART, run the maker’s diagnostic, use CHKDSK or Disk Utility to address file-system issues separately, and replace the drive when hardware diagnostics fail or warnings persist.
