How to Check a Cinema Camera Before Buying: Test the LCD, Ports, and Recording

Before buying a used cinema camera, inspect its body and LCD, confirm it recognizes a battery and compatible media, then make a short internal recording and play it back. Test HDMI or SDI with the external device you plan to use. These checks can reveal basic faults, but a brief inspection cannot establish sensor condition, sustained-recording reliability, or future service needs.

What to bring to inspect a used cinema camera

  • A charged, compatible battery and media, if the seller permits you to supply them. Check the specific camera manual for supported types.
  • An external monitor and a compatible HDMI or SDI cable if you need to verify video output. Confirm the camera’s connector and output compatibility in its manual before buying a cable.
  • An external recorder only if recording through one is part of your intended setup.

Port layouts and supported media vary by model. For example, Sony lists HDMI on the PXW-Z200 and HXR-NX800, while SDI is available on the PXW-Z200 only; see Sony’s PXW-Z200 product guide for that family’s connector information.

Inspect the body and LCD before powering on

Check the body and fittings

Look over the camera for impact damage, loose parts, and signs that handles or accessories are not secure. Panasonic’s AJ-PX270EJ operating procedure specifically tells users to check that accessories and handle sections are not loose or rattling before recording (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ pre-recording procedure).

Check the display

Power the camera when it is safe to do so and inspect the LCD for visible damage, flicker, uneven brightness, or image defects. Move the screen through its normal articulation and check touch response if that model has a touch display. There is no universal grading threshold for a used-camera LCD; judge whether the display is stable and usable for your work, and compare the live image with playback later in the inspection.

Confirm power, media, and camera status

Start the camera and look for normal startup behavior and any warning messages. Check that the battery is recognized and has charge, and that the camera recognizes compatible media with available recording space. Panasonic’s pre-recording checklist includes sufficient battery charge, remaining media capacity, and the absence of a backup-battery warning. Consult the manual for the exact media type and compatibility requirements of the camera you are inspecting.

Make an internal recording and play it back

  1. Choose a basic recording mode. Use a mode the camera supports and for which the installed media is suitable. Do not assume that an unfamiliar card or an advanced codec setting is compatible.
  2. Record a brief clip using the camera’s controls. Confirm that the recording indicator or tally light behaves as expected. Panasonic’s procedure checks both the card-access LED and tally lamp during recording.
  3. Stop recording and confirm it completes. Check that the camera returns to a ready state and shows the clip in playback or thumbnail view.
  4. Play the clip on the camera. Check that the picture appears on the LCD or viewfinder and that sound is present when the test was made with audio. Watch for playback stopping unexpectedly. Panasonic’s instructions specifically call for playing the newly recorded clip and confirming it on the viewfinder or LCD (Panasonic AJ-PX270EJ pre-recording procedure).

A completed record-and-playback check is a useful basic function test, not proof that every recording format works or that the camera will remain reliable during a long shoot.

Test the HDMI or SDI port you will actually use

  1. Identify the connector and output. Check the camera’s manual to confirm whether it has HDMI, SDI, or both, and whether the intended output mode is supported.
  2. Connect a compatible monitor. Use a cable that matches the camera’s connector and a monitor that accepts the camera’s signal. For HDMI, a compatible HDMI cable can help perform this check, but cable fit alone does not establish signal compatibility.
  3. Check the image and connection. Confirm that the monitor receives a stable picture. Carefully observe whether the connector feels secure; do not force a plug or wiggle it aggressively.
  4. Test external recording if it matters to your setup. Record through the external device and review its result for picture and audio. Canon’s manual recommends test recording after connecting an external recorder to verify that audio and video are recorded correctly (Canon EOS C70 instruction manual).

Take care with SDI accessories

Connection and power order can be model-specific. RED warns that, under certain circumstances, an SDI connector on the KOMODO-X can be damaged if an accessory is powered without shielded cables. RED’s guidance is to power the accessory and ensure power is connected to the camera before connecting BNC; disconnect the camera-side BNC before removing accessory power. Follow the camera and accessory manuals rather than applying that sequence as a universal rule (RED KOMODO-X Operation Guide).

Check What to note
LCD Visible damage, flicker or brightness inconsistency; stable live view and playback; articulation and touch response where supported.
Internal recording Whether the camera records a clip, completes the recording, and plays picture and sound back.
Required ports Whether the port needed for your workflow is present and provides a stable signal to a compatible external device.
Battery and media Whether the camera recognizes the battery and compatible media, shows available space, and starts without a relevant warning.

What this inspection cannot prove

  • A short clip does not establish sensor condition or image quality across the sensor and all recording modes.
  • It does not prove full codec performance, sustained recording under long loads, or overall reliability.
  • It cannot determine future service needs. The cited manufacturer procedures describe checks for their own models; they are not a universal standard for grading used cinema cameras.
