How to Check a Chromebook’s Update Support and Install ChromeOS Updates

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

To see whether your Chromebook is still supported, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details and read the date under Update schedule. To install an available update, connect to Wi‑Fi, open Settings > About ChromeOS, select Check for updates, then choose Restart when ChromeOS asks you to finish. Keep the Chromebook connected to power during the download and restart.

The date is specific to your device or platform. A general policy such as “10 years” is not a substitute for the date shown in your Chromebook’s settings.

How to check if your Chromebook is still getting updates

ChromeOS shows the support deadline for the Chromebook you are actually using. This is more reliable than estimating from the purchase date, the age of the battery, or the year a retailer first listed the model. A Chromebook bought second-hand can have considerably less support remaining than its purchase date suggests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. At the bottom-left, select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Additional details.
  5. Find Update schedule and read the displayed date.

The page normally says something like “This device will get automatic updates until [specified date].” That is the device’s current automatic-update end date. It is the date to use when deciding whether the Chromebook remains suitable for everyday work, school, browsing, or other tasks that depend on a current browser.

Write down the date along with the exact model name if you are evaluating several devices. The model name printed on a case or product listing may be abbreviated, while Google’s schedule distinguishes individual platforms and products. If you are checking a Chromebook before buying it, ask the seller for the precise model and compare that entry with Google’s current Auto Update policy schedule.

What the date means

Until the listed date, Google’s automatic-update service is scheduled to provide ChromeOS and browser updates for the device. Those updates can include security fixes, bug fixes, new features, and compatibility changes. ChromeOS and the browser are updated together through the operating system’s built-in updater; you do not normally need a separate browser installer.

After the final update, the Chromebook can continue to start and run, but it is no longer scheduled to receive ChromeOS or browser updates. Over time, websites, extensions, and applications can require newer browser or ChromeOS capabilities. A device may therefore remain usable for some tasks while becoming less suitable for accounts, services, or workflows that depend on current security and compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the page says updates are managed by an administrator

A work- or school-managed Chromebook may show “Updates are managed by your administrator” instead of giving you normal update controls. The organization can set update policies, delay a release, or restrict changes. If you cannot see the expected controls on a managed device, contact the school or employer’s administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.

Administrator management can also explain why two otherwise similar Chromebooks behave differently. The device may be online and eligible for an update, yet the organization may have scheduled a later installation window. Only the organization managing the Chromebook can change those settings.

How to check for and install a ChromeOS update

Chromebooks normally check for updates and download them automatically when connected to the internet. Google Chromebook Help describes this behavior as the Chromebook automatically checking for and downloading updates when it connects to the internet. You can also start the check manually.

  1. Turn on the Chromebook and connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Select the time in the bottom-right corner, then select Settings.
  3. At the bottom-left, select About ChromeOS.
  4. Under Google ChromeOS, note the version currently installed.
  5. Select Check for updates.
  6. If ChromeOS finds an update, allow the download to complete. When the notification appears, select Restart to install it.

Plug in the charger before checking. A restart during an update should not be interrupted by a depleted battery. Save open work and close applications before selecting Restart. The ordinary update path is an in-place update, not a factory reset, but anything unsaved in an open document can still be lost if you restart without saving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can leave the Chromebook connected to Wi‑Fi while the package downloads and continue other work until ChromeOS requests the restart. The restart is the step that switches the device to the new version, so do not assume the update is complete merely because the download has finished.

If Check for updates is not available

If the button is missing, the Chromebook may already be up to date, or an administrator may control updates. First verify that the device is online and revisit About ChromeOS. Check the version shown under Google ChromeOS; it gives you a useful record when asking for help. On a managed Chromebook, ask the administrator whether an update is being deferred or blocked.

What happens when you use mobile data

ChromeOS can identify that an update will use a phone connection or other metered data. It may show how much data is needed and let you stop or continue. Continue only if the allowance and connection are adequate; otherwise connect to Wi‑Fi and run the check again. A paused download is not evidence that the Chromebook has reached its support date; it may simply be waiting for an unmetered connection.

Understanding Chromebook automatic-update support

Google’s current consumer guidance says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive updates for 10 years. Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help describes the policy as 10 years of automatic updates from the platform release date. The period is tied to the device platform’s release, not simply to the day you bought a particular unit. The exact final date still varies, so the on-device Update schedule entry remains the quickest authoritative check.

Why “10 years” does not give you one universal date

Two Chromebooks purchased in the same year can have different support deadlines because they use different platforms and were released at different times. Conversely, a Chromebook bought long after its launch may have less than 10 years remaining. Use the exact model and platform row in Google’s current automatic-update policy schedule when the on-device date is unavailable or when you are checking a device before purchase.

The 10-year statement is a policy period, not a promise that every Chromebook receives updates for 10 years from the day a customer opens the box. It also does not mean every older Chromebook automatically qualifies for the same treatment. The schedule identifies the approved devices and their dates.

End of sale is not the end of updates

The manufacturer controls when a model stops being sold. That end-of-sale date is separate from Google’s update eligibility. A device can leave store shelves while still receiving updates, or remain in use after sales have ended but be close to its final update. Do not infer the support deadline from a retailer listing, a discontinued-product notice, or the date a manufacturer stopped advertising it.

What a “Final software update” notice means

If ChromeOS displays a “Final software update” notification, the device is reaching the end of its scheduled support. After that final release, it will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates. Security fixes, bug fixes, new features, and compatibility with applications that require a newer ChromeOS or browser version may therefore stop arriving.

A final-update message is different from a temporary update failure. Confirm the wording and check the date in About ChromeOS before troubleshooting a network problem. If the displayed date has passed, repeatedly selecting Check for updates will not create a later release through the normal service.

Use Google’s schedule when you need to verify a model

The settings page is best for a Chromebook in your hands. For a device you are buying, inheriting, or managing in quantity, check Google’s current automatic-update policy schedule and match the exact product or platform row. Model names can be similar, and a family name alone may not identify the correct platform.

  • Record the complete model designation, not just the manufacturer name.
  • Match the platform or device entry exactly in the schedule.
  • Read the published automatic-update date rather than calculating one from the model’s sale date.
  • Recheck the live schedule because eligibility and dates can change as Google updates the policy table.

If a listing does not disclose an automatic-update end date, treat the missing date as an information gap. Do not assume that a newer-looking chassis, a recent discount, or a recently refurbished unit means a long support period. Before a purchase, the support date is a more meaningful comparison than the original launch price.

What to do when your Chromebook has reached its final update

Google identifies two practical choices: continue using the Chromebook with the understanding that software updates have ended, or consider a newer Chromebook. Continuing may be reasonable for low-risk, offline work, but the browser and operating system will not gain later security fixes or compatibility improvements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continue using it with clear limits

If you keep the device, avoid treating an unsupported Chromebook as equivalent to a current one. Be cautious with sensitive accounts and files, because the operating system and browser will remain on their last supported versions. Some websites and applications may eventually require a newer browser or ChromeOS release. Keep backups of important local files and monitor whether essential services still work.

There is no ordinary setting that extends a device’s published support period. A reset, powerwash, or reinstall does not change the platform’s eligibility date. If the Chromebook is managed by an organization, ask its administrator about the approved replacement or retirement process rather than attempting an unsupported workaround.

Consider a replacement by support date, not just hardware age

When comparing replacement Chromebooks, make the exact published automatic-update end date a primary criterion. A device that costs less today but reaches its final update sooner may provide less useful support than a slightly different configuration with a later date. Other buying criteria—screen, ports, memory, storage, and performance—are separate decisions; first establish how long Google supports the candidate device.

Google’s guidance does not require a particular replacement brand or model. Compare the official support date for each candidate and then evaluate the hardware features that matter to you. A retailer’s “new” or “refurbished” label does not replace the published automatic-update date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extended updates for some older Chromebooks

Some eligible pre-2021 Chromebooks can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform’s release. Google marks qualifying models in its device schedule, often with an asterisk, and the option appears in ChromeOS settings for eligible devices during their final support years.

Extended updates are not a routine update toggle. Opting in is permanent, so decide only after checking what you would lose. Read the remaining support date shown for your own device and confirm that the model is marked as eligible before making a choice.

Choice What you keep or receive What changes or is lost
Opt in to extended updates Continued ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates through the device’s extended support period. Android apps and Google Play Store access are removed. Android app-related data stored on the Chromebook is erased. The choice cannot be reversed.
Decline extended updates Existing Android apps, Google Play Store access, and Android app data remain on the Chromebook. Automatic ChromeOS updates do not continue. App developers may stop supporting the older environment over time.

How to decide

  • Choose extended updates only if continued ChromeOS security and stability matter more to you than Android apps, Play Store access, and the Android data that will be removed.
  • Decline if Android functionality is essential and you accept that automatic updates will stop.
  • Back up files and app data you need before making any irreversible choice.
  • Confirm the remaining support date shown for your device before opting in.
  • Make sure everyone who uses the Chromebook understands that the Play Store and Android applications will disappear after enrollment.

Do not opt in merely because the Chromebook is old. The decision is a trade-off between a longer-supported ChromeOS environment and the complete removal of Android functionality on the device. If Android app data matters, preserve what you can before accepting the change; opting out later is not available.

Troubleshooting an update that will not install

The Chromebook cannot find an update

  • Confirm that Wi‑Fi is connected and working by opening a webpage.
  • Open Settings > About ChromeOS and select Check for updates again.
  • Check the installed version shown under Google ChromeOS.
  • Restart the Chromebook and repeat the check.
  • If the device is managed, ask the administrator whether updates are controlled or delayed.
  • Compare the date under Update schedule with the date you expected; a device at or beyond its final date will not receive a later normal update.

A device that is already on its latest available version may not show a new download. A device past its final update date will not receive a later ChromeOS release through the normal update service.

The download stops or the restart does not finish

  • Connect the charger and use a stable Wi‑Fi network.
  • Close unsaved work before restarting again.
  • If you were using mobile data, switch to Wi‑Fi to avoid a metered connection interrupting the download.
  • Allow the Chromebook time to complete the restart instead of repeatedly powering it off.

If the same failure continues, record the ChromeOS version, the support date, and whether the Chromebook is managed. Those details help an administrator or support technician distinguish a policy restriction from a device that has simply reached its final update.

The update is blocked at work or school

Administrator policy can remove or restrict update controls. The correct fix is to contact the organization that manages the Chromebook. A personal account or a local setting cannot override an administrator’s update policy.

The Chromebook says it has received its final update

There is no normal setting that extends the published support period. Check whether your model is eligible for the irreversible extended-update choice. If it is not, decide whether the device’s remaining uses justify running without future ChromeOS and browser updates or whether a newer supported Chromebook is appropriate.

Questions to answer before you update

Will installing an ordinary ChromeOS update erase my files?

The normal procedure is an in-place update: download it, then restart when prompted. Save your work before restarting, but the standard update path is not a factory reset. Extended-update enrollment is different because Android app access and Android app-related data are removed when you opt in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to download an update from a website?

No. ChromeOS checks and downloads updates through its built-in updater when the Chromebook is online. Use About ChromeOS > Check for updates rather than searching for a generic installer.

Can I install updates after the support date?

Not through the normal automatic-update service. Once the final update has been delivered, later ChromeOS and browser releases are not scheduled for that device. The only policy-based exception is an eligible model’s extended-update option, which must be accepted before relying on it and permanently removes Android functionality.

Why does my Chromebook’s date differ from a date I saw online?

Online dates may refer to a different platform, a similar model, a manufacturer’s end-of-sale date, or an older version of Google’s schedule. Verify the exact device in Update schedule or match its precise platform entry in Google’s current policy table.

Should I update while the battery is low?

Connect the Chromebook to power first. Google recommends a power source so the download and restart are less likely to be interrupted by an empty battery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all Chromebooks released before 2021 qualify for extended updates?

No. Only eligible models identified in Google’s device schedule can use the extended-update program. Check the exact model and the option shown in About ChromeOS; do not infer eligibility from age alone.

What happens to Android app data if I opt in?

Android apps and Google Play Store access are removed, and Android app-related data stored on the Chromebook is erased. Because enrollment cannot be reversed, back up anything you need and confirm that continued ChromeOS updates are worth that loss.

Can I keep Android apps and still receive the extended updates?

No. The two choices are linked: opting in provides the extended ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates but removes Android functionality; declining preserves Android apps and Play Store access but stops automatic ChromeOS updates.

Is a manufacturer’s end-of-sale date enough to judge support?

No. End of sale is controlled by the manufacturer and is unrelated to Google’s automatic-update eligibility. Use the date in your Chromebook’s settings or the exact row in Google’s current policy schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I compare when replacing an unsupported Chromebook?

Start with each candidate’s exact automatic-update end date. Then compare hardware features such as screen, ports, memory, storage, and performance. A lower price or newer-looking design does not by itself indicate a later support deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my Chromebook is still getting updates?

Open Settings, select About ChromeOS, choose Additional details, and read the date under Update schedule. A managed device may instead say that updates are managed by your administrator.

How do I check for a ChromeOS update?

Connect to Wi‑Fi, open Settings > About ChromeOS, and select Check for updates. If ChromeOS finds one, let it download and select Restart when prompted.

When will my Chromebook stop updating?

Read the device-specific date under About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule. Do not estimate it from the purchase date or the manufacturer’s end-of-sale date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I update my Chromebook?

Check Wi‑Fi, power, and the installed version. The device may already be current, may have reached its final update, or may be managed by a school or employer. Contact the administrator for a managed Chromebook.

What are extended updates?

Some eligible older Chromebooks can receive support for a total of 10 years from platform release. Opting in is irreversible and removes Android apps, Google Play Store access, and Android app-related data.

Do ordinary ChromeOS updates erase files?

No. The standard update is an in-place download followed by a restart, not a factory reset. Save open work before restarting, and treat extended-update enrollment separately because it erases Android app-related data.

The Bottom Line

Check Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details for your Chromebook’s exact automatic-update date. Install a normal update over Wi‑Fi, with the charger connected, by selecting Check for updates and then Restart. If support has ended, compare the risks of continued use with a replacement; for eligible older models, weigh the irreversible loss of Android apps and Play Store access before choosing extended updates.
