How to Check 5G Coverage and Bands Before Buying a Phone in India

Check two things before you buy: whether your operator predicts service at your exact locations, and whether the exact India variant of the phone supports that operator’s 5G bands. A “5G” label alone does not guarantee service at home, indoors or on your preferred network.

Use the operator’s live coverage map with your address or PIN code, then compare the phone’s specification sheet with the operator’s deployed bands. Repeat the check for your workplace and commute, verify 4G fallback and dual-SIM behavior, and buy only with a practical return option when indoor coverage matters.

The five-minute pre-purchase check

  1. Name the SIM you will use. Choose Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, BSNL or MTNL before comparing phones.
  2. Open that operator’s official coverage map. Search your exact home and office address or PIN code, not just your city.
  3. Switch to the 5G layer. If the map offers separate 4G, 5G and combined views, inspect 5G first and 4G as the fallback.
  4. Check every important location. Include the rooms where you use the phone, your workplace, regular commute and frequently visited indoor places.
  5. Read the India model’s full specification sheet. Match its 5G NR bands—especially n28 and n78—to your operator. Confirm the exact model number and region.
  6. Verify practical details. Check 4G bands, dual-SIM 5G behavior, software support and the seller’s return policy.

This process is more reliable than choosing the phone with the largest number of advertised 5G bands. A phone may support 5G generally but omit a band used where you live, or the listing may describe a different regional variant.

Step 1: Identify the operator and use its official map

Coverage belongs to a network, not to a handset. Start with the SIM that will actually be in the phone. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) provider directory names Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Reliance Jio, MTNL and Vodafone Idea. The Press Information Bureau’s 9 April 2025 release said operators providing wireless access had to publish service-wise geospatial coverage maps under a TRAI direction, with a cited publication deadline of 1 April 2025. In that release, BSNL and MTNL had not yet published maps.

Use the operator’s own map rather than a crowd-sourced speed map for the initial availability check. A map maintained by the carrier is the most direct statement of where that carrier predicts service, and it can change as sites and layers are updated.

Reliance Jio

Jio’s map accepts an address or PIN code and lets you toggle between 4G+5G, 5G and 4G. Jio describes the map as a tool showing areas where its wireless services are available, while warning that the display is approximate outdoor coverage. The map was listed as last updated on 10 July 2026, so note the date whenever you check it.

Airtel

Airtel’s map also supports address or PIN lookup and network-layer filters. Its notice says the display is approximate outdoor coverage and that actual coverage may vary. Airtel specifically lists buildings, terrain, foliage, construction, weather, network changes, usage and customer equipment as factors that can change the experience.

Vodafone Idea, BSNL and MTNL

Check Vodafone Idea’s current map directly before purchase. For BSNL and MTNL, do not assume that the absence of a map in the April 2025 government release means no service exists; it means that publication status was not established in that release. Look for a current official map or ask an authorised store to confirm service at your address.

Step 2: Search the exact places where you need 5G

Enter the complete address or PIN code for your home. Then repeat the search for your office, college, regular commute and any indoor room where mobile data is important. A city-level result can hide large differences between neighbourhoods, floors and buildings.

Record what the map shows at each place:

  • Whether a 5G layer is shown at all.
  • Whether the result is a narrow patch, a broad area or an edge between coverage colours.
  • Whether the map shows 4G coverage nearby for fallback.
  • The map’s last-updated date and any operator warning about predicted coverage.

Do not treat a coloured polygon as a guarantee of a 5G icon on your phone. Jio says its map represents approximate outdoor coverage. Airtel says its map does not reflect indoor availability. Walls, coated glass, lifts, basements, dense construction, terrain and the phone’s position can all reduce signal. Weather, foliage, network load, maintenance and later network changes can also alter results.

When the map shows coverage but your building is difficult

Prioritise a phone with strong 4G fallback and a seller return period. Ask someone already using the same operator to test the exact room at the times you normally need data. A map cannot establish a comparable nationwide percentage for reliable indoor 5G; local testing is the meaningful evidence.

Step 3: Understand the bands that matter in India

5G NR bands identify the radio frequencies a phone can use. For a buyer, the useful question is not “How many bands does this phone support?” but “Does it support the bands used by my operator in my locations?”

n28: 700 MHz coverage layer

n28 is the 700 MHz 5G band. Lower frequencies generally travel farther and penetrate buildings better than higher frequencies, although the result still depends on the site, antenna configuration, building materials and network settings. Jio lists n28 among its 5G bands.

n78: 3.5 GHz capacity layer

n78 is the 3.5 GHz class of 5G spectrum. It is widely used for capacity and speed, but its reach through walls is typically more limited than a low-band signal. Jio lists n78, and TRAI’s July 2025 detected-band report recorded 5G at 3500 MHz for Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea in the reported measurements.

n258: 26 GHz requirement to verify, not assume

Jio’s official FAQ lists n258 as well as n28 and n78. n258 is a very high-frequency 5G band with short range and strong sensitivity to obstructions. The fact that a carrier lists a band does not prove that it is active at your address or required for your use. Treat n258 as an operator-specific check when the exact plan, location or phone specification calls for it; do not use it as a reason to ignore n28, n78 or 4G fallback.

  • No Warranty. Compatible with Most GSM Carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, MetroPCS, etc. Will Also work with CDMA Carriers Such as Verizon, Sprint.

Step 4: Verify the exact India handset SKU

Manufacturers often sell several regional versions under one marketing name. Compare the full model number and India specification sheet, not a global product page, a retailer title or a review of another region’s device.

  • 5G NR list: Confirm n28 and n78 first, then check any operator-specific n258 requirement.
  • 4G LTE list: Verify the bands your operator uses locally so the phone remains usable when 5G is unavailable.
  • Region and model code: Match the code printed on the box, invoice or device settings with the Indian support page.
  • SIM configuration: Check whether both SIM slots can use 5G, whether 5G is available only on the primary slot, and whether enabling two SIMs changes 5G behavior.
  • Software and modem support: Confirm that the Indian firmware enables the advertised bands and that the manufacturer provides updates for the model.

A listing that says “5G supported” without a band table is incomplete evidence. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the precise NR and LTE list before paying. Keep a screenshot or copy of the specification page, because it helps if the delivered regional variant differs from the advertised one.

Step 5: Compare phones with a decision table

Use the same checklist for every candidate. The table below is a comparison framework, not a ranking; fill each row from the phone’s India specification sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Check Why it matters Pass condition
n28 / 700 MHz Can support a lower-frequency coverage layer where the operator deploys it. Listed for the exact India model when relevant to your operator.
n78 / 3500 MHz Important capacity band; TRAI’s July 2025 report detected 3500 MHz for Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea. Listed and compatible with the operator you intend to use.
n258 Relevant only where the operator and location use the 26 GHz band. Confirmed if your operator or plan specifically requires it.
4G fallback bands Maintains service outside 5G areas and indoors where 5G is weak. Matches the operator’s published LTE requirements.
India SKU Regional models can have different modems, bands and firmware. Model number and software region are explicitly Indian.
Dual-SIM behavior Two active SIMs can change which slot receives 5G. Manufacturer documents the behavior you need.
Updates Carrier compatibility can depend on firmware. Support policy covers the exact model.
Return policy Maps cannot guarantee indoor service. You can return or exchange the phone if local testing fails.

A phone with fewer total bands can be the better India purchase if it has the bands your operator actually uses, the right regional firmware and dependable 4G fallback. Conversely, a long global band list is not useful if n28 or n78 is missing from the Indian SKU.

What to do when coverage and specifications disagree

The map shows 5G, but the phone lists no matching band

Do not buy on the assumption that software will add missing radio hardware. Choose another India variant or another phone whose specification sheet includes the required band.

The phone supports the band, but the map shows no 5G

Expect 4G at that location unless the operator confirms a recent rollout. Check the map again close to purchase and ask whether the address is inside a planned or newly activated area.

The map shows 5G outdoors, but service is weak indoors

Test the exact room with the same operator, preferably at the times you use the phone. Keep a return option and prioritise 4G reliability. Indoor performance cannot be inferred from outdoor shading alone.

Two SIMs change the result

Read the handset’s dual-SIM notes and test with the intended data SIM in the documented 5G slot. Some phones limit 5G to one SIM or disable certain combinations when both lines are active.

The delivered phone has a different model code

Do not rely on the product name. Photograph the model code, compare it with the saved India specification sheet and request an exchange or refund if the bands differ.

When to recheck before ordering

Perform the map and specification checks as close to purchase as practical. Jio’s map, for example, carried a 10 July 2026 update date; coverage layers, firmware and operator deployment are not static. Recheck after a major move, a new SIM choice or a change in the phone’s regional listing.

Save four items with your order record:

  • The operator map result and date for home, work and commute.
  • The phone’s exact India model number.
  • The NR and LTE band table.
  • The seller’s exchange or return terms.

A practical buying decision

  1. Coverage first: If your home or office has no predicted 5G, buy for strong 4G and treat 5G as a future option.
  2. Bands second: If coverage exists, require the exact India SKU to support the operator’s relevant bands, especially n28 and n78 where applicable.
  3. Indoor reality third: If you work in a basement, high-rise or heavily shielded building, arrange a local test or choose a seller with a usable return policy.
  4. SIM and software fourth: Confirm dual-SIM limits, firmware region and update support before opening the box.
  5. Recheck at checkout: Repeat the map and specification review if the purchase is weeks or months after your original research.

The Bottom Line

Before buying an India 5G phone, search your exact addresses on the intended operator’s current map, interpret the result as approximate outdoor coverage, and match the exact India SKU’s NR bands—particularly n28 and n78—to that operator. Verify 4G fallback, dual-SIM behavior and return terms so a missing band or weak indoor signal does not turn into an expensive surprise.
