Light is converted into electrical energy and stored in the watch’s power cell. Because charging speed, low-charge warnings and reset procedures vary by movement, find the caliber number on the caseback and use the matching Citizen manual.
A second hand that advances in two-second jumps normally means the charge is low. Give the watch a complete recharge for its caliber. If the hand still jumps afterward, follow the exact reset procedure for that movement or contact Citizen service rather than trying a generic reset.

What an Eco-Drive watch needs to charge
Citizen Eco-Drive watches use a light-powered movement. A solar cell beneath the dial turns natural or artificial light into electrical energy, and a rechargeable power cell stores that energy for later use. Citizen describes the system as harnessing “the light all around you, natural or artificial” to power the watch. Read the company’s Eco-Drive technology explanation for the system overview.

The watch must receive light through the dial. A bright source supplies energy faster than a dim source, and the movement’s design determines how much energy it needs. Consequently, a charging time printed for one caliber must not be treated as a universal Eco-Drive specification.

Find the caliber before you do anything else
Turn the watch over and look for the caliber or movement number engraved on the caseback. It may appear beside other case and water-resistance markings. Search that number in Citizen’s support center and open the corresponding manual. The manual is the authority for charging times, power-saving behavior, hand alignment and reset steps.
- Record the complete caliber number, including any letters or suffixes.
- Confirm that the manual matches the watch’s functions. A simple three-hand model and a multifunction chronograph can have different reset procedures.
- Use the model-specific water-resistance and care information rather than assuming that another Eco-Drive model has the same rating.
Citizen’s Watch Care & Instructions support center groups manuals and care guidance. The B620 instructions below illustrate why identifying the caliber matters: its estimates differ from Citizen’s general analog-watch examples.
How to charge an Eco-Drive watch
- Expose the dial. Remove the watch from a drawer, box or covered wrist position and place the dial where light reaches it directly. Natural daylight is generally the fastest source; indoor lighting can work but may require much longer.
- Use the manual’s charging target. Check whether the manual distinguishes time for one day of operation, time to restart a stopped watch and time for a full charge. These are different outcomes and should not be substituted for one another.
- Keep the watch cool. Do not charge a B620 at approximately 60°C/140°F or higher. A sunny windowsill can become hot, so select a location where the dial receives light without the case being heated excessively.
- Allow enough time for the actual light level. Cloud, distance from a lamp, tinted glass and indoor shadows all reduce illuminance. If the watch was stopped, use the manual’s restart estimate first, then continue until the full-charge estimate is reached.
- Check the seconds hand after charging. Normal one-second movement indicates ordinary operation on many analog models. A continuing two-second jump means the low-charge condition remains or the movement needs its specified reset.
Do not place the watch under a high-temperature lamp or use an improvised electrical charger. The approved charging method is simply controlled exposure of the dial to light, with the caliber’s manual setting the time target.
General charging times for basic analog Eco-Drive watches
Citizen publishes the following approximate reference values for basic analog Eco-Drive watches. They are examples from Citizen’s support guidance, not guarantees for every caliber. The fluorescent-light figures assume a lamp at about 3,000 lux and a distance of 8 inches. “One day” means enough energy for approximately one day of operation; “full charge” means the approximate time to fill the power reserve under that light.
| Light source | Approximate illuminance | Charge for one day of use | Approximate time for a full charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunny outdoor light | 100,000 lux | About 2 minutes | About 11 hours |
| Cloudy outdoor light | 10,000 lux | About 12 minutes | About 40 hours |
| Fluorescent light at 8 inches | 3,000 lux | About 40 minutes | About 130 hours |
These figures come from Citizen’s article on a jumping second hand: “The second hand on my eco-drive watch ‘jumps’ instead of ticking every second.” A different dial, hand set, complication or power-cell specification can change the result, so use the table only as a planning reference when your own manual does not provide a number.

B620 charging times: a separate, caliber-specific example
The B620 manual separates three situations: energy gained for one day of operation, the time needed to begin normal operation after discharge, and the time for a full charge. Its numbers are not interchangeable with the general table above.
| Light source | Approximate illuminance | One day of operation | Start normal operation after discharge | Full charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunny outdoor light | 100,000 lux | About 2 minutes | About 50 minutes | About 9 hours |
| Cloudy outdoor light | 10,000 lux | About 10 minutes | About 7 hours | About 60 hours |
| Fluorescent light at 8 inches | 3,000 lux | About 35 minutes | About 25 hours | About 180 hours |
| Interior lighting | 500 lux | About 3.5 hours | About 160 hours | Not stated in the B620 manual |
Read the complete Citizen B620 manual for the movement’s operating instructions. The differences between these values and Citizen’s general analog examples demonstrate why a caliber number is essential.

What a two-second jumping second hand means
On compatible Eco-Drive analog movements, a second hand that moves two seconds at a time is the low-charge warning. It is not the same as an ordinary one-second tick. Charge the watch promptly by exposing the dial to suitable light and continue for the full-charge period specified for the caliber.
For the B620 specifically, Citizen says the watch may stop if it remains in the two-second warning state for eight days or more without charging. That eight-day behavior belongs to the B620 and should not be applied automatically to other movements.
If the hand returns to normal after charging, resume ordinary wear while ensuring that the dial receives light regularly. If it continues jumping after the watch has reached a full charge, use Citizen’s guidance for a recharged watch whose second hand still jumps.

What to do when the hand still jumps after a full charge
Citizen states that a movement may need a reset when the low-charge indication persists after recharging. Reset instructions are movement-specific. Basic two- or three-hand models and multifunction models do not necessarily use the same sequence, and an incorrect sequence can leave hands or functions out of alignment.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Verify that the watch actually received the manual’s full-charge exposure, not merely the shorter “one day” or “start normal operation” time.
- Confirm the caliber number on the caseback and open that exact manual.
- Follow only the reset procedure written for that caliber and function set.
- After resetting, check the time, calendar and any chronograph or alarm indications that the manual tells you to verify.
- If the warning remains, the watch stops again, or the procedure is unclear, contact Citizen service rather than repeating an unrelated model’s reset.
Citizen’s support article explains the distinction between basic and multifunction resets; it does not establish one universal button-and-crown sequence for every Eco-Drive.
How long a fully charged watch can run in darkness
Citizen says an Eco-Drive watch can operate for more than six months in total darkness when fully charged. Select power-save models are stated to run for up to seven years. These are product capability statements, not a promise that every model reaches the same reserve: actual performance depends on the movement, settings and how much charge was stored.
Power-saving features can stop the hands or reduce activity while the watch preserves energy. Consult the caliber manual before interpreting a stationary hand as a failure; some models require a light exposure or a specified control operation to resume normal display.
B620 storage and monthly charging guidance
For the B620, Citizen recommends exposing the watch to direct sunlight for five to six hours at least once a month. The same manual advises avoiding prolonged storage in darkness and notes that frequent coverage by a sleeve can make supplemental charging necessary.

Treat those instructions as B620-specific. For another caliber, follow its own schedule and reserve information. If a watch is worn under long sleeves, stored in a drawer or used mostly indoors, plan periodic dial exposure rather than waiting for the two-second warning.
Light, heat and placement precautions
- Prefer bright light without excessive heat. High illuminance charges faster, but the B620 manual warns against charging at approximately 60°C/140°F or higher.
- Do not infer safety from the word “sunlight.” Direct sun through glass or inside a closed vehicle can heat the case substantially. Move the watch to a cooler location if the case becomes hot.
- Keep the dial unobstructed. A sleeve, storage pouch or face-down placement reduces the light reaching the solar cell.
- Use measured times as estimates. Lux values, lamp distance and weather conditions vary. A cloudy day is not equivalent to direct sun, and ordinary room lighting can require days rather than hours for a full charge.
Water resistance, cleaning and replacement parts
Do not assume that every Eco-Drive has the same water-resistance rating. Citizen says water resistance varies by model. Before exposing the watch to rain, washing, swimming or any other water contact, check the model-specific manual and markings; when the guidance is unclear, ask Citizen service.
Cleaning instructions also depend on the case, crystal, crown and strap. Use the care directions for the exact model instead of applying a universal solvent, brush or immersion method. If the watch has been exposed to water unexpectedly, stop relying on assumptions about its rating and obtain model-specific service advice.
Citizen notes that replacement straps, links and other parts may be available for certain models. Compatibility is model-dependent, so provide the case or caliber information when asking about parts. The Citizen care and instructions center is the appropriate starting point for manuals and service routes.

A practical maintenance routine
Each time you put the watch away
- Leave the dial where it can receive suitable ambient light instead of storing it permanently in darkness.
- Keep it away from conditions that can heat the case to the B620’s approximately 60°C/140°F warning threshold.
- If the watch is under clothing for most of the day, plan supplemental light exposure.
Once a month
- For a B620, provide the direct-sunlight session of five to six hours recommended by Citizen, while avoiding excessive heat.
- For another caliber, use its manual’s charging interval and duration.
- Look at the seconds hand for a two-second warning and respond before the reserve is exhausted.
Whenever the watch behaves abnormally
- Record the movement number and consult the correct manual.
- Separate a low-charge symptom from a function-specific problem: first provide a full recharge, then apply a documented reset if the warning persists.
- Ask Citizen service about water exposure, cleaning, straps, links or other parts when the manual does not resolve the issue.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The watch has stopped
Expose the dial to the light source and use the caliber manual’s “start normal operation” estimate if one is provided. A stopped watch may begin running before it has enough energy for a full reserve, so continue charging for the full-charge duration rather than putting it away as soon as the hands move.

The second hand jumps every two seconds
Interpret this as a low-charge warning on movements that use that indication. Charge for the movement’s full-charge target. The B620 can stop after eight days or more in this warning state without charging, but that timing is not a general Eco-Drive rule.
The second hand still jumps after the stated full charge
Check that the light exposure matched the manual’s assumptions, then follow the exact reset instructions for the caliber. Citizen provides separate guidance for basic and multifunction watches. If the warning remains after the correct reset, arrange service.
The watch gains little energy indoors
Indoor light can be much dimmer than outdoor light. Citizen’s general reference for fluorescent light at 3,000 lux requires about 40 minutes for one day and 130 hours for a full charge; the B620 estimates about 35 minutes and 180 hours at the same stated illuminance. Increase exposure time or use brighter outdoor light while keeping the case cool.
You cannot identify the care or parts requirements
Do not borrow a water-resistance, strap or cleaning assumption from another Citizen model. Use the caseback number to retrieve the manual or contact Citizen support with the model information.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- Eco-Drive charging is light exposure through the dial, not a plug-in process.
- Charging times are movement-specific; distinguish one-day energy, restart time and full-charge time.
- A two-second hand jump normally signals low charge. Recharge fully before attempting any reset.
- Persistent jumping requires the exact caliber’s reset procedure or professional service.
- Reserve, water resistance, cleaning instructions and available parts all vary by model.
