Change quality for the video you are watching
This changes quality for the current video session. It does not automatically change the default used for every other video. That distinction matters if you want one high-detail viewing session on the unfolded screen but prefer to conserve cellular data at other times.

- Tap Settings in the player.

- If YouTube asks you to choose a resolution after selecting an option, choose the resolution you want for this video.
Advanced is not available for every video. If the option is missing, the upload, connection, device support, or current app conditions do not expose a manual resolution choice for that video. The list can also differ between two videos, so do not use one upload as proof of what every video should offer.

What the four quality choices do
| Option | Picture detail | Data and startup behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto | Changes as YouTube responds to viewing conditions. | Balances playback stability and quality instead of locking one resolution. | Everyday viewing when your connection changes or you do not want to adjust videos manually. |
| Higher picture quality | Favors more detail when a suitable stream is available. | Uses more data and can take longer to start or buffer more often. | Wi-Fi viewing, large-screen viewing, or videos where detail matters more than immediate startup. |
| Data saver | Uses lower picture quality. | May start faster and is designed to reduce data use. | Limited cellular plans, weak connections, or situations where uninterrupted playback matters more than sharpness. |
| Advanced | Lets you select a resolution when YouTube offers the control. | Results depend on the available formats, connection, and device support. | Choosing a specific available resolution instead of letting YouTube select automatically. |
YouTube describes Auto as an adaptive setting: the service changes stream quality according to viewing conditions. Those conditions include connection speed, the player and screen size, the quality of the original upload, and browser or device support. A larger unfolded Z Fold screen does not create detail that is absent from the source. If a creator uploaded only a standard-definition version, selecting a higher setting cannot turn it into a true high-definition source.
Why a selected resolution may not hold
A manual choice is a preference for the current playback, not a promise that the stream will remain unchanged in every circumstance. If conditions deteriorate, the app may need to use a different available stream to keep playback going. Conversely, a higher option may not appear until YouTube has identified the formats available for that upload. Give the video a moment to load, then reopen Settings > Quality if you need to check the choices again.
Set separate quality defaults for mobile data and Wi-Fi
Use YouTube’s quality-preferences screen when you want a policy that applies to future videos rather than changing each video individually.

- Tap Settings.
- Tap Video quality preferences.
- Under mobile networks, choose Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, or Advanced.
- Under Wi-Fi, choose a preference separately.
- If YouTube prompts you for a resolution, choose the resolution you want applied when it is available.
The mobile-network and Wi-Fi choices are independent. For example, you can select Data saver for cellular viewing and Higher picture quality for Wi-Fi. A preference is not a guarantee that every video will play at that resolution; YouTube can only use formats supplied by the upload and supported under the current conditions.
A practical default for a Fold
There is no Fold-specific performance ranking among these modes. A sensible starting point is Auto on both networks, then change mobile networks to Data saver if your plan is limited. Choose Higher picture quality on reliable Wi-Fi when you prefer detail on the unfolded display. Use Advanced only when you have a reason to select a particular resolution and the current video exposes that choice.
Think of these defaults as two lanes. The mobile-network lane should favor predictable data use and reliable starts; the Wi-Fi lane can favor detail when the connection is dependable. You can still override either lane for an individual video through its player menu. Changing one video’s quality does not mean you must return to the preferences screen afterward.
Why the unfolded screen does not guarantee a sharper stream
The Z Fold’s larger inner display can make softness easier to notice, but the screen does not alter YouTube’s source file. The maximum useful quality is constrained by several factors:
- Original upload: The creator must provide a higher-resolution version. A standard-definition upload cannot become genuine HD because a menu offers a higher number.
- Connection conditions: YouTube may lower quality when the connection is slow or unstable to keep playback running.
- Player and screen size: YouTube takes the playback environment into account when selecting a stream.
- Device and software support: Available formats can vary with the Android app, device capabilities, and current support.
- Video availability: Advanced may not appear on every upload, and the list of resolutions can differ from one video to another.
Therefore, an absent resolution is not necessarily a fault with the Fold. Check another video before concluding that the phone or app cannot play a particular format. The unfolded display can make compression, a soft upload, or a low stream more apparent, but changing the display mode cannot add information that was never encoded in the video.

Change playback speed
Playback speed is controlled per video through the same player settings menu.
- Open a video in YouTube.
- Tap the video once to show the controls.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Playback speed.
- Select a speed from the list shown by your current YouTube app.
The retrieved Android help does not establish one fixed list or maximum for every current app version, so the safest instruction is to use the values displayed on your Fold rather than expecting a particular range. Android 5.0 or newer is required for different playback speeds for performance reasons. If you do not see the option, confirm that you are using the YouTube Android app and that the app and operating system are supported.
Choose a speed for the task
- For lectures, demonstrations, or unfamiliar accents, start at the normal setting and increase gradually until speech remains easy to understand.
- For a long talk you already understand, a faster setting can reduce viewing time, but pause or slow down when information becomes difficult to follow.
- For language practice, a slower setting can make pronunciation easier to distinguish.
- For music, film scenes, or content where timing is important, normal speed usually preserves the intended rhythm.
Changing speed does not create a new video file and does not change the creator’s upload. It changes how the YouTube player presents that video on your device. Quality and speed are separate controls: increasing speed does not improve resolution, and choosing a higher picture quality does not alter timing.
Seek backward or forward by 10 seconds
YouTube’s Android player provides a quick gesture that is separate from the speed menu.
- Double-tap the left side of the video to rewind 10 seconds.
- Double-tap the right side of the video to fast-forward 10 seconds.
Tap within the video area rather than on a control button. If a single tap only reveals or hides controls, use two quick taps in the left or right half of the player. This gesture is useful when you miss a sentence and want to replay it without opening the settings panel; it is not the same as changing playback speed.
Fix blurry video or buffering
Quality and buffering are related but not identical. A video can look soft because YouTube selected a low stream, because the upload is limited, or because the display is showing a low-quality source. Buffering usually indicates that the selected stream cannot be delivered consistently under current conditions.
Check the current video’s available choices
- With the video playing, tap the player.
- Open Settings, then Quality.
- See whether manual resolutions or Advanced are available.
- If a higher option is listed, select it and watch whether playback remains stable.
If only low choices appear, test another upload. A different video may expose different formats because resolution depends on what the creator uploaded and what YouTube can provide for that video. If a higher choice is available but causes repeated pauses, return to Auto or Data saver rather than assuming the highest number is always the best setting.
Use a less demanding mode when playback stops
If a higher setting repeatedly pauses to buffer, switch that video to Auto or Data saver. Higher picture quality explicitly uses more data and may buffer more often. Data saver lowers picture quality and may start faster. On a changing cellular connection, Auto can let YouTube adjust instead of holding a setting the connection cannot sustain.

When troubleshooting, change one thing at a time. First note the current quality choice, then try Auto, and finally try Data saver if playback still stops. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue is stream demand or the video itself. A single low-resolution upload should not be used to diagnose the phone’s display or network.
Clear the YouTube cache only when broader app trouble persists
Clearing the cache is a troubleshooting step, not a routine quality setting. If videos continue to behave incorrectly across the app, use Android’s system settings:
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose YouTube.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Return to YouTube and replay the video.
Clear cache removes temporary app data. It does not add a resolution that the upload does not contain, and it does not replace the quality preference choices described above. If the problem affects only one upload, changing the cache is unlikely to create a new format for that video; check its Quality menu and compare another upload first.
Do not confuse YouTube controls with Samsung’s video settings
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6 guide describes controls for Samsung Gallery and its own video player. Those controls are separate from YouTube’s in-player Quality menu.
Samsung’s Video brightness option
On the Z Fold6, Samsung documents Settings > Advanced features > Video brightness > Bright. Samsung says this feature is available only in some apps and increases battery use. It changes the phone’s video-display brightness behavior; it does not select a YouTube stream resolution, alter the upload, or replace YouTube’s Settings > Quality menu.
Because the title does not identify a Fold generation, do not assume every Z Fold model has identical Samsung menus. A Samsung Gallery gesture or brightness setting may be absent, renamed, or arranged differently on another generation. When the video is playing inside YouTube, use YouTube’s own controls first. If you are watching a file in Gallery instead, its player controls belong to Samsung and will not change the quality of a YouTube stream.
Which setting should you use?
| Your situation | Recommended starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reliable Wi-Fi and a large unfolded screen | Higher picture quality | Favors detail, with the trade-off of more data and potentially longer startup or more buffering. |
| Limited cellular allowance | Data saver for mobile networks | Reduces picture quality and may start faster. |
| Connection changes while traveling | Auto | Lets YouTube adapt to current viewing conditions. |
| You need a specific resolution and the video offers it | Advanced | Provides manual selection when available. |
| A lecture is too slow or too fast | Playback speed menu | Choose the speed shown in the current app and adjust until comprehension is comfortable. |
| You missed a sentence or moment | Double-tap the left side | Rewinds 10 seconds without opening another menu. |
These are decision guides, not guarantees. The available stream and playback behavior remain dependent on the video, connection, app, and device support. There is no setting that simultaneously guarantees the highest detail, the fastest start, and the lowest data use; each choice trades one of those goals against another.

A quick setup checklist
- Update or open the YouTube Android app on your Fold.
- For one video, use player Settings > Quality.
- For future viewing, use profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences.
- Set mobile networks and Wi-Fi separately rather than assuming one choice covers both.
- Use Playback speed in the player settings when timing needs to change.
- Double-tap the left or right side of the player to seek 10 seconds.
- If quality is low, check the choices for that specific upload before troubleshooting the phone.
- If app-wide playback problems continue, clear YouTube’s cache through Android Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache.
- For Samsung Gallery videos, use Gallery’s controls; do not expect them to appear in YouTube.
What to expect on different Z Fold generations
YouTube’s Android controls are intended to work across supported Android devices, but the exact labels and layout can change with YouTube updates. The instructions here are not a claim that every Fold generation exposes identical menus. The Fold6-specific Samsung brightness path is documented separately and should not be generalized to earlier or later models without checking that model’s software.

Regardless of generation, the central distinction remains the same: YouTube determines stream quality from the upload and viewing conditions, while Samsung’s Gallery player has its own display controls. A larger screen can make compression or a low-resolution upload more visible, but it cannot increase the source resolution. No accessory or special Fold purchase is required to open YouTube’s standard Android quality and playback menus.

Why is my Z Fold video blurry even after I choose a higher quality?
The upload may not contain a higher-resolution version, or YouTube may be responding to connection and device conditions. Reopen the video’s Settings > Quality menu and check the choices. Then compare another upload. A higher menu number cannot turn a standard-definition source into genuine high definition.
Can I force every YouTube video to use one resolution?
You can choose preferences separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi under profile picture > Settings > Video quality preferences, and you can use Advanced when YouTube offers it. However, the preference cannot create formats absent from an upload or unsupported under current conditions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which setting saves the most mobile data?
Data saver is the choice designed to lower picture quality and reduce data use. It may start faster. Auto can also be a practical choice when conditions change, because YouTube adapts the stream instead of holding one manual resolution.
Why does Higher picture quality buffer?
Higher picture quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more often. Try Auto or Data saver for that video, especially on a changing cellular connection. The larger Fold screen does not change the connection capacity needed to deliver a stream.
How do I change speed if the menu is missing?
Tap the video, open Settings, and look for Playback speed. The exact list can vary with the current app. Different playback speeds require Android 5.0 or newer; wording and placement can also change as YouTube updates.
Can I rewind exactly 10 seconds?
Yes. Double-tap the left side of the player to rewind 10 seconds, or double-tap the right side to advance 10 seconds. Perform the gesture in the video area, not on a separate control button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes Samsung’s Video brightness setting improve YouTube resolution?
No. On the Z Fold6, Settings > Advanced features > Video brightness > Bright changes display brightness behavior in some apps and can increase battery use. It does not change YouTube’s stream or replace the in-player Quality menu.
Best Value
- Expansive foldable 7.6″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, offering a tablet-like canvas for multitasking, split-screen productivity, and immersive media — while folding down to a compact form for easy portability.
Should I clear the cache whenever YouTube looks soft?
No. First check the video’s available Quality choices and test another upload. Clear the YouTube cache through Android Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage > Clear cache only when broader app playback trouble persists. Cache clearing cannot add a resolution missing from the video.
Bottom line
Use the playing video’s Settings > Quality menu for an immediate change, and use Video quality preferences to set separate mobile-network and Wi-Fi defaults. Choose Auto for adaptation, Higher picture quality for more detail when conditions allow, Data saver for lower data use, and Advanced only when the video exposes the resolution you need. Playback speed and 10-second double-tap seeking are separate player controls. The Fold’s larger screen may reveal limitations in an upload, but neither YouTube nor Samsung can create source detail that the creator did not provide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Z Fold video blurry even after I choose a higher quality?
The upload may not contain a higher-resolution version, or YouTube may be adapting to connection and device conditions. Check the video’s Settings > Quality menu and compare another upload.
Can I set different YouTube quality defaults for cellular data and Wi-Fi?
Yes. Open your profile picture, tap Settings, then Video quality preferences. Choose a setting separately for mobile networks and Wi-Fi.
What is the best setting for limited mobile data?
Choose Data saver under mobile-network preferences. It lowers picture quality and may start faster. Auto is another option when your connection changes frequently.
How do I change playback speed?
Open the video, tap it, choose Settings, tap Playback speed, and select a value from the list shown by your current YouTube app. Different playback speeds require Android 5.0 or newer.
How do I rewind or fast-forward 10 seconds?
Double-tap the left side of the player to rewind 10 seconds or the right side to fast-forward 10 seconds.

Does Samsung’s Video brightness setting change YouTube quality?
No. Samsung’s Video brightness control affects display brightness in supported apps; YouTube’s stream resolution is controlled in YouTube’s own Settings > Quality menu.
The Bottom Line
For one video, use YouTube’s player Settings > Quality. For ongoing control, set mobile-network and Wi-Fi choices under Video quality preferences. Use Playback speed and double-tap seeking independently, and remember that the Fold’s larger screen cannot add detail missing from the original upload.
