You can change a Netflix plan or payment method from your account in a web browser, while subtitle and audio choices are managed either per profile or while a title is playing. Plan upgrades apply immediately; downgrades begin on the next billing date. Payment options and plan-change eligibility differ when a phone, internet, or other partner bills Netflix.
Choose the setting you actually want to change
Netflix has three separate control areas, and using the wrong one is the most common reason a change appears not to work:

- Membership plan: changes the subscription level, such as video quality, the number of simultaneous streams, and whether advertising is included.
- Payment method: changes the card, virtual card, PayPal account, gift-card balance, or partner billing arrangement used to pay.
- Profile language and in-player subtitles: controls the interface language, preferred audio and subtitle languages, and the language shown for an individual title.
Plan and payment changes are easiest from a browser at the Netflix account page. Profile language controls are available on the web, phone or tablet, and many TVs. The in-player Audio & Subtitles menu is title-specific: it only offers languages that Netflix has for the program you are watching.

Change the plan in a browser
- Sign in to Netflix in a web browser.
- Open the Change Plan page from your account.
- Choose the plan you want.
- Select Continue or Update.
- Select Confirm Change or Confirm.
The exact button label can vary by account and region, but the confirmation screen is the final step. Check the selected plan before confirming, particularly if you are changing from an ad-supported option to an ad-free option or changing the number of permitted simultaneous streams.

When the new plan starts
| Change | Effective date | What you can expect |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade | Immediately | The account can use the higher plan’s features as soon as the change is confirmed. |
| Downgrade | Next billing date | The account keeps the current plan’s features until the billing period ends, then moves to the lower plan. |
Netflix bills monthly on the date you originally signed up. It does not offer annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships. A plan change can alter the billing date when the remaining balance is taken into account, and Netflix may charge a prorated amount. Review the confirmation screen and your next invoice rather than assuming the original calendar date will remain unchanged.
What to compare before selecting a plan
Netflix’s available plans and prices vary by country and can change over time, so there is no universal price table that applies to every account. Use the plan selector shown for your region and compare:
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Monthly price | The amount charged for your region and account. A current universal price is not stated here because Netflix displays region-specific pricing. |
| Simultaneous screens | Determines how many devices can watch at the same time under the plan’s rules. |
| Video quality | Plans can differ in the maximum picture quality available to supported devices and titles. |
| Advertising | Some plans include advertising while others do not; availability depends on the plan offered in your country. |
| Billing route | A directly billed account follows Netflix’s change flow. A partner-billed account may have different eligibility and timing. |
Changing a plan does not change the profile, viewing history, or saved list. It changes the membership terms attached to the account.

Netflix identifies four common reasons the option may not appear:
- The account is on hold.
- The account is paused.
- A Kids profile is currently active.
- A phone, internet, television, or other partner handles billing.
Switch to an adult profile before troubleshooting. If the account is partner-billed, the partner’s account portal or support team may control the change. An account hold or pause must be resolved before a plan can be changed through Netflix.

How to change the card or other Netflix payment method
Edit the existing payment method
- Sign in to your Netflix account.
- Open Manage payment info.
- Select Update beside the current payment method.
- Enter the new card or account details.
- Save the change.
Use this route when the same type of method is staying on the account but a number, expiration date, billing address, or other detail has changed.
Add a replacement or additional method
- Open Manage payment info.
- Select + Add Payment Method.
- Enter the requested details.
- Save the method and follow any verification prompt.
If more than one method is listed, read the labels on the page carefully so you know which one Netflix will use for the next charge. Remove an old method only after the replacement is saved and accepted.
Temporary authorization holds
Adding or updating a card can create a temporary authorization hold. This is a verification amount, not necessarily a completed Netflix charge. Netflix says a bank or card issuer may take a few business days to release it. If the hold remains after that period, ask the bank or issuer whether it is still pending; do not repeatedly submit the same card, because each attempt can create another pending authorization.
When a partner bills your account
If Netflix is included in a phone, internet, television, or other package, Netflix may not be able to edit the payment method. Contact the provider that includes Netflix and change the billing details in that provider’s account system. The provider may also determine when a plan change takes effect or which plans are eligible.
Payment security
Netflix warns that it never asks for payment details by email, text message, or phone. Enter payment information only after signing in to your Netflix account. Do not follow a payment link in an unexpected message, and do not disclose a verification code to someone who contacts you claiming to be support.

Can you pay Netflix with a gift card?
Netflix gift cards can fund the monthly bill. Redeem the gift-card code on the account, and Netflix applies the balance to future monthly charges until it is used. Payment availability is country-dependent, so a gift card purchased for one market may not be usable in another.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because a gift-card balance is consumed by recurring monthly charges, check the remaining balance and the next billing date in the account before assuming the subscription will continue indefinitely. If the balance runs out, the account needs another accepted payment method or may stop billing successfully.
Gift-card availability does not mean every account can use every payment option. Netflix lists credit cards, debit cards, virtual cards, gift cards, PayPal in some regions, and partner billing, but the methods shown on your account are the ones available for your country and billing route.
Change Netflix’s display language for a profile
The display-language setting changes menus, buttons, and other Netflix interface text. It is separate from the subtitle choice for a particular film or episode.
On the web
- Open Account.
- Go to Profiles.
- Choose the profile to edit.
- Open Languages.
- Select a Display Language.
- Select Save.
On a phone or tablet
- Open My Netflix.
- Tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile.
- Tap Display Language.
- Choose the language and save.
On a smart TV or streaming device
- Open the profile-selection screen.
- Choose Edit on the profile.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language and select Done.
This profile-level change affects the Netflix interface wherever that profile is used. It does not guarantee that every title will have audio or subtitles in the same language.

Set preferred audio and subtitle languages for a profile
Profile language preferences tell Netflix which audio and subtitle languages to prioritize. They are not the same as the language menu displayed while a title is playing.
Web steps
- Open Account, then Profiles.
- Choose the profile.
- Open Languages.
- Under Audio and subtitle languages, select your preferred languages.
- Select Save.
Phone and tablet steps
- Open My Netflix and tap the profile name.
- Choose Manage Profiles, then select the profile.
- Open Audio & Subtitles.
- Select the languages you want and save.
These preferences influence what Netflix presents first, but they cannot create a translation that a title does not carry. Language availability can differ between seasons and episodes, and SDH (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing) may be available for one episode but not another.

Phones, tablets, and computers
- Start the film or episode.
- Tap or click the screen to show playback controls.
- Open Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose an audio track and subtitle language from the list, or select Other to see additional choices.
Smart TVs and streaming devices
- Start playback.
- Press the up or down arrow on the remote to open the playback options.
- Select Audio & Subtitles.
- Choose the desired tracks and close the menu.
Apple TV
During playback, swipe up or press the up arrow to open the audio and subtitle controls, then select the available language.
The in-player list is authoritative for that title and device. If a language is absent, changing the profile preference cannot add it. Downloaded titles generally show only the two most relevant languages, so a language available during streaming may not appear for the downloaded copy.
Subtitles can still appear for dialogue spoken in a language other than the title’s original language even when the general subtitle setting is off. That behavior is part of the title’s presentation and is not necessarily a profile error.

Why Netflix keeps resetting subtitle or audio language
Check whether you changed the profile or only one title
A selection made in the player is a viewing choice for the current title. A selection under the profile’s Languages settings is the account-level preference Netflix uses when possible. If you want the same preference to be offered across future titles, set it in the profile as well as selecting it in the player.
Check the profile type
Netflix says subtitle and audio preferences generally persist, but they are not saved for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile. Preferences are saved when a title is watched from a Kids profile. This difference can make the setting appear to reset even though the service is following the profile’s rules.
Use the audio-language workaround
If audio repeatedly returns to another language, Netflix recommends playing a Teens-or-above title for two to three minutes. Stop after that short period, then try the title again. This can establish the preferred audio language for future viewing. It is specifically a Netflix recommendation for recurring audio resets, not a guarantee that every title will offer that language.
Allow for title and episode differences
- A movie may offer different audio or subtitle tracks from a series.
- One season or episode may have SDH while another does not.
- Downloaded playback may show fewer language choices than streaming.
- Some foreign-language dialogue may remain subtitled even when subtitles are turned off.
Compare the list shown in Audio & Subtitles for the exact episode, rather than judging the setting by another title.
Quick Recap
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the scope. Decide whether you are changing the membership, billing method, profile language, or the current title’s tracks.
- Use the correct account area. Membership and payment changes belong in the account pages; subtitles for the current program belong in the player.
- Check billing ownership. If a partner supplies Netflix, make the payment change with that partner and expect different plan rules.
- Check the active profile. Leave a Kids profile before looking for Change Plan, and remember that Kids viewing affects whether language preferences persist.
- Verify title availability. Open Audio & Subtitles on the exact episode or movie. Missing languages are usually a catalog or title limitation, not a broken preference.
- Wait for normal processing. A downgrade waits for the next billing date, and a card authorization hold can take a few business days to clear.
- Review the result. Confirm the plan shown in the account, the saved payment method, or the profile’s saved language settings before closing the page.
What to remember
- Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades begin on the next billing date.
- Netflix bills monthly on the sign-up date and does not sell annual, multi-month, or lifetime memberships.
- Use Manage payment info for direct-billed accounts; contact the billing partner for a bundled subscription.
- Gift cards can pay the monthly bill, but available payment methods depend on country.
- Display language and profile audio/subtitle preferences are different from the in-player controls for a specific title.
- Language tracks, SDH, and downloaded-language choices vary by title, season, episode, and device.
