Updating your name on Aadhaar does not automatically change the name in your bank’s records. Once the updated name appears on Aadhaar, submit a separate name-change request through your bank’s official channel, with the identity and name-change evidence that bank requires. The steps below apply to India; forms, accepted documents, online options and processing times vary by bank.
Steps to update your bank account name
- Check your updated Aadhaar. Confirm the new name is correct and save a current e-Aadhaar or other proof the bank accepts. UIDAI says e-Aadhaar can be downloaded after it is generated and that Aadhaar formats are valid. See UIDAI’s Aadhaar update guidance.
- Find your bank’s official process. Check its website or app, contact official customer service, or ask a branch for the account/customer name-change procedure. Ask whether online verification is available, what evidence it accepts, whether originals or self-attested copies are needed, whether its own form is required, and whether the update covers all your accounts. RBI KYC directions do not set one universal name-change form or submission channel; see the RBI Master Direction on KYC.
- Prepare the documents the bank specifies. The bank may ask for its request form, updated Aadhaar and legal evidence connecting the former and new names. The right supporting evidence depends on how the name changed. UIDAI’s document rules include Gazette notification and prior-name proof for certain first or full name changes; marriage-related and other cases have their own provisions. Check UIDAI’s supporting-document regulations and list, and confirm the bank’s current requirements. Do not assume that one document, such as an affidavit or marriage certificate, is sufficient in every case.
- Submit the request and keep its acknowledgement. Save a copy of what you submitted and the bank’s acknowledgement or service-request number. Banks set their own tracking methods. For an Aadhaar update submitted at an enrolment centre, UIDAI provides an acknowledgement with a URN that can be used to track that Aadhaar request; it is separate from the bank request.
- Check the bank’s records after processing. Verify the name in the bank’s official app, website or other channel. If you have multiple accounts or linked services, ask whether each was updated; do not assume a request changes every record automatically.
Can you change the name online, or do you need a branch visit?
That depends on your bank. Some banks may provide an online route, while others may require a branch submission or additional verification. Confirm the accepted documents, identity checks, whether originals are required, coverage across accounts and how to track the request before choosing a route.

HDFC Bank’s published routes
HDFC Bank says customers can request an account-name change online through InstaServices using Aadhaar e-KYC and Video KYC, or submit a completed application and documents at a branch. It says the online request is usually completed within two working days after successful verification. HDFC also says the new name should first be updated with UIDAI or the relevant PAN authority. These are HDFC’s instructions and estimate, not a timeline or process that applies to other banks. See HDFC Bank’s name-change service page.

Changing your Aadhaar name is a separate process
UIDAI’s public guidance directs demographic updates such as a name change to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre; its online update service description focuses on address and document updates. Follow UIDAI’s current instructions for the Aadhaar record itself, then make a separate request to your bank.

UIDAI says a name may be updated twice with valid supporting documentation. Requests beyond that ordinary limit need exception handling. Its published guidance directs people seeking an update beyond the limit to contact UIDAI at 1947 or the help address listed in its guidance, with the relevant enrolment/update details and supporting documents. A bank-record update does not change benefit-payment mapping
Your bank’s customer records and the Aadhaar Payments Bridge/NPCI mapper used for some benefit payments are separate matters. A name change in the bank’s records does not, by itself, establish that the mapped destination account has changed. UIDAI’s compliance checklist says mapper requests require the customer’s explicit, informed consent and customer notification.
