Most Facebook privacy controls are grouped under Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. From there, you can review profile details, who can find or contact you, post and story audiences, public content, tagging, and blocking. Use Facebook’s current interface as the final authority: labels and available controls can differ between the desktop site, mobile app, mobile browser, profile type, and account.
Privacy settings answer different questions. A post’s audience controls who can see that post; discoverability controls whether people can find or be suggested your profile; Activity Log and Access your information let you inspect what you have done and what data Facebook holds. Review each area separately rather than assuming one setting protects everything.

Start with Audience and visibility
Facebook’s Help Center identifies Audience and visibility as the main location for privacy controls. To open it:
- Open your profile menu. On the website this is usually your profile picture; in the app, look for the menu or your profile picture.
- Select Settings & privacy.
- Select Settings.
- Open Audience and visibility.
The wording or position can change as Facebook updates its app and website. If you do not see an item exactly as written, use the closest current label in Settings or search Facebook’s Help Center. The current overview is “View and adjust your privacy settings”.

| Area | What it governs |
|---|---|
| Profile details | Who can see information displayed on your profile. |
| How people find and contact you | Discovery and contact-related choices, including profile suggestions based on an email address or phone number. |
| Posts and stories | The audience for the content you share. |
| Pages and reels | Available audience or visibility controls for those types of content. |
| Followers and public content | Who can follow you and how public-content interactions are exposed. |
| Profile and tagging | Profile posting and tagging-related review controls. |
| Blocking | Accounts, Pages or other entities you have blocked. |
Some options are unavailable or named differently for particular profile types. Treat the live settings screen, not an older screenshot or printed guide, as the source of truth.
“How do I control who can see what I share on Facebook?”
Choose an audience whenever Facebook presents an audience selector before you publish. The selector may show choices such as these:
| Audience | Meaning | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Public | The content is public information and can be visible beyond your friends. | You intentionally want anyone who can access the content to see it. |
| Friends | The share is limited to the friends audience selected in Facebook’s control. | The post is intended for your Facebook friends rather than a general audience. |
| Only me | The share is restricted to you. | You need a private record or are checking how a post works before sharing more widely. |
Other audience choices can appear depending on the post type, profile, or account. Read the selector immediately before selecting Post; do not infer the audience from a previous share. Facebook’s help guidance says an audience can be chosen before sharing an individual post or other share.
Use Privacy Checkup as a guided review
Privacy Checkup walks through important sharing and visibility choices. Open it from Facebook’s privacy or settings area when it is offered, then read each screen instead of accepting every existing choice automatically. It is useful for spotting a public audience you intended to limit, an old discoverability choice, or profile information visible to more people than expected. Facebook describes Privacy Checkup in its guidance on data scraping and protecting information.
A profile-level choice does not retroactively turn every copy of information into private information. In particular, selecting a restricted audience for a new post does not make content that was separately shared as public private. Check the audience attached to each important share.
Separate post audiences from profile discoverability
Two settings are often confused:
- Post audience: who can see a specific post, story, reel, or other share.
- Discoverability: whether people can find, be suggested, or contact your profile through information such as an email address or phone number.
Go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you to review the discoverability controls that Facebook makes available to your account. Facebook’s help material specifically identifies profile suggestions based on an email address or phone number and visibility of basic profile information as separate choices. Changing these options does not change the audience of a post you already made.

Review profile details
In the profile-details area, inspect each item individually. Consider whether the audience you select matches the purpose of the information: a public professional detail, a friends-only personal detail, or a detail visible only to you. The available audience choices can vary by field and profile type, so read the audience label shown next to each item rather than assuming all fields use the same setting.
Check contact and suggestion settings
Review who can find or contact you and whether Facebook can use an email address or phone number to suggest your profile. These controls affect how your account is surfaced to other people; they are not a substitute for selecting an audience when you publish.
Review the other controls in Audience and visibility
Posts and stories
Use the posts and stories sections to examine the default or available audiences Facebook presents for those formats. Before an individual share, confirm the audience selector again. Stories can have their own visibility behavior, so do not assume a choice made for a feed post automatically applies to a story.
Followers and public content
This section covers follower and public-content choices. Facebook states that content selected as Public is public information. If you do not want a share treated as public information, choose a narrower audience in the selector before publishing. Public-content settings and the audience of an individual post are related but not identical: one describes how public content and followers are handled, while the other identifies who can see a particular share.
Profile and tagging
Inspect profile and tagging controls if you want to manage how tagged material or activity connected with your profile is handled. Read each available review or visibility option in the current interface. A tagging-related setting concerns the connection to your profile; it does not necessarily remove a copy of the same content from the person who originally posted it.

Pages and reels
Pages and reels can appear as separate categories. Open them when you publish or manage that content and verify the audience shown for the specific item. Availability depends on the account and profile type, so use the controls Facebook actually displays for you.

Blocking
Open Blocking to review accounts or other entities you have blocked and to manage that list. Blocking is a separate control from limiting a post audience: it changes interaction with the blocked account, while an audience selector determines who can view a share.
Inspect the data Facebook associates with your account
Privacy settings control visibility, but they are not the same as reviewing the information Facebook stores about your activity. Facebook’s Access your information tools, including the relevant information area in Accounts Center, provide categories for examining account data. The categories Facebook lists include:
| Category | Examples of what to look for |
|---|---|
| Activity | Your activity and interactions on Facebook. |
| Personal information | Account and profile information. |
| Connections | Connections associated with your account. |
| Logged information | Information recorded about activity and use. |
| Security and login | Security and sign-in related records. |
| Off-Facebook apps and websites | Connections to apps and websites outside Facebook. |
| Preferences | Choices that shape your Facebook experience. |
| Ads | Advertising-related information and preferences. |
Facebook’s account-information guidance is available in “Access or download information about your activity in Facebook groups”. The title refers to groups, but the guidance describes the broader information-access and download tools. Facebook can let you request all available categories or select particular categories and date ranges. It also offers transfer to another service. The exact screens and labels may vary by device and account.

If you only need to investigate one issue, select the relevant categories and date range rather than requesting everything. A full export can be much larger and harder to review. If you need a complete record, select all categories and follow Facebook’s current export instructions. Keep downloaded files protected because they may contain personal information, account history, connections, and security-related records.
Understand what a data export is not
Downloading information gives you a copy to inspect or transfer; it does not itself change the audience of posts, delete activity, or block another account. Use the privacy, Activity Log, or other management control for the change you actually want.
Use Activity Log to review and manage activity
Activity Log is the practical place to review and manage activity associated with your Facebook account. Facebook’s current guidance is “Manage what you’ve shared on Facebook”.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Activity Log is an index of activity, not a guarantee that every copy of content exists only there. Facebook notes that stories shown in Activity Log may also appear in Feed, Search, or friends’ News Feeds. Hiding or managing an entry in the log therefore should not be described as removing every copy or appearance of the content. Check the original post, the relevant audience, and other people’s copies when that distinction matters.

Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. To change the audience for the friends list displayed on your own profile:
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings & privacy.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Audience and visibility.
- Choose How people find and contact you.
- Open Who can see your friends list? and select the audience Facebook offers, then save if prompted.
The detailed Facebook guidance is “Adjust who can see your Friends section on Facebook”. This setting affects the list shown on your profile. It cannot control what another person reveals from their own profile. A friend’s settings can still expose a friendship elsewhere, including through mutual friends. Treat the friends-list choice as one visibility layer, not a guarantee that no relationship can be inferred.
Investigate activity from businesses and organizations outside Meta
Facebook identifies a tool for viewing or clearing activity from businesses and organizations visited off Meta. It is referenced through Access your information or the relevant Accounts Center information area. This is a separate issue from the audience of a Facebook post and from your Activity Log.
Facebook’s available help reference confirms that the view-and-clear option exists, but the exact current step-by-step route and the precise consequences of clearing were not established in the available guidance. Do not assume that clearing it deletes the outside organization’s records, removes every related account connection, or changes a Facebook post’s audience. Open the current information screen, read the explanation Facebook supplies there, and only confirm a clearing action when you understand the effect shown for your account.

A practical order for a complete privacy review
If you want to review the account without overlooking a major category, work through the controls in this order:
- Profile details: check the audience next to each important field.
- Discoverability: review how people can find or contact you, including email- and phone-based suggestions.
- Sharing: confirm the audience before each important post, story, reel, or other share.
- Public content: verify whether follower and public-content choices match your intentions.
- Profile and tagging: inspect controls related to tagged material and activity connected to your profile.
- Friends section: set the audience for the list displayed on your profile, while remembering that friends control their own profiles.
- Blocking: review the blocked list separately from audience settings.
- Activity Log: inspect current and older activity, remembering that log management may not remove other copies or appearances.
- Access your information: inspect categories, request a selected or full download when needed, or use transfer if that is your goal.
- Off-Meta activity: review the view-and-clear tool and read its current explanation before taking action.
This sequence separates visibility decisions from data inspection. It also helps diagnose a common mistake: changing who can see a post will not change who can discover your profile, and exporting information will not change either one.
When a setting is missing or seems ineffective
The label is different
Facebook changes interface labels and placement across desktop, app, mobile browser, and account types. Start from the profile menu and look under Settings & privacy, Settings, and Audience and visibility. If a category is absent, it may not be available for that profile type or may have moved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A post is still visible
Check the audience attached to the specific post or share. Then consider whether another person copied, reshared, or separately posted the information. A profile setting cannot control another person’s disclosure.
A friendship is still discoverable
Recheck your Friends-section audience, then remember that the other person’s profile and mutual-friend visibility can reveal the relationship independently.
An Activity Log change did not remove everything
Activity Log records and manages activity, but Facebook notes that stories can also appear in Feed, Search, or friends’ News Feeds. Inspect the original content and its audience rather than treating the log as the only copy.
You are unsure what clearing off-Meta activity will do
Pause at the confirmation screen and read Facebook’s current explanation. The available guidance confirms a view-and-clear tool but does not establish one universal consequence for every account, business, or organization.
