How to Change Your Email Password and Sign Out of All Devices

Change the password with the service that owns your email address, then separately review its device sessions and connected apps. Those are not always the same action: a password change is not a guaranteed sign-out-everywhere, and the steps differ for Google, Yahoo, Apple, Microsoft and work accounts.

Before you start: identify the account behind your email

Your email app may not control your password. For example, Outlook for Android and iOS is a client: after you change the underlying account password, Outlook prompts you to enter the latest one. The password itself may belong to Google, Yahoo, Apple, Microsoft, your employer, or another mail provider.

Use the provider’s official app or website directly. If you can’t sign in, use that provider’s account-recovery process rather than a link in an unsolicited email or text. Yahoo directs users who have forgotten a password to its Sign-in Helper; recovery options depend on the email provider and account type.

Change your password and revoke access by provider

Gmail and Google Accounts

  1. Open Gmail and select Manage your Google Account.
  2. Open Security, then select Manage all devices.
  3. Select a device or session you no longer trust and choose Sign out. Review the list and repeat for every relevant session.

Google notes that a device can have multiple sessions, so signing out once may not remove every session associated with it: “To ensure there’s no account access from a device, you must sign out of all sessions on that device individually.” Follow the current Gmail sign-out guidance. Removing a Google account from the Gmail app on a phone or tablet is a separate, local device action.

Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Accounts

To change a known password on the web, open Yahoo Account security, choose Password under “Ways of signing in,” enter the new password and continue. In supported Yahoo mobile apps, the path is profile icon → Manage Accounts (in Yahoo Mail) → Account Info or Account → Security → Change password. If the app path does not work, try a mobile browser. Account Key may affect whether the password option appears. See Yahoo’s password-change and recovery instructions.

For device access, open Yahoo Account security, review current sign-ins, select an unfamiliar or unwanted device and sign it out. This is separate from external app access: under External connections, delete an app password to revoke that app’s access. Yahoo explains both controls in its unusual-activity guidance.

Outlook, Microsoft 365 and work email

Changing a saved password in Outlook is not necessarily changing the account password. Microsoft says Outlook mobile prompts for the latest password after a change. For Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live, use the Microsoft account’s own password controls; for a Microsoft 365 work or school account, self-service reset works only if the organization allows it. Otherwise, contact your IT team. For on-premises Exchange, Microsoft also directs users to IT; for IMAP mail, consult the provider that hosts the account. See Microsoft’s password-update guidance.

There is no single sign-out procedure established here that applies to every personal Microsoft account, Microsoft 365 organization, on-premises Exchange server and IMAP provider. Use the account or organization’s official security page and support channel to find session-revocation controls.

Apple Account and iCloud Mail

Apple’s password instructions apply to the Apple Account, not to iCloud Mail as a separate universal sign-out rule. When changing the password on a trusted device, Apple says that people signed in on multiple devices may be offered a choice: Remove Other Devices, which requires those devices to sign in again, or Keep All Devices Signed In. A security delay may apply in some cases. See Apple’s Apple Account password instructions.

After changing the password, check the other ways into the account

Work through these checks in the provider’s account-security settings. Their availability and names vary by provider.

  • Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
  • Review recent sign-ins and device sessions. Sign out devices or sessions you do not recognize, and check for more than one session on the same device where the provider lists them separately.
  • Check recovery details. Confirm recovery email addresses and phone numbers belong to you; remove unfamiliar entries. Yahoo recommends keeping these contact details current and secure.
  • Review connected apps and app passwords. Remove unfamiliar connections. In Yahoo, deleting an app password removes that external app’s access; a password change alone is not a substitute for checking this list.
  • Enable an additional sign-in factor. Yahoo recommends two-step verification and a strong password unique to the account. A password manager is one optional way to help manage unique passwords; no paid product is required for these account-setting steps.

If this email address is used to reset passwords for other accounts, securing those accounts is also sensible general practice. Yahoo’s security guidance says, “Yahoo never asks for your password in emails or phone calls.” See Yahoo’s account-security recommendations.

What signing out everywhere can—and cannot—guarantee

“Sign out of all devices” can involve different controls: browser or device sessions, app passwords, connected apps, and organization-managed access are not interchangeable. Google explicitly requires reviewing sessions individually; Yahoo separates device sign-ins from app-password access. The cited provider instructions do not establish a universal revocation timeline for every app, token, mail client or managed device. Follow the account owner’s current controls and verify that unfamiliar access has been removed from each relevant list.
