How to Change Your Default Browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android

Change the browser your device opens for web links in the operating system’s default-app settings. On Windows, use Settings > Apps > Default apps; on a Mac, use Default web browser in System Settings or System Preferences; on iPhone, use Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App; and on Android, use Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app. The browser normally must already be installed, and iPhone requires an app that supports becoming the default.

What changing the default browser actually does

Your default browser is the app the operating system uses when another app, document, message, or system feature sends a web link to the browser. Selecting a new default does not uninstall the previous browser, delete bookmarks, change your accounts, or automatically move saved passwords. It changes the operating system’s routing choice for links.

Browser choice and search-engine choice are separate. You can make one app the default browser and still use any search engine that the browser offers. Changing the search engine inside a browser will not change which app opens links elsewhere on the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you start

  • Install the browser you want to use and open it once so its setup can finish.
  • Update the browser if its own settings do not show a default-browser option. This is particularly important on iPhone.
  • Keep your device connected to power if an operating-system or browser update is pending; a restart may be required before the new setting appears.
  • Decide whether you want every web link handled by the new browser or only certain file and link types. Windows gives you both choices; the other platforms generally provide a single browser-app selection.

Requirements, downloads, and cost

Changing the setting itself does not require a cable, adapter, special hardware, repair tool, or physical purchase. You need an installed browser app that is compatible with the device and available to the current user profile. Download or update the app first, complete its first-run setup, and then return to the operating-system control. On iPhone, installation alone is not enough: the app developer must support Apple’s default-browser capability.

If the browser is installed under a different Windows user, is incompatible with the Mac’s macOS version or processor, or is unavailable to an Android work profile, it may not appear in the selector. Those are availability issues, not evidence that the operating system’s default setting is broken.

Windows 11 and Windows 10

Windows 10 and Windows 11 place browser selection in the same general area. You can set a browser as the default for its supported web protocols and file types, or inspect each association individually when one kind of link keeps opening in another app.

Set one browser as the Windows default

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu or press Windows key + I.
  2. Select Apps, then Default apps.
  3. Use the search box to find the browser you want, then select its name.
  4. Select the control that sets the browser as default. In current Windows screens this appears as Set default.
  5. Close Settings and test a link from an email or another app. If Windows asks which app to use, choose the browser and select the option to always use it when that option is offered.

For example, selecting Microsoft Edge in Default apps exposes its Set default control. The same settings area is used for other installed browsers.

Assign only particular file or link types

Windows can assign defaults by app, file extension, or link type. On the browser’s page under Settings > Apps > Default apps, review the entries for web protocols such as HTTP and HTTPS and for web document extensions such as HTML. Select an entry to choose a different installed app. This is useful when ordinary web links open in your chosen browser but a saved HTML file, a special protocol, or a link from a particular program does not.

Setting the browser at the app level is the quickest way to handle normal links. Individual associations can then be adjusted without changing every other browser-related assignment. For example, you might find that HTTPS opens in the new browser while an HTML file remains associated with another app; change that specific entry rather than repeatedly reinstalling browsers.

When Windows still opens another browser

  • Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and select the browser again. Check both the app-level default and the individual HTTP, HTTPS, and HTML associations.
  • Look for a prompt in the application that launched the link. Some mail, chat, or document applications have their own setting for opening links internally or externally.
  • Confirm that the browser is installed for the current Windows user and has not been removed, repaired, or reset since you selected it.
  • Restart Windows after a major browser or system update, then test a link from a different application to determine whether the problem is system-wide or limited to one program.

Mac

The menu path depends on the macOS generation. Ventura 13 and later use System Settings; earlier releases use System Preferences. Install the browser before opening the setting, because only available browser apps appear in the selector.

macOS Ventura 13 or later

  1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
  2. Select System Settings.
  3. Choose Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
  4. Scroll to Default web browser.
  5. Open the browser menu and select the installed browser you want to use.
  6. Close System Settings and open a link from Mail, Messages, Notes, or another application to verify the change.

Earlier macOS versions

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2. Select General.
  3. Open the Default web browser menu.
  4. Select the browser you want, then close System Preferences.

If the Mac selector does not show your browser

  • Install the macOS version of the browser rather than an installer intended for another platform.
  • Launch the browser once, finish any first-run prompts, and reopen the Default web browser menu.
  • Check whether the browser supports your Mac’s macOS version and processor. An incompatible app may install incompletely or fail to register as a browser.
  • If links from only one application ignore the system choice, inspect that application’s own link-opening preference.

Ventura’s System Settings and older versions’ System Preferences are different applications, so searching for the older General panel on a Ventura Mac will not find the control. Conversely, an older Mac will not have the Ventura Desktop & Dock path. Identify the macOS generation first, then use the matching route.

iPhone

On current iPhone software, browser selection is in the Default Apps area. The browser must support Apple’s default-browser capability; an installed app that does not support it cannot be selected. Apple’s current instructions use iOS 26 labels, while the capability has been available to supported browsers since iOS 14.

Choose a browser in iPhone Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Default Apps.
  4. Tap Browser App.
  5. Select the browser you want to use.

Open a link from another app to verify the result. The first link after a change may display a confirmation or handoff prompt; follow the on-screen choice and select the browser you just configured.

Use the browser’s own shortcut

Some browsers provide a direct route to the same iPhone setting. In Chrome, open More, choose Settings, select Default Browser, tap Go to Settings, and choose Chrome under Default Browser App. Other browsers use different wording, so the iPhone Settings path is the reliable fallback.

When Browser App is missing or unavailable

  • Update the browser from the App Store. Chrome’s default-browser selection requires iOS 14 or later; an outdated browser build can hide the option.
  • Update iOS if the phone is running an older release that does not provide the current Default Apps menu.
  • Check that the app is a full browser and explicitly supports becoming the default. Not every app that displays web pages qualifies.
  • Restart the iPhone after updating, then revisit Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App.

Regional browser-choice screens

Apple documents additional browser-choice screens for certain situations in regions including the European Union and Japan. Their appearance depends on the device, software version, account or location conditions, and the stated regional rules. Do not assume that every iPhone will show the same screen. If no choice screen appears, use the Default Apps path instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android

Most Android phones use a Default apps menu, but manufacturers can rename menus, move them, or add another settings layer. The browser must be installed and available to the current user profile.

Standard Android path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap Default apps. Some phones label this Choose default apps.
  4. Tap Browser app.
  5. Select the browser you want to handle web links.
  6. Open a link from another app to confirm that Android uses the new selection.

Finding the setting on a customized phone

If the labels differ, open Settings and use its search field for default apps, browser app, or opening links. Look under Apps, App management, or a similarly named section. The exact wording and order can vary by manufacturer and Android software release, but the control is still an app-default setting rather than a browser webpage setting.

When Android keeps using the old browser

  • Return to the Browser app selector and verify the new browser is visibly selected.
  • Open the old browser’s app-info page and review any setting for opening supported links. Some Android versions let you clear that app’s defaults.
  • Check whether the link is being opened inside another app’s built-in viewer. A built-in viewer may not follow the system browser selection until you choose an external-browser option.
  • If a work profile, parental-control profile, or managed device controls the phone, an administrator may restrict which browser can be used.

Android’s Browser app choice applies to links routed through the system. A manufacturer’s built-in viewer, a work profile, or an app that deliberately handles its own links can make the result look inconsistent even when the system selection is correct.

Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android compared

Platform Main path What can be customized Important qualification
Windows 10 and 11 Settings > Apps > Default apps Browser app plus individual file-type and link-type associations Review HTTP, HTTPS, HTML, or another association when only one kind of link behaves differently
macOS Ventura 13 or later Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser System-wide default web browser The browser must be installed and compatible with the Mac
Earlier macOS Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Default web browser System-wide default web browser Older menu names are different from Ventura and later
iPhone Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App Supported browser app The selected app must support Apple’s default-browser feature; regional choice screens are not universal
Android Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app Installed browser app Manufacturers can rename or relocate the controls

Choosing which browser to make default

The operating system does not require you to choose the browser that came with the device. A practical choice depends on how you use your devices rather than on a universal speed or security ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Device compatibility: Confirm that the browser supports the operating-system version on every device where you expect to use it.
  • Sync: If you want bookmarks, tabs, passwords, or history available on multiple devices, check whether the browser offers sync for those devices and whether you are comfortable signing in.
  • Privacy controls: Review the browser’s tracking, cookie, permissions, and data-retention controls. The default setting itself does not make a browser more private.
  • Accessibility: Check keyboard navigation, text scaling, screen-reader behavior, contrast options, captions, and zoom features that matter to you.
  • Existing setup: An already installed browser is quicker to select, but installing another browser can be worthwhile if it better matches your workflow.

Default browser versus default search engine

These settings answer different questions. The default browser decides which application opens a web link. The search-engine setting decides which service handles a search typed into that browser’s address bar or search box.

For example, selecting a different browser in Android’s Browser app menu will not change the search engine used inside Chrome. To change that search engine, open the browser’s own settings and look for a Search engine section. On other platforms, use the equivalent control inside the browser you selected.

How to test the change properly

  1. Open a plain web link from an app that normally hands links to the operating system, such as an email or notes app.
  2. Confirm the address opens in the browser you selected, not merely in an in-app preview.
  3. Test a second application. If one app behaves differently, its internal link setting is likely involved.
  4. On Windows, test an HTTP link, an HTTPS link, and an HTML file if you need those associations to be consistent.
  5. On a phone, lock and unlock the device or restart it if an update was installed before testing.

Restoring the previous browser

To switch back, follow the same platform path and select the earlier browser. Windows may require you to restore several individual file or link associations if you changed them separately. On macOS, iPhone, and Android, selecting another browser in the main browser control normally replaces the previous system-wide choice. Reinstalling or deleting a browser can also cause the operating system to fall back to another available app, so set an explicit replacement rather than relying on automatic fallback.

What to do when menu names change

Operating-system updates can rename settings or move them. Start with the Settings search field and use terms such as default browser, default apps, or browser app. Then look for the platform’s browser-default control under Apps or the general desktop dock settings. The labels in this article match the documented Windows 10/11, macOS Ventura 13-or-later, earlier macOS, current iPhone, and common Android paths; a future release or manufacturer skin may present an equivalent screen under a different name.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Do not confuse a browser’s home page or search engine with the operating system’s default-browser setting.
  • Do not assume that installing an app automatically makes it the default; select it explicitly in the platform settings.
  • Do not judge the setting from an in-app preview alone. Test a link that the operating system actually routes.
  • Do not expect Windows’ per-file and per-link controls on platforms that expose only one Browser app selector.
  • Do not assume an iPhone regional choice screen will appear for every location or account.
  • Do not delete the old browser just to change the default. Removing it can trigger fallback behavior and does not transfer its data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will changing the default browser uninstall my old browser?

No. It changes which app receives links. The previous browser, its bookmarks, accounts, and saved data remain unless you remove them separately.

Can I make only HTTP or HTTPS links use a different browser on Windows?

Yes. Open the browser under Settings > Apps > Default apps and review the individual HTTP, HTTPS, HTML, or other listed associations. Windows supports defaults by app, file type, and link type.

Why does one Windows program still open links in another browser?

That program may open links internally or have its own external-browser preference. Check its settings, then compare its behavior with a link opened from a different application.

Which Mac path should I use?

Use Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser on macOS Ventura 13 or later. Earlier macOS versions use Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Default web browser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I select a browser on iPhone?

Update the browser and iOS, then return to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App. The app must support Apple’s default-browser capability, and Chrome’s control requires iOS 14 or later.

Does every iPhone show a browser-choice screen?

No. Apple documents additional choice screens for certain situations, including regions such as the European Union and Japan. Availability depends on the device, software, account, location, and applicable rules; use Default Apps when no screen appears.

Why are Android menu names different from the steps?

Phone manufacturers customize Android. Search Settings for default apps, browser app, or opening links, and look under Apps or App management for the equivalent Browser app selector.

Does changing the default browser change my search engine?

No. Browser selection controls which application opens links. Search-engine selection is a separate setting inside the browser, such as its Search engine section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I confirm that the new default works?

Open a link from an email, notes, or another app that hands links to the operating system. Confirm it opens in the selected browser, then test a second app. On Windows, test HTTP, HTTPS, and HTML associations if needed.

Do I need to buy hardware or a special tool to change the default browser?

No. Use the operating system’s settings and an installed, compatible browser app. No cable, adapter, repair tool, or physical media is required.

The Bottom Line

Install the browser you want, then choose it in your platform’s default-app control: Windows uses Settings > Apps > Default apps; Ventura and later Mac uses System Settings > Desktop & Dock; iPhone uses Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App; and Android uses Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app. Test links afterward, and check per-link associations or app-specific viewers if one program still behaves differently.
