How to Change Xbox Privacy Settings to Allow Multiplayer and Cross-Network Play

To enable online multiplayer on Xbox, set You can join multiplayer games to Allow. If the game connects you with players outside Xbox services, also set You can join cross-network play to Allow. On a console, open Settings > General > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy. On a PC, use Microsoft’s privacy-settings page at aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings. A parent or family organizer may need to make the change for a child account, and the game itself must support cross-network play.

What you need to change

Xbox treats online multiplayer and cross-network play as separate account privileges. Turning on one does not automatically turn on the other. The first permission controls whether the account can join online multiplayer sessions with real-world players. The second is needed when a session includes people who are not signed in to Xbox services.

These settings control the Xbox account privilege only. They do not add cross-play to a game that was designed for one network, and they do not remove a game’s own account, subscription, device, or platform requirements.

You can join multiplayer games Online multiplayer sessions with real-world users. Whenever the player needs to join an online game. Local multiplayer on the same device, or every other account privilege.
You can join cross-network play Sessions with real-world players who are not signed in to Xbox services. When a supported game connects Xbox players with people on another network or service. Whether a particular game offers cross-network play.

Microsoft describes these privileges in its client-side Xbox services user-privileges documentation and in XR-045: Xbox network and Account Privileges.

Change the settings on an Xbox console

Use the profile that is unable to join multiplayer, or have the account’s parent or family organizer sign in if the profile is a child account.

  1. Open Settings. From the Xbox home screen, open the Settings app.
  2. Open the online-safety controls. Select General, then Online safety & family.
  3. Open privacy controls. Choose Privacy & online safety, then select Xbox privacy.
  4. Choose the affected profile. If Xbox asks who is changing the settings, select the account that needs multiplayer access. A family organizer may have to authenticate instead for a child profile.
  5. Allow online multiplayer. Find You can join multiplayer games and set it to Allow.
  6. Allow cross-network play when required. Find You can join cross-network play and set it to Allow.
  7. Leave communication controls as intended. Voice, text, and invitation permissions are separate. Change them only if the player also needs different communication access.

After changing the permissions, return to the game and try the multiplayer action again. If the game was open while the account setting changed, closing and reopening the title can make it recheck the account privileges.

Change the settings from a PC or browser

Microsoft provides the Xbox privacy-settings page at aka.ms/XboxPrivSettings. Sign in with the account that controls the affected Xbox profile. For a child account, the parent or guardian or another family organizer may need to sign in instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Xbox privacy settings page.
  2. Sign in with the controlling Microsoft account.
  3. Locate You can join multiplayer games and select Allow.
  4. If the game uses players outside Xbox services, locate You can join cross-network play and select Allow.
  5. Review the communication permissions separately. Do not assume that allowing multiplayer changes voice, text, or invitation access.
  6. Return to the console or PC game and retry the multiplayer or cross-network action.

If the page displays settings for a different family member, switch to the profile that is actually receiving the blocked-privilege message. Changing the organizer’s own permissions will not necessarily change a child’s permissions.

Child accounts and family controls

Child-account permissions can come from age-based defaults or choices made by a family organizer. As a result, a child may not be able to change the multiplayer setting from the child profile itself. Microsoft’s account-privilege guidance explains that family controls can block a privilege even when the game is otherwise configured for online play.

A parent or guardian should sign in to the account-management page or the console’s family privacy flow, select the child profile, and set the required permission to Allow. Minecraft’s parental-controls guidance also directs parents to Xbox account settings when changing a child’s multiplayer permission; see Minecraft Parental Controls.

When a game-specific approval is available

Some title-level approval flows can authorize a specific activity for a specific game. That approval is narrower than changing the account’s general multiplayer privilege. If the child can play one approved title but not another, check whether the family setting or approval applies only to the named game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a setting may change back or remain unavailable

An age-based default, a family organizer’s policy, or another family restriction can continue to apply. If the child profile cannot edit the control, use the organizer account rather than repeatedly changing the child account. The organizer should also verify that the change was made for the correct profile.

Understand multiplayer versus cross-network play

Online multiplayer

You can join multiplayer games is the permission for online sessions with real-world users. It concerns networked play, not multiplayer performed locally on the same console or device. A game can therefore permit local co-op while the account is still blocked from joining an online session.

Cross-network play

You can join cross-network play concerns sessions with real-world players who are not signed in to Xbox services. This is the Xbox-side permission relevant to many cross-platform or cross-service sessions.

Allowing the permission does not guarantee that a particular title will connect to another platform. The game must implement and support cross-network play, and its own account or platform rules may still apply. If a title does not offer cross-network play, changing the Xbox permission cannot create that feature.

Communication is a separate decision

Voice chat, text chat, and invitations have their own permissions. A player can be allowed to join a multiplayer match while communication remains restricted to certain people or disabled. This separation is useful for family accounts: multiplayer access can be enabled without automatically granting unrestricted communication.

Check the game’s requirements before troubleshooting Xbox privacy

Xbox privacy is only one input into an online-play privilege check. Microsoft identifies several other possible inputs:

  • Subscription entitlements required by the particular game or service.
  • Device and client-platform entitlements.
  • Parental-control or family restrictions.
  • Moderator restrictions.
  • Additional privileges checked by the title itself.

These requirements vary by game and service. Do not assume that every game requires the same subscription, or that an allowed privacy toggle proves the account has every entitlement. Check the title’s own requirements and the account’s family settings when the privacy permissions are already allowed.

Troubleshoot when multiplayer is still blocked

Both permissions are not set correctly

Reopen Xbox privacy and check both relevant controls. Multiplayer requires You can join multiplayer games. A cross-network session may require both that setting and You can join cross-network play. Setting only the second permission does not replace the first.

The game does not support cross-network play

If Xbox multiplayer works with Xbox users but a session with people on another service does not, verify that the title actually supports cross-network play. The account permission is necessary only for the Xbox-side privilege; the game determines whether the feature exists and which platforms are included.

The wrong account was changed

Confirm that the Microsoft account whose profile is playing the game is the account whose privacy settings you edited. On a shared console, another family member’s profile can be signed in even though the organizer changed settings for their own account.

A child or family restriction remains active

Have the parent, guardian, or family organizer review the child profile’s permissions. Age-based defaults and organizer choices can restrict multiplayer even after a child attempts to change the setting. If a title-specific approval was granted, check whether it applies to the game being launched.

An entitlement or platform check is failing

If the correct account has both permissions set to Allow, check the game’s own online-play requirements, the device and client platform, and any subscription entitlement it identifies. Microsoft’s privilege model allows these checks to be evaluated separately from privacy controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A moderator restriction is involved

Microsoft also lists moderator restrictions as a possible privilege input. If the game or service reports an account restriction rather than a family-setting warning, changing the privacy toggle may not remove it. Follow the notice attached to the affected account or service.

Communication works differently from gameplay

If the player can join a match but cannot hear, speak to, message, or invite other players, inspect the communication permissions rather than changing the multiplayer permission again. Those controls are intentionally separate.

Use these settings for common situations

Situation Permission to check Additional condition
The player cannot join any online match with real-world users. You can join multiplayer games The game may also require its own entitlement or platform check.
The player can play with Xbox users but cannot join players outside Xbox services. You can join cross-network play, as well as the multiplayer permission. The title must support cross-network play.
The player can join matches but cannot use voice or text chat. Communication permissions. Changing multiplayer access alone will not change chat rules.
A child profile cannot edit the setting. The parent, guardian, or family organizer changes the child profile’s permission. Age-based defaults or a title-specific approval may apply.
The setting is allowed but the game still blocks online play. Verify both relevant privacy permissions. Check subscription, device, client-platform, parental-control, moderator, and game-specific requirements.

Privacy choices to make deliberately

Allowing multiplayer and allowing cross-network play expands where the account can participate, but it does not require changing every privacy control. Keep voice, text, and invitation permissions at the level appropriate for the player. For a child account, a parent can allow the required game activity while retaining narrower communication controls when those are the family’s preference.

Remember that the two play permissions answer different questions: whether the account may join online multiplayer at all, and whether it may join sessions that include people outside Xbox services. Configure only the permission the game’s mode requires.

When to contact the game or Xbox support

Escalate after confirming the correct profile, the two relevant permissions, and any family-organizer approval. Contact the game’s support channel when the title’s cross-network implementation or its own entitlement is unclear. Use Xbox or Microsoft account support when the privacy page cannot be edited by the authorized organizer, a family restriction is inconsistent with the organizer’s settings, or the account reports a service-level or moderator restriction.

When reporting the issue, include the affected account type (adult or child), the exact permission values, whether the problem affects Xbox-only multiplayer or cross-network play, and the game’s own error message. That separates an Xbox privacy problem from a title-specific or entitlement problem.
