To let a child play an anime-styled game on Xbox, check that game’s actual rating and content descriptors first, then choose either a broader age setting or an exception for that one title. In the Xbox Family Settings app, open the child’s profile under Your Family, choose Content Restrictions, keep Filter Inappropriate Content on, and set Allow Content Suitable for Age to the required level. The app can also allow or block individual games regardless of their rating. On the console, use Settings > Privacy and online safety > select a family member > Content restrictions. “Anime” describes visual style, not an age category, so never estimate suitability from the art style alone.
Check the game’s real rating before changing anything
Anime is an art and storytelling style. It does not tell you whether a game is suitable for a particular age. Anime games can carry different ratings because their content, language, violence, themes, or other descriptors differ. The useful information is the rating attached to the exact title your child wants to play.

Find the game in the Xbox Store or in the Entertainment Software Rating Board’s (ESRB) game-ratings search. Read both parts of the listing:

- The content descriptors, which explain why the game received that rating.
Descriptors provide context that an age category alone cannot. When the word Mild appears before a descriptor, the ESRB ratings guide says it indicates lower frequency, intensity, or severity than the unqualified form of that descriptor. Use that wording to discuss the specific content with your child rather than treating all games with a similar visual style as equivalent.

The ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide explains that the age filter blocks potentially inappropriate games using ESRB rating information. That means the game’s listed rating, not its anime appearance or country of origin, should drive your decision.
Option 1: Change the child’s setting in the Xbox Family Settings app
The app is the most precise route when you want to manage a child’s profile from a phone rather than navigate the console. The labels below follow the ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls instructions; wording can change slightly as the app is updated.
Raise the permitted age for games and other content
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select the child under Your Family.
- Select Content Restrictions.
- Make sure Filter Inappropriate Content is turned on. This keeps the age-based filter active instead of removing the control entirely.
- Select Allow Content Suitable for Age.
- Set the permitted age that matches the level you have decided is appropriate after reviewing the game’s rating and descriptors.
This is a general rule for the child’s account. It allows content at or below the selected age threshold, rather than granting access only to the anime game you inspected. Because the setting is an account-level content rule, review what else could become available at that same threshold before saving it.

The ESRB guide says the Family Settings app can allow or block individual game titles irrespective of their age rating. Use this when you have evaluated one game and want to make a title-specific decision while preserving the child’s existing limit for other games.
- In the Xbox Family Settings app, select the child under Your Family.
- Open Content Restrictions.
- Find the control for individual game titles.
- Locate the exact game and choose the option to allow it. If a title was previously permitted and you want to reverse the decision, use the same area to block it.
- Save the change, then have the child sign in to the account that is subject to the family settings and try the game again.
Check the title carefully before approving it. Similar names, editions, or add-ons can appear separately, and approving one listing is not evidence that every related item has the same rating or content.

When the app’s individual-title control is the better choice
Use an individual exception when the child’s current age limit is otherwise appropriate and you have made a deliberate decision about one game. It avoids changing access to every game, movie, television program, and music item covered by the broader setting. Keep a note of why you approved the title so you can revisit the decision if the game receives a new edition or your family rules change.
Option 2: Change content restrictions on the Xbox console
If you are using the console itself, the ESRB guide gives this route:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy and online safety.
- Select the relevant family member.
- Open Content restrictions.
- Choose the age level or restriction you want to apply.
These controls use an age scale based on ESRB and other content-rating systems. The console setting is broader than games alone: the ESRB guide says it applies across games, movies, TV, and music. Therefore, raising the console age level to admit one game can also affect the child’s access to other types of entertainment.
Menu names can vary by console software version. If a label is not identical to the wording above, look for the family member’s privacy, safety, or content-restriction page rather than changing unrelated account settings. The important distinction is that you are editing the selected child’s content restrictions, not a web-search filter or an adult account’s preferences.
Use the console route for a general rule, then review the result
The console path is appropriate when you intentionally want a new age threshold across the child’s supported content. Before confirming, compare the threshold with the exact rating shown for the game. After saving, sign in with the child’s account and test the title. If the game remains unavailable, do not assume that raising the age setting solves every access condition; account, store, regional, or sign-in requirements may still apply.

Choose between a broad age change and a single-title exception
Both approaches are valid, but they solve different problems. Use the following comparison before making the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Decision | What changes | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raise the permitted age | Games and other content at or below the selected age threshold become available under the child’s profile. | You want a lasting, general rule that matches the child’s current maturity and your household policy. | The change is broader than one game and can affect movies, TV, and music as well as games. |
| Allow one individual title | The selected game is allowed or blocked independently of its normal age rating. | You have reviewed one title and want to preserve the existing limit for everything else. | The exception is title-specific; it does not establish that related games or other content are suitable. |
The game’s rating and descriptors should be part of either decision. If the rating is within the child’s existing limit, first check that the correct child profile is being used and that the game is not being launched from a different account. If the rating is above the limit, decide whether a one-title exception is acceptable or whether the broader age rule genuinely reflects your family’s policy.
What the rating descriptors tell you
An age category is a starting point, not a complete description. Read every descriptor attached to the exact listing. The descriptor wording identifies the type of material that influenced the rating, while qualifiers such as Mild communicate lower frequency, intensity, or severity.
Use a simple review process:
- Write down the exact game title and edition shown in the Xbox Store.
- Check that title in the ESRB ratings search or the store listing.
- Record the rating category and each descriptor.
- Discuss the descriptors in terms your child understands, including which topics your household allows or does not allow.
- Choose the narrowest Xbox control that matches that decision.
Do not infer a rating from screenshots, an anime character design, a publisher’s marketing language, or the game’s country of origin. Those details do not replace the formal rating and descriptors.
Keep web filtering separate from game-age restrictions
Xbox has more than one type of family safety control. Microsoft’s Xbox One guidance for filtering inappropriate websites and searches concerns web browsing and search results. It is a separate control from the game-age setting described in the ESRB guide.

If a child can search for a game website but cannot launch the installed game, a web filter is not the setting to change. Conversely, changing the game-age limit will not by itself configure website or search filtering. Manage each control for the activity it is designed to govern.
After you change the setting: a verification checklist
- Confirm the profile: Make sure you changed the child’s profile under Your Family or selected the same family member on the console.
- Confirm the title: Check the exact game listing, including its edition, rather than relying on a shortened name.
- Confirm the scope: Decide whether you intentionally changed a general age threshold or approved one title.
- Confirm the account in use: Test while signed in to the child’s account, not an adult account that may have different permissions.
- Review other requirements: If access is still denied, remember that the cited parental-control guidance does not establish that a title exception overrides account, store, regional, or sign-in requirements.
- Recheck the descriptors: If your family’s decision changes, return to the same content-restriction page and adjust or remove the exception.
Common situations and the safest response
The child says an anime game is blocked, but you have not checked its rating
Do not raise the age setting immediately. Look up the exact title, read its rating and descriptors, and then decide whether the current limit is appropriate. The visual style alone is not evidence that the block is incorrect.
The game is above the child’s normal age limit
You have two choices supported by the Xbox controls: keep the general limit and use the Family Settings app’s individual-title control after reviewing the game, or raise the general permitted age if that broader change reflects your household rule. The first approach limits the change to one selected title; the second affects all covered content at that threshold.
You approved the game but it still will not start
First verify that the exception was applied to the exact child profile and exact title. Then test with the child’s sign-in. If those checks are correct, investigate other account, store, regional, or sign-in conditions rather than repeatedly raising the age limit. The available parental-control instructions do not promise that a title exception bypasses those separate requirements.
You changed the age level and now more content is available than intended
Return to the child’s Content Restrictions page and choose a narrower setting. If the goal was only to allow one game, use the individual-title control instead of a broad age increase. Remember that the broader console setting can cover movies, TV, and music as well as games.

A practical decision worksheet for parents and guardians
Use these questions in order before saving a change:
- What is the exact title? Record the full store name and edition.
- What rating and descriptors are shown? Use the Xbox Store or ESRB listing, not the art style.
- What is the child’s current permitted age? Check the profile’s existing content restriction.
- Is the request for one title or a new family rule? One title points to an individual exception; a new rule points to the age setting.
- Could the broader change affect other media? The console content setting covers games, movies, TV, and music.
- What will you verify afterward? Plan to test the exact title while signed in to the child’s account.
This process keeps the decision tied to evidence about the game and makes the scope of the permission explicit. It also gives you a clear rollback path: remove the individual allowance or restore the previous age threshold if the result is not what you intended.
What these controls do not establish
Xbox family settings help enforce an age-based rule or a parent-approved title decision. They do not turn an anime label into a rating, and they do not provide a substitute for reading the game’s descriptors. The available guidance also does not establish that allowing a title overrides every other condition that can affect access, such as account, store, regional, or sign-in requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
For the narrow question of allowing an anime game, the reliable sequence is therefore: identify the exact title, read its formal rating information, choose a broad age rule or an individual exception, and verify the result on the child’s account.
