The correct steps depend on which World of Warcraft client you use. Retail, Classic variants and World of Warcraft: Forever do not necessarily expose the same controls.
For ordinary graphics changes, open Main Menu > Options > Graphics. For the rendering API specifically, Blizzard documents Main Menu > Options > Graphics > Advanced > Graphics API. Use Edit Mode for the HUD, not for character models. Character appearance is handled during character creation or through character services, while the documented SD/HD player-model switch is tied to World of Warcraft: Forever, not universally to retail or every Classic client.

First identify what you want to change
The phrase “character model” is often used for unrelated settings. Choosing the wrong menu can leave the character looking exactly the same because the setting you changed affects a different layer of the game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| What you want | What actually changes | Where to look | Edition or availability | Paid service? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sharper or faster rendering | Lighting, effects, texture and other graphics-quality output | Main Menu > Options > Graphics | Graphics page is present in WoW clients, but labels and options can vary by edition and patch | No |
| DirectX graphics API | The software interface used to render the game | Main Menu > Options > Graphics > Advanced > Graphics API | Blizzard’s documented route; verify labels in your current client | No |
| HUD placement | Frames, action bars, bags, maps and other interface components | Edit Mode | Introduced with the Dragonflight interface redesign; current labels can differ | No |
| Character appearance | Creation and customization choices that define the character’s look | Character-creation or an applicable character service | Options depend on the client and the character service available to that account | A race change is a paid service |
| SD/HD player model | The model asset used for supported player characters | The exact current menu path is not established in the announcement | Blizzard announced the control for World of Warcraft: Forever; it is not evidence of a universal retail or Classic toggle | No purchase is identified |
| Camera field of view | How much of the scene the camera shows, not the character mesh | An indexed Dragonflight route places it under Options > System > Graphics | Older accessibility documentation; confirm the current client’s labels | No |
If your goal is to make an old-looking model look sharper, start with the Graphics page. If your goal is to use a different version of a player model, first confirm that you are playing World of Warcraft: Forever and that the feature is present in your build.

Change general WoW graphics quality
Graphics-quality controls affect how the game renders the scene. They do not change your character’s race, facial features or the underlying model definition.
- Enter the character or world with the client whose settings you want to change.
- Open the Main Menu.
- Select Options, then Graphics.
- Review the quality controls shown by that edition and patch. Change only the setting you are trying to diagnose, then apply or confirm the change using the control displayed by the client.
- Return to the game and inspect the character in a consistent location and lighting. A scene can look different because of lighting or camera position even when the model itself has not changed.
Blizzard’s supplied documentation does not provide a universal list of slider names, a guaranteed restart requirement, or a measured frame-rate gain for each setting. Do not assume that a particular preset will produce the same result on every retail, Classic or Forever build. If the client requests a restart after a change, follow that prompt; the published material does not establish that every graphics adjustment requires one.
How to tell a quality change from a model change
- A quality change alters the way surfaces, shadows, effects or the scene are drawn.
- A model change replaces or selects a character asset, so the silhouette, proportions or distinctive geometry can differ.
- Moving an action bar or portrait changes neither rendering quality nor the character asset.
- Changing the camera field of view changes framing. It can make a character occupy less of the screen without changing the character.
Change the Graphics API
The Graphics API is a separate setting from quality presets and from character customization. Blizzard Support documents this exact route:

- Open Main Menu > Options > Graphics.
- Open the Advanced section.
- Locate Graphics API.
- Select the API exposed by your client, then confirm the change. The available choices depend on the game build and operating system.
Blizzard also describes changing the API with Battle.net additional command-line arguments. In the launcher’s game settings, enable the field for additional command-line arguments and enter one of these flags:
-d3d11to request Direct3D 11-d3d12to request Direct3D 12
Use the flag only when you understand that it changes the rendering API, not the race, appearance or model asset. Remove the argument if you want the in-game setting to control the choice again. The support material does not promise a performance improvement from either flag, so judge the result on your own system rather than expecting a particular FPS change.
If Graphics API is missing
- Check that you are looking under Graphics > Advanced, not under Edit Mode or character customization.
- Confirm that the launcher is starting the intended WoW edition. A setting documented for one client is not automatically present in another.
- Look for an updated menu label after a patch. Blizzard’s support page is the authority for the documented route, but the visible interface can change.
- If you used a launcher argument, remove it and reopen the game before testing the in-game selector.
Use Edit Mode to change the HUD, not the character model
Blizzard’s Dragonflight HUD and UI redesign introduced Edit Mode for moving and personalizing interface components. It is the right tool when “model” really means a unit frame, portrait, action bar or other on-screen element.

- Select the component you want to move or personalize.
- Drag it to the desired position and adjust the options offered for that component.
- Save the layout when finished.
- Use the available copy or share controls if you want to transfer the layout to another character or account configuration.
Edit Mode changes the presentation of the HUD. It cannot switch a human model to another race, replace a druid form, or select an SD or HD character asset. If your character looks unchanged after moving a frame, that is the expected result.
Change character appearance without confusing it with graphics settings
Character creation is where Blizzard’s character-creation UI documentation places appearance choices. These choices define the character’s look; they are not rendering-quality controls.
When creating a character
Use the appearance controls shown in the character-creation screen for the selected race and class. The available choices are client-specific, so do not assume that an option shown in a Shadowlands-era description is still labelled identically in your current build. A character-creation redesign can change the arrangement of controls without changing the distinction between appearance and graphics quality.

When changing an existing character
Do not buy a race change merely to improve graphics. Blizzard’s Race Change Information and Restrictions article describes race change as a paid service for changing a character’s race; it does not establish race change as a graphics-setting requirement, and it is not a faction-change instruction. Before purchasing a service, confirm that the change you want is actually a race or appearance change rather than a rendering or HUD problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the SD/HD model control only where it is supported
Blizzard announced an SD/HD toggle for player characters in World of Warcraft: Forever, with the announcement focused on original WoW races. That establishes a version-specific feature concept; it does not establish an equivalent switch in retail WoW or every Classic client.
What the announcement does and does not tell you
- The control concerns the player-character model asset, rather than the Graphics API, HUD or camera.
- The announcement does not provide a current in-game menu path. Do not publish a guessed sequence of menus as if it were official.
- Availability can depend on the current Forever build and on which race is supported.
- The announcement said SD Skyborne player characters and SD Druid forms were in development for early 2027. That is a planned update, not a guarantee that the content is available before its release or that the scope cannot change.
A safe way to look for it
- Verify that the launcher is running World of Warcraft: Forever, not retail or another Classic client.
- Update to the build you intend to play.
- Inspect the character, appearance or graphics menus for an SD/HD option supplied by that build.
- If no such control appears, do not substitute the Graphics API selector or a race-change service. The absence may mean that your edition, race or build does not support the feature.
Because Blizzard’s announcement does not document the current menu path, the in-game label is the reliable guide for your installed build.
Best Value
Adjust camera field of view when the problem is framing
A field-of-view setting changes how much of the world the camera displays. It can make a character appear smaller or larger on screen, but it does not alter the character’s model geometry.
An indexed Blizzard accessibility result from the Dragonflight era places the control under Options > System > Graphics. The page was not available for verification and the route comes from an earlier version, so treat those labels as a starting point rather than a guaranteed current path. Open the current client’s System and Graphics pages and use the field-of-view control if it is present.
Troubleshoot the most common mix-ups
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The character looks the same after changing a graphics preset | You changed rendering quality, not the model asset | Inspect the character in the same light and camera position, then identify whether you actually need an appearance or SD/HD control |
| The HUD moved but the character did not | Edit Mode only changes interface components | Leave Edit Mode and use the appropriate appearance or supported model option |
| You cannot find an SD/HD switch | The control is tied to Forever and may be unavailable for your edition, race or build | Verify the client and current build; do not assume retail or another Classic client has the same feature |
| You are considering Race Change for sharper graphics | Race Change changes race through a paid service, not rendering quality | Return to Options > Graphics or Graphics > Advanced and identify the actual graphics problem |
| The Graphics API selector is absent | The menu labels or available controls differ by client, or a launcher argument is controlling the choice | Check Graphics > Advanced, inspect Battle.net additional arguments, and verify the selected edition |
| The character seems too small or too large on screen | Camera framing or field of view may be responsible | Check the current System and Graphics menus for a field-of-view control; this does not change the model |
A reliable decision process
- Name the desired outcome. “More detail,” “different race,” “old versus updated model,” “moved portrait” and “wider camera view” are separate requests.
- Confirm the edition. Write down whether you are in retail WoW, a Classic client or World of Warcraft: Forever.
- Use the narrowest matching menu. Graphics for rendering, Graphics > Advanced for the API, Edit Mode for the HUD, character creation or a character service for appearance, and the supported Forever control for SD/HD models.
- Change one thing at a time. This makes it possible to tell whether the visible result came from a graphics, camera, HUD or model setting.
- Check the current client rather than relying on an old path. Blizzard’s Dragonflight HUD and field-of-view references describe earlier interface versions, and the Forever announcement does not supply a menu path.
- Do not infer performance numbers. The available official material supplies no named FPS gain, quality percentage or benchmark for these controls.
What you do not need to buy
The described changes are software settings and services inside the game or launcher. No physical product is required to open the menus, change the Graphics API, use Edit Mode or inspect a supported model control. A graphics card or monitor can affect your overall display experience, but neither is a prerequisite for using these settings.

Bottom line
Start with the goal, then use the matching control: Options > Graphics for rendering, Graphics > Advanced > Graphics API for DirectX selection, Edit Mode for the HUD, and character-creation or paid character services for appearance. The only documented SD/HD player-model switch in the supplied Blizzard material belongs to World of Warcraft: Forever; its menu path and availability in other clients are not established.
