If a USB device keeps disconnecting, stops working after sleep, or becomes unresponsive while your PC is idle, check USB selective suspend in the active Windows power plan. The setting is in Control Panel, not the modern Settings power-mode picker. Open Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings, expand USB settings, then USB selective suspend setting. Test the relevant On battery or Plugged in value, changing only one state at first.

Selective suspend is enabled by default. Microsoft strongly recommends leaving it enabled because it lets Windows reduce power to an idle USB device or port while the computer remains on. Disabling it is best treated as a temporary, reversible troubleshooting test—not a guaranteed fix.

What Windows USB power management actually controls

USB selective suspend allows a hub to suspend an individual idle USB device or port without suspending every device attached to the computer. Microsoft describes it as the ability to “power down and later resume an idle USB device while the computer to which it is attached remains in the working state (S0).” The PC can continue running while a keyboard, mouse, storage device, audio interface, phone, or another peripheral is placed in a lower-power state.

That behavior is different from shutting down a USB controller or turning off the whole computer. Other ports can continue working, and Windows can resume the suspended device when activity is required. The purpose is power management, particularly on battery-powered laptops, rather than performance tuning.

Microsoft says selective suspend is enabled by default and strongly recommends not disabling it. Turning it off can increase USB power use, and a legacy Microsoft support article warns that disabling the feature affects all USB host-controller drivers and can leave connected USB devices using power. There is no established consumer battery-savings percentage or failure-rate figure that can be applied to every PC.

Before you change anything

Make the smallest change that can answer your troubleshooting question. A USB problem can come from the device, cable, port, hub, driver, sleep transition, or the power state itself. Changing a global power-plan setting before identifying the pattern makes it harder to tell what helped.

  • Write down the affected device, the port you used, whether it is connected through a hub or dock, and whether the PC was on battery or AC power.
  • Record the exact symptom: repeated disconnects during use, failure after the computer wakes, a device that disappears after idle, or a device that never appears.
  • Use the same device, port, workload, and power state for your comparison test.
  • If the issue began after sleep or hibernate, first try disconnecting and reconnecting the device or restarting the PC. That can restore a device without changing a power policy.
  • Keep the original setting in writing or take a screenshot so you can restore it.

The USB selective-suspend control may be hidden or unavailable on some Windows PCs. Its presence is not guaranteed on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation, and menu wording can vary by build and manufacturer.

Change USB selective suspend for the active power plan

This changes the USB behavior associated with the currently selected Windows power plan. It is the broadest user-facing USB power setting described for this problem, so change only the power state that reproduces the failure first.

  1. Open Control Panel. Search for “Control Panel” from the Start menu and open the desktop Control Panel app.
  2. Open Power Options. If Control Panel is in Category view, choose System and Security > Power Options. In icon view, select Power Options.
  3. Identify the active plan. The selected plan is the one Windows is using now. Select Change plan settings beside that plan.
  4. Open the advanced settings. Select Change advanced power settings. A Power Options dialog opens with expandable categories.
  5. Expand the USB controls. Expand USB settings, then expand USB selective suspend setting.
  6. Choose the applicable state. Set On battery or Plugged in to the available value. If the failure happens only when unplugged, change On battery first. If it happens only on AC power, change Plugged in first.
  7. Apply the change. Select Apply, then OK. Close the remaining Power Options windows.
  8. Repeat the original test. Use the same device, port, workload, and power state that triggered the problem. Do not change several USB or sleep settings at the same time.

The route above is surfaced in Microsoft Community Hub guidance rather than a current formal Microsoft Support procedure. If USB settings or USB selective suspend setting does not appear, do not assume that a registry edit is required. The control can be unavailable on a particular PC or power-plan configuration; use the computer or device maker’s documentation for that Windows build instead.

Which value should you select?

For normal use, leave the setting enabled. For a controlled troubleshooting test, select the disabled value only in the state connected to the symptom. For example, if a USB audio interface disconnects only while the laptop is running on battery, test the battery value first and leave the plugged-in value unchanged.

Windows may show the choices as Enabled and Disabled, or with similar wording depending on the build. The important distinction is whether selective suspend is allowed in that power state, not the capitalization of the label.

Test the change so the result means something

A power-setting change is useful only if the comparison is repeatable. Create a simple before-and-after test rather than relying on a single successful connection.

Test factor Keep constant What to record
Device Use the same model and, if possible, the same unit. Whether it disconnects, freezes, or resumes normally.
Port and connection Use the same physical port and the same hub, dock, or adapter. Whether the symptom appears only through one connection path.
Power state Compare battery with battery, or AC with AC. Whether the failure is limited to On battery or Plugged in.
Workload and idle time Repeat the same activity and wait the same amount of time before waking or using the device. How quickly the failure occurs and whether the device resumes.
Sleep transition Use the same sleep or hibernate action when that is part of the problem. Whether reconnecting or restarting is required.

If disabling selective suspend makes no difference after a repeatable test, restore the original value. If it helps only in one power state, keep the other state at its original setting and investigate the device, port, hub, or sleep transition separately.

Use a device-level power checkbox when Windows exposes one

Some devices have a separate Power Management tab in their Properties dialog. The checkbox may read Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. This is a device-specific control, not the same thing as changing USB selective suspend for an entire power plan.

  1. Open Device Manager from the Start menu or Windows search.
  2. Expand the category that contains the affected device, such as Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or another device class.
  3. Open the device’s Properties.
  4. If a Power Management tab is present, read the available options and note their original state.
  5. For a controlled test, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, select OK, and repeat the same symptom test.
  6. If the tab or checkbox is absent, do not force it through an unrelated registry change. Restore any test change that did not help and consult the PC or device manufacturer.

Microsoft currently uses this checkbox as a Bluetooth troubleshooting step, but Windows does not expose it for every device. The wording and available tabs depend on the device driver and hardware.

Do not apply the legacy USB workaround universally

Microsoft also documents a similar device or USB Root Hub power-management workaround for a resume problem in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. That guidance is legacy. It should not be presented as a universal fix for Windows 10 or Windows 11 USB disconnects, and the same checkbox may not appear on a current system.

Power-plan setting versus device checkbox

Use the scope of the setting to decide which test is appropriate.

Setting Scope When it exists Power impact Best use
USB selective suspend in Advanced Power Options Applies to USB behavior for the active power plan and selected power state. May be hidden or unavailable on some PCs. Disabling can increase USB power use across connected USB devices and host-controller drivers. Testing a symptom that changes between battery and AC power or appears after idle.
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power Targets one device whose Properties dialog exposes the option. Not present for every device or driver. Impact is device-specific and not established as a universal USB result. Testing a problem that is clearly tied to one device, especially when its Power Management tab is available.

Neither option guarantees a repair. A setting that affects many devices should be changed only when the broader scope is acceptable. A device-level option is more targeted, but its absence is normal and does not indicate that Windows is malfunctioning.

What to do when a USB device keeps disconnecting

Disconnects while the PC remains awake

Note whether the failure follows idle time or occurs during active use. If it follows inactivity and only occurs on battery or only on AC power, test selective suspend in that one state. Keep the other state enabled while you compare results. If the failure is unchanged, restore the setting and test the same device on another port or without the hub or dock; those observations help separate a power-policy symptom from a connection-path problem.

USB stops working after sleep or hibernate

First disconnect and reconnect the device. If it remains unavailable, restart the PC and repeat the wake test. If the issue is reproducible, test the relevant selective-suspend state without changing the sleep mode itself. A successful reconnect or restart does not prove that selective suspend was the cause; it only identifies a recovery path.

Only one device is affected

Check whether that device’s Properties page has a Power Management tab. If it does, test the device-level checkbox rather than immediately changing a plan-wide setting. If it does not, use the plan-level test only for the power state in which the device fails, and follow the device maker’s guidance when Windows offers no matching control.

Several USB devices fail together

A simultaneous failure points to a broader connection, hub, controller, sleep, or power-plan event rather than a single peripheral. A plan-level selective-suspend test is the relevant scope, but disabling it can affect all USB host-controller drivers and connected devices. Compare behavior carefully and restore the original value if there is no clear improvement.

Why disabling selective suspend can cost power

Selective suspend exists so an idle USB device can use less power while Windows stays in its working state. When you disable it, Windows may keep more USB devices active. That can matter most on a laptop running on battery, but connected devices can draw power in other states as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s recommendation is therefore to leave selective suspend enabled unless you are testing a specific problem. The practical trade-off is straightforward:

  • Enabled: preserves the normal Windows power-saving behavior and is the recommended default.
  • Disabled temporarily: can show whether selective suspend is involved in a reproducible disconnect or resume symptom, but may increase power use and has broad scope.
  • Disabled permanently: should be reserved for a clearly understood compatibility case after testing, with the battery and multi-device consequences accepted.

No general battery-savings number applies to all hardware. USB device design, hub behavior, drivers, workload, and whether the PC is on battery or AC all change the result.

Do not confuse USB selective suspend with Windows power mode

Windows also offers an overall power-mode selector. Microsoft describes the Windows 10 and Windows 11 choices as battery efficiency, balanced, or performance, with availability depending on the PC and its manufacturer. That selector is not the same control as USB selective suspend setting.

Changing the overall power mode does not directly tell you whether an individual USB port may be selectively suspended. Conversely, changing USB selective suspend does not switch the computer between battery-efficiency, balanced, and performance modes. Use Control Panel’s Advanced Power Options when the question is specifically USB behavior.

When the setting is missing or the labels do not match

  • USB settings is absent: The control may be hidden or unavailable in that Windows installation or power plan. Do not infer that a registry modification is the normal next step.
  • The Power Management tab is absent: The device driver may not expose a device-level power checkbox. This is expected for some hardware.
  • Your menu names differ: Windows builds and manufacturers can change presentation. Look for the equivalent Advanced Power Options and USB selective-suspend entry rather than assuming the feature is missing.
  • The instructions describe Windows 7: Treat USB Root Hub resume guidance from that era as legacy and do not assume it applies to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • You cannot identify the active plan: Return to Power Options and use the plan marked as selected before opening its advanced settings.

When a control is unavailable or the available options do not match your hardware, consult the PC or device maker. They can document which power controls their firmware and drivers expose for your specific Windows build.

Restore the original setting after testing

Open the same path—Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > USB settings > USB selective suspend setting—and return the tested state to its original value. If you changed a device checkbox, reopen that device’s Properties and restore Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power to its prior state.

Restoring the default is especially important on a battery-powered PC or when several USB devices are connected. Keep a short record of the device, port, power state, sleep action, and result so a manufacturer or support technician can reproduce the remaining problem without repeating broad, unrelated changes.
