To choose where a new contact is saved, open Samsung Contacts, tap Add (+), and use the drop-down at the top left of the new-contact form to pick a location such as Phone or Google. To relocate contacts you already have, go to Menu > Manage contacts > Move contacts. These are two different jobs, and a third one, setting a default, exists only on some software versions.
Three tasks that get confused
- Choosing a location for one new contact. You pick the destination on the add-contact form. Samsung US Support gives Phone and Google as examples.
- Setting a default for future contacts. This applies only to new contacts. It does not move anything already saved elsewhere.
- Moving existing contacts. This is a separate tool under Manage contacts.
Menu wording and available controls vary by model, region and software version. Samsung’s published guidance doesn’t include a model-by-model list, so if a menu below is missing on your phone, fall back on the location selector in the add-contact form, which is the method Samsung US documents.

Save a new contact to a specific location
- Open the Contacts app and tap Add (the plus sign).
- Tap the storage drop-down in the upper left of the form.
- Select the destination, such as Phone or the Google account you want.
- Enter the details and tap Save.
This affects only the contact you are creating.
Set Google as the default for new contacts
Samsung UK’s support page (updated 30 April 2024) documents this path: Contacts > Menu (three horizontal lines) > Manage contacts > Set default storage location > Google account. Samsung notes that a contact saved to My phone or another account will not be saved to Google through this setting, so the choice matters for every contact you add.

Move contacts that already exist
- Open Contacts.
- Tap Menu (three horizontal lines) > Manage contacts > Move contacts.
- Choose the source location and select the contacts to move, then tap Done.
- Choose the destination and tap Move.
Samsung lists source locations such as Samsung account, phone storage and Google account. A SIM card is available as a destination only if one is inserted. The guides don’t establish how much a SIM can hold or how it behaves across carriers and devices, so check your own SIM before relying on it.
What each location means for sync and backup

Back up contacts that are stuck on the device
If you’d rather not move everything by hand, Google documents an automatic option for Android devices that support it. Open Settings, go to the Google services area, then choose All services > Backup & restore > Google Contacts sync. Select the account, open View settings, and turn on Backup device-only & SIM contacts automatically. The route can differ by Android build.

Troubleshooting
“I can’t find Default storage location”
Samsung UK uses that label, while Samsung US shows the picker in the add-contact form. Community posts also report menu differences between versions, though those are anecdotal. Use the form’s selector, and avoid drastic fixes such as clearing the Contacts app’s data.

“A contact didn’t sync to Google”
It was probably saved to Phone or another account. Open the contact, check its storage account, and use Move contacts to send it to Google.
“Contacts show on this phone but not my new one”
They’re likely device-local. Move them to Google, or enable the device-only backup above if your phone supports it, then sign in on the new phone.
