Short answer: WhatsApp does not currently document a control that speeds up an ordinary video while keeping its audio at normal speed. The 1x, 1.5x and 2x controls described in WhatsApp’s Help Center are for voice messages, not videos. WhatsApp’s video tools cover editing and muting, and muting removes sound rather than preserving it at a different speed.
A limited Status-video experiment may be different: a report dated October 8, 2026 describes a press-and-hold gesture that plays some Status videos at 2x for certain Android beta testers. That report does not establish normal-speed audio or broad availability. Check the controls on the specific video in your account instead of assuming that a voice-message speed button applies.

What WhatsApp officially lets you speed up
WhatsApp distinguishes between voice-message playback and video playback. That distinction explains why many instructions found online appear to promise a video-speed feature but do not work when you open a video in a chat.
Voice messages have a documented speed button
WhatsApp’s Help Center says that, while a voice message is playing, you can click the 1x icon to increase playback to 1.5x or 2x. The icon belongs to the voice-message player. It is not documented as a control for an attached video, a video message, or a Status.

If you tap 1x beside a voice note, both the spoken recording and its timeline are being played faster. That is useful when you want to get through a long voice message, but it does not provide separate controls for a video’s picture and sound.
Video tools cover editing and muting
WhatsApp’s official video-editing instructions describe the tools shown when you prepare or edit media, including trimming and a mute-video control. The documentation reviewed does not describe an independent video-speed setting, nor does it describe a way to leave the audio at 1x while changing only the images.
Muting is a different operation. It removes the audio track from the WhatsApp copy or the media you are preparing to send; it does not keep the sound playing at its original pace while the picture is accelerated.

Video messages start muted until you tap
In a July 27, 2023 announcement, Meta explained that video messages play automatically on mute when opened in a chat and that tapping the video starts the sound. This is an audio-on or audio-off behavior, not a speed control. Tapping a video message cannot be treated as a way to set separate picture and audio rates.
First identify which kind of WhatsApp video you have
The available controls depend on whether the item is a normal chat attachment, a video message, or a Status. Use this table before trying any 1x button or gesture.
| Video type | Documented speed control | Documented audio behavior | What is established about normal-speed audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video received or sent as a normal chat attachment | None in the official video instructions reviewed | Standard video sound, subject to the phone’s volume and mute state | WhatsApp does not document a separate video-speed and audio-speed setting |
| Video message recorded in a chat | No documented 1.5x or 2x video control | Opens muted; tapping starts the sound, according to Meta’s July 27, 2023 announcement | No documented way to accelerate the picture while holding audio at 1x |
| Status video | A reported press-and-hold 2x gesture is rolling out to some Android beta testers | The report does not explain whether sound remains at normal speed | Not established; availability is limited and changing |
The table separates confirmed documentation from a limited feature report. The absence of a control in the official instructions does not prove that no experiment exists on any device, but it does mean you should not promise a universal method.
How to check an ordinary chat video
For a video that appears inside an individual or group chat as a normal media attachment, follow these checks. They tell you whether your current WhatsApp build exposes a control without confusing it with the voice-note player.

- Open the chat and tap the video. Let the video open in WhatsApp’s viewer rather than tapping a nearby voice message.
- Look at the controls shown over the video. A speed button, if one exists in your build, would need to appear on the video viewer itself. Do not use a 1x icon displayed beside a voice note as evidence that the video can be sped up.
- Play a short section with sound. If you see no video-speed option, WhatsApp has not exposed a documented control for that item. There is no official setting you can enable elsewhere to split the picture speed from the audio speed.
- Do not select mute as a substitute. The mute-video control removes sound. It cannot produce faster images with normal-speed speech or music.
- Leave the original file unchanged if the timing matters. Repeatedly exporting or forwarding a file can create a new copy and may change its quality or metadata, but it does not add an independent speed control to WhatsApp.
If the video has an unusual presentation, such as an inline preview or a file opened by another application, identify which application is actually playing it. WhatsApp’s voice-message control does not carry over to another player.
What to record when a control appears
If a speed icon or gesture is visible, note the media type, phone platform, WhatsApp version and whether the item is a chat attachment or Status. Those details matter because a control can be tied to one player or a limited rollout. Test the same short segment at normal speed and at the offered speed, then listen for any change in speech pitch, timing or missing audio. Treat the result as behavior of that particular account, not as a universal WhatsApp setting.
How to check a WhatsApp video message
Video messages are short, circular recordings made from the chat composer. Their initial muted state can be mistaken for a playback option because the sound starts only after an interaction.
- Open the video message in the chat. It may begin playing without sound.
- Tap the video once. According to Meta’s July 27, 2023 product announcement, this starts the sound.
- Check for a speed control on the video itself. The documented mute-on-open and tap-for-sound behavior does not include 1.5x or 2x playback.
- Compare only the audio state, not the playback rate. If sound starts after the tap, that confirms the mute toggle; it does not show that the audio can be held at normal speed while the picture is accelerated.
On a video message, the documented controls therefore answer “when can I hear it?” but not “can I make the picture faster than the sound?”
What the reported Status 2x gesture means
A report dated October 8, 2026 describes WhatsApp rolling out a press-and-hold gesture for 2x Status playback to some Android beta testers. The reported gesture is holding the right side of the screen while viewing a Status. This is a limited rollout report, not a guarantee for every Android account, iPhone, desktop session, or stable release.
How to check whether your account has it
- Open the Status tab and select a video Status.
- Press and hold the right side of the screen. If your account has the reported experiment, the Status may indicate 2x playback while you hold the gesture.
- Listen carefully during the gesture. The report does not say whether the audio remains at normal speed, becomes faster with the video, or is handled in another way.
- Release and compare. Releasing the screen should return to the normal viewing behavior if the gesture is present, but the rollout report does not define every platform’s interaction.
Do not use the Status gesture as proof that ordinary chat videos support the same feature. Status and chat media can receive different controls, and a beta rollout can change or disappear. Most importantly, the report leaves the audio treatment unresolved, so it cannot answer the specific requirement of faster video with normal-speed audio.
Why this does not yet solve the audio requirement
A 2x label only establishes that some aspect of playback is being accelerated. It does not establish that the visual track is doubled while the soundtrack remains at 1x. Until the behavior is explicitly documented, compare the voice and picture yourself and avoid relying on the gesture for interviews, lessons, captions or any other content where timing matters.

Why the voice-note 1x button is the wrong instruction
Search results and short tutorials often show a 1x button and tell readers to tap it. WhatsApp’s own wording limits that instruction to a message that is playing as a voice message. A video opened in a chat has a different player and a different set of documented tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Voice note: 1x can change the voice-message rate to 1.5x or 2x.
- Chat video: the reviewed official instructions do not document an equivalent speed button.
- Video message: tapping starts sound after the initial mute; it does not set a speed.
- Status: a reported 2x hold gesture may exist for some Android beta users, but its audio behavior is not established.
Seeing 1x next to one media type does not imply that WhatsApp has a global playback-speed preference. Treat each player independently.
If you need faster images and normal-speed audio
WhatsApp itself does not document a reliable way to create that combination. The practical choices depend on whether you need to watch the file privately or send a new file to someone else.
Watching inside WhatsApp
For an ordinary chat video or a video message, there is no confirmed in-app procedure that changes only the picture rate. You can play the file normally, use the documented mute behavior, or wait to see whether your account receives a separate experiment. None of those options guarantees accelerated images with unchanged audio.
Preparing a new file outside WhatsApp
A separate video editor would need to provide two independent controls: one for the visual timeline and another for the audio track. In principle, that kind of editor could shorten the visual duration while leaving the audio at 1x, but WhatsApp’s documentation does not verify a particular editor, import path, export format, or resulting synchronization. The output must be checked on the device and again after it is sent, because an editor may stretch, repeat, mute, or otherwise alter the audio instead of preserving it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you choose this route, treat it as a file-production task rather than a WhatsApp playback setting. Keep the original file, make a short test segment first, confirm that speech remains intelligible and synchronized, and only then prepare the complete video. Do not assume that an editor’s single “speed” slider affects video and audio independently.
Questions to answer before exporting
- Is the editor changing the visual duration or the whole clip? A single clip-speed command may alter both video and audio.
- Can the audio be detached or kept on its own track? Independent handling is essential to preserve a 1x soundtrack.
- What happens when the shortened video ends? If the audio is longer, the editor may cut it, loop it or leave a mismatch.
- Does the exported file still play correctly in WhatsApp? Check the finished copy in the same chat type where it will be used.
These are requirements for evaluating an external workflow, not WhatsApp features. If the editor cannot expose separate video and audio controls, it cannot reliably meet the requested result.

Sending a muted accelerated clip
If sound is not required, WhatsApp’s mute control can remove it, but that solves a different problem. A muted clip may be useful for a visual demonstration, yet it cannot satisfy a request for normal-speed speech, music, or ambient sound.

“I see 1x, but the video is not getting faster”
You are probably looking at a voice message’s player. Close that item and open the video itself. The official 1x instruction applies to voice-message playback.
“The video starts silently, so WhatsApp must be changing its speed”
That is the documented behavior for video messages: they open muted, and tapping starts the sound. Mute state and playback rate are separate functions.
“Holding the right side does nothing on Status”
The reported 2x gesture is limited to some Android beta testers. Your account, platform, or release may not be included. A missing gesture is not evidence that you configured it incorrectly.
“Status audio sounds different at 2x”
The October 8, 2026 report does not establish how audio is handled. Do not assume the sound remains at normal speed. If preserving the original audio rate is essential, the reported gesture does not provide a confirmed solution.
“An update should add the control immediately”
Feature availability can depend on video type, platform, app version, and rollout cohort. An update may be necessary for a newly released feature, but it cannot guarantee access to a limited experiment or create a documented control where none is listed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“Forwarding the video will reveal a hidden speed option”
Forwarding changes how the item is delivered, not which player controls WhatsApp documents. Open the forwarded copy and identify whether it is still a normal chat attachment, a video message or a Status. Do not infer a new feature from a different preview or mute state.
Best Value
What is and is not confirmed
- WhatsApp documents 1.5x and 2x playback for voice messages through the 1x icon.
- The official video instructions reviewed document editing and muting, not an independent video-speed and audio-speed control.
- Meta’s July 27, 2023 announcement says video messages open muted and play sound after you tap them.
- A report dated October 8, 2026 describes a press-and-hold 2x gesture for some Status videos on Android beta, but not universal access.
- The Status report does not establish that audio stays at normal speed.
- No confirmed WhatsApp procedure currently meets the exact requirement of faster video with unchanged audio for ordinary chat videos.
Bottom line for each video type
| Your media | Best-supported action | Can WhatsApp be relied on to keep audio at 1x while video is faster? |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary video in a chat | Play it normally; do not use the voice-note 1x control | No documented method |
| Video message | Tap to start sound after it opens muted | No documented method |
| Status video | Check whether press-and-hold on the right side reveals the reported 2x beta gesture | No; the report does not establish audio behavior or broad availability |
| File you can edit before sending | Use only an editor that demonstrably separates visual and audio speed, then verify the exported file | Not guaranteed by WhatsApp; editor-specific |
For the specific question “How do I speed up a WhatsApp video without speeding up the audio?”, the accurate answer is that WhatsApp has no universally documented in-app method. The voice-message speed button is not a video control, muting removes sound, and the reported Status experiment does not confirm normal-speed audio.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tap WhatsApp’s 1x button on a video?
No documented video procedure uses that button. WhatsApp’s Help Center describes the 1x control for voice messages, where it changes playback to 1.5x or 2x. A 1x icon beside a voice note does not control an attached video.
Does muting a WhatsApp video keep the audio at normal speed?
No. Muting removes the audio. It can create a silent accelerated-looking clip only if another process changes the picture speed; it cannot preserve speech, music or ambient sound at 1x.
Why does my WhatsApp video message open without sound?
Meta announced on July 27, 2023 that video messages play automatically muted when opened in a chat. Tapping the video starts the sound. This is a mute toggle, not a playback-speed control.
How do I try the reported 2x Status gesture?
Open a video Status and press and hold the right side of the screen. The gesture is reported for some Android beta testers, so it may not appear on your account or stable release. Release the screen to return to normal viewing if the gesture is available.
Will Status audio stay at normal speed during 2x playback?
That has not been established. The October 8, 2026 report describes the gesture but does not explain the audio treatment. Do not rely on it when normal-speed audio is essential.
Can an external editor make the video faster while leaving audio at 1x?
Possibly, but the editor must expose separate visual and audio controls. WhatsApp does not verify a particular editor or export workflow. Make a short test, retain the original, and check the finished file before sending it.
Does this work differently on iPhone, Android and desktop?
Feature availability can vary by platform, app version, video type and rollout cohort. The reported Status gesture is specifically limited to some Android beta testers; it is not established for iPhone, desktop or every Android account.
Is there a WhatsApp setting that enables independent video and audio speed?
The official instructions reviewed do not document such a setting. Ordinary chat videos have no universally confirmed in-app method for faster visuals with unchanged audio.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: WhatsApp documents speed controls for voice messages, not ordinary videos. Video messages can open muted and play sound after a tap, while a limited Status 2x gesture has unresolved audio behavior. For faster pictures with normal-speed audio, use only a verified external editing workflow with separate tracks; WhatsApp itself does not currently guarantee this result.
