How to Change Videos in a 24/7 YouTube Kirtan Stream Without Ending the Broadcast

To change the video without ending your YouTube broadcast, keep the encoder streaming and switch the media it sends. In OBS Studio, either transition to another prepared scene or use a VLC Video playlist. Do not click End Stream for an ordinary content change. The broadcast can remain live while the picture and sound change, though the change is not guaranteed to be gap-free for viewers.

What changes—and what stays live

The encoder determines the audio and video sent to YouTube. YouTube’s setup instructions tell you to enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder, then start sending the feed. So, for a media change, switch the encoder’s output rather than looking for a universal “replace video” control in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe how to start and end a stream.

The broadcast event and the incoming encoder feed are related but distinct. Google explains that a broadcast is a watchable YouTube event and a stream is the resource transmitting audio and video; its API documentation even describes a 24/7 broadcast remaining live while another broadcast uses the same stream. That distinction helps explain why changing the media sent by an active encoder is not the same action as ending the YouTube event. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

Keep OBS connected and streaming while you make the change. A scene transition or playlist progression does not deliberately stop the encoder or invoke YouTube’s End Stream action. It does not, however, guarantee uninterrupted frames or audio; test your actual setup before relying on it for a live devotional program.

Option 1: Switch between prepared OBS scenes

Scenes are best when you want to choose the next video yourself—for example, to move from an opening prayer to a longer kirtan recording at a planned moment. OBS scenes combine sources, including media files; its Sources Guide explains adding and controlling sources.

  1. Prepare a scene for each video or content block. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene, then use Sources to add the appropriate media source. Repeat for each planned segment. Give scenes clear names so you can identify them during the broadcast.
  2. Check the picture and sound in each scene. Confirm the intended video is visible and its audio reaches the mixer. A scene can look correct while playing the wrong audio source—or no audio—so check both before going live.
  3. Preview the next scene with Studio Mode, if useful. Studio Mode separates the Preview scene from the live Program output. Select the next scene in Preview, verify it, then use a transition such as Cut or Fade to send it to Program. OBS allows transition choices and duration to be configured; the OBS Studio Overview Guide covers Studio Mode, transitions, and scene hotkeys.
  4. Switch scenes while the stream remains active. Select the prepared scene in OBS or use a configured scene hotkey. Do not stop streaming in OBS or click End Stream in YouTube Studio just to change the media.

Rehearse transitions with the same sources and audio routing you will use on air. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before a first stream. A brief fade, a hard cut, or a momentary gap can depend on your setup; the documentation does not promise a zero-gap handoff.

  1. Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS requires VLC for VLC Video sources. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to an OBS scene. In Sources, select +, then choose VLC Video. Add the local video files to its playlist and arrange them in the order you want.
  3. Set playback behavior. The source supports Loop Playlist (on by default) and Shuffle Playlist (off by default). Choose the behavior that suits the program. OBS also provides audio track selection and visibility behavior for the source.
  4. Test the playlist in the active scene. Confirm the source is visible, each file plays, and the audio is correct. Prepare and test playlist edits before relying on them during an in-progress broadcast: OBS’s documentation does not establish a safe live-edit procedure for every version.

If a playlist change is not reflected as expected, avoid stopping the broadcast as a first response. Check that the VLC source is visible in the active scene, that the intended files are in its playlist, and that VLC is installed. Use a prepared scene or known-good playlist while you diagnose the issue.

Check YouTube access and rights before the stream

Live streaming must be available for your channel, and YouTube’s rules and current limits apply to the account and stream. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started information if you cannot start a stream or the expected controls are missing.

For kirtan, confirm that you have permission to livestream every recording and visual, and to archive them where applicable. Music and video rights may belong to performers, labels, temples, or other parties; a technical setup does not grant those rights. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not promise that a stream beyond that duration will be archived as a complete replay, so do not rely on the public replay as your only archive for a continuous stream.

Troubleshoot a video change that does not work

  • The YouTube page went offline: Check whether OBS stopped streaming or YouTube Studio’s End Stream control was used. A media switch should happen in the encoder without intentionally ending the event.
  • The new picture appears, but the audio is wrong or silent: Check the audio source and OBS mixer for the active scene or VLC source. Preview and test each scene with audio before using it on air.
  • A VLC playlist is unavailable or does not play: Verify VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS). Confirm the intended media is in the playlist and the source is visible in the active scene.
  • A playlist edit does not take effect during playback: Do not assume live editing behaves identically in every OBS version. Test changes ahead of time; for an immediate controlled change, switch to a prepared scene whose output you have verified.
  • Viewers report buffering or a brief interruption: Scene changes and playlist transitions are not documented as guaranteed gap-free. Rehearse the transition and watch the output and audio, but do not promise viewers a buffer-free switch.
  • The stream has no complete replay: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed full replay of a longer continuous session. Arrange separate recording or archive plans if you need a complete copy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep a home computer and encoder running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded media from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or to other platforms.
