In Windows 11, press Windows key + U, choose Text cursor, and adjust the available controls. The text cursor is different from the mouse pointer and from browser caret browsing.
What the text cursor means
The text cursor, also called the insertion point, is the usually thin, blinking vertical line showing where the next character will appear. You see it in document editors, email, browser text fields, Notepad, and other controls that accept typing.
Windows uses “cursor” for several different things:
| What you see or want to do | Correct feature |
|---|---|
| You cannot tell where typing will begin | Windows Text cursor settings |
| You want the typing line to be wider | Text cursor thickness |
| You want a colored marker around the typing line | Text cursor indicator |
| You want to move through webpage text with the keyboard | Browser caret browsing |
| You cannot find the arrow controlled by the mouse | Mouse pointer settings |
| You want all interface text or controls enlarged | Text size, display scaling, Magnifier, or app zoom |
The text-cursor controls are part of Windows accessibility features; they are not a separate program to download.

Change the text cursor in Windows 11
- Press Windows key + U to open Accessibility settings, or go to Start > Settings > Accessibility.
- Select Text cursor.
- Use Text cursor thickness to make the insertion point wider. Move the slider right and use the preview to judge the result.
Thickness changes the insertion cursor itself. It does not enlarge the mouse pointer, increase general text size, or change the zoom level in an individual application. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows accessibility guidance.
Add or remove the colored text cursor indicator
Turn it on
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor.
- Turn on Text cursor indicator.
- Adjust the Size slider.
- Choose one of the recommended colors, or select Choose another color for a custom color.
The indicator is a locating aid around the insertion point, useful when a thin caret blends into a white document, dark editor, busy webpage, or low-contrast interface. Microsoft’s color and contrast guidance recommends testing accessibility choices against the backgrounds you actually use.
Choose a practical size and color
- Test the indicator in both light and dark themes, plus your most-used editors and websites.
- Choose a color with strong contrast against those backgrounds, rather than selecting a bright color solely for appearance.
- Do not rely on color alone if you have color-vision deficiencies; combine a suitable color with greater cursor thickness or other accessibility tools.
- A very large indicator can cover nearby letters or punctuation and become distracting, so increase it only as much as needed.
Turn it off
Return to Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor and switch Text cursor indicator off. The ordinary text cursor remains available, including any thickness setting you selected.

Windows 10 location
In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Text cursor. The page provides controls to change cursor thickness, turn on the text-cursor indicator, change its size, and select a suggested or custom color. Windows 10 uses Ease of Access where Windows 11 uses Accessibility; menu wording can also vary with feature updates. Microsoft describes the feature in its Windows support documentation.

Text cursor, mouse pointer, and caret browsing are different
Text cursor
This marks the insertion position in a text field or editor. Changing its thickness or indicator is the right response when you lose the place where typing will occur.
Mouse pointer
This is the arrow or other pointer moved by a mouse or touchpad. Its size and color are changed in mouse-pointer settings, not in Text cursor.

Caret browsing
Caret browsing lets you navigate webpage text with the keyboard. In Microsoft Edge, press F7 to toggle it for the current session. To keep it enabled, open Settings and more > Settings > Accessibility and enable Navigate pages with a text cursor. Edge documents this separately from Windows’ typing-cursor appearance: Microsoft Edge accessibility features.
When the cursor is still hard to see
- Click a standard field in Notepad or another basic Windows text editor. If the cursor is visible there, the problem may be specific to the original application.
- In Accessibility > Text cursor, increase thickness first, then enable the indicator and adjust its size.
- Try both light and dark themes and check whether the cursor is blending into a particular background.
- Look for the affected app’s own caret, editor, theme, accessibility, or hardware-acceleration settings.
- Test outside a remote-desktop session or virtual machine. Remote rendering can produce cursor flicker or stale graphics.
- Toggle the indicator off and on, then close and reopen the application. If the issue is system-wide, sign out and back in or restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates and current graphics-driver updates.
Custom editors, terminals, browser controls, games, remote sessions, and compatibility environments may draw their own caret or respond differently to the Windows setting. A Windows indicator is therefore not guaranteed to look identical in every program.

Other accessibility options
- Text size: enlarges displayed text, but does not necessarily make the insertion point easier to locate.
- Display scaling: enlarges many Windows and application elements, although it can change layouts, line wrapping, and usable screen space.
- Magnifier: enlarges the area around the cursor for inspection, but adds a separate navigation step.
- Contrast themes: can increase distinction among text, backgrounds, controls, and cursor elements.
- On-Screen Keyboard: press Windows key + Ctrl + O when a physical keyboard is difficult to use.
- Narrator or another screen reader: may be more suitable when visual cursor tracking is not sufficient.
These alternatives address readability, navigation, or input access; they do not all directly change the text cursor.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the blinking speed?
Microsoft’s current Windows accessibility documentation covers thickness, indicator, size, and color, but does not establish a standard Windows 11 Settings control for cursor blink speed.
Why does the setting appear to do nothing in one application?
The application may render its own caret or fail to repaint it correctly. Compare the behavior in Notepad, check the app’s display and editor options, and test outside remote or virtualized sessions.
Is there a shortcut that directly toggles the text-cursor indicator?
Microsoft documents Windows key + U to open Accessibility settings, but not a universal shortcut that directly switches the Text cursor indicator on or off.
