Tap a tone to select it, or choose None to keep reminder notifications visible without an alert sound. This is a system-wide Reminders setting, not a sound picker for individual reminders.
Change the Reminders notification sound
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Reminder Alerts.
- Tap the alert tone you want. The selected sound is used for Reminders alerts generally.

Turn reminder sounds off
In Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Reminder Alerts, select None. Reminders can still appear on the Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or as banners if their notification permissions remain enabled. Choosing None changes the sound; it does not delete reminders or disable their visual alerts.
Make reminders louder or use vibration instead
Adjust alert volume
Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and move the Ringtone and Alerts slider. Apple identifies this control as the volume setting for incoming-call and alert sounds: iPhone sound and haptic controls.
Review Haptics and Silent Mode
Sound and vibration are separate. In Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, choose the behavior you want for alerts when the iPhone is in Silent Mode or ring mode. The available behavior depends on your selected Haptics option and the phone’s current Silent Mode state; Silent Mode is not a universal explanation for every quiet reminder.

If a reminder appears but makes no sound
Check these causes in order:
- Confirm the tone. Return to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Reminder Alerts and make sure a tone—not None—is selected.
- Raise alert volume. Check the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Enable Reminders notifications. Go to Settings > Apps > Reminders > Notifications. Turn on notifications and enable the delivery locations you need, such as Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners. Apple’s notification guidance is at iPhone notification settings.
- Check Focus. Open Settings > Focus and Control Center to see whether a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is silencing or delaying Reminders.
- Check Scheduled Summary. If Reminders is included in Scheduled Summary, its notification may arrive at the summary time instead of when the reminder is due. Use immediate delivery for time-critical alerts. See Apple’s explanation of notification delivery and summaries: View and respond to notifications.
- Check the trigger. A reminder with only a date does not necessarily sound at a time you expect. Apple provides a Today Notification option for all-day reminders assigned a date without a time. A location-based reminder depends on its location trigger and permissions being met.
- Run a controlled test. Create a new reminder with a specific time a few minutes ahead. If that works, the original reminder’s date, time, repeat rule, or location condition is the likely cause.
Can you use a custom song or audio file?
The Reminder Alerts screen directly supports the tones Apple makes available in its list and the None option. Apple documents the Tone Store and GarageBand for obtaining or creating iPhone tones, but does not document unrestricted import of an arbitrary audio file specifically for Reminders. Therefore, do not assume that every GarageBand export or purchased tone will appear in the Reminders selector. Apple’s tone guidance is available at Create and manage ringtones with GarageBand and the Tone Store and Apple’s additional tone guidance.
Can each reminder have a different sound?
No Apple-documented per-reminder sound picker is provided. The Reminder Alerts choice applies generally to Reminders alerts on that iPhone. You can still give each reminder its own date, time, repeat schedule, location, and other alert conditions.

Does changing the sound change when the reminder is due?
No. Selecting a different Reminder Alerts tone changes only the audio used when an alert is delivered. It does not change the reminder’s due date, time, repeat pattern, or location trigger.
Why you may not see “Reminder Alerts”
- Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics; the current control is not primarily under Settings > Notifications > Reminders.
- Use the search field in Settings and search for Reminder Alerts.
- Update iOS, then restart the iPhone.
- Review Settings > Apps > Reminders > Notifications.
- Create a timed test reminder a few minutes in the future.
If the control remains absent, record the exact iOS version, device region, and language. Apple’s menu labels and placement can differ on earlier iOS releases or with regional and language settings.

Other devices and apps
This setting applies to Apple’s built-in Reminders app on the iPhone. A reminder synchronized through iCloud or another account uses the receiving iPhone’s local alert preferences, while an Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, or CarPlay system may handle its own notifications. Third-party apps such as Todoist, Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do, and medication apps can expose separate notification controls; Apple notes that per-app sound selection is available only for some apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing Text Tone change Reminders alerts?
No. Text Tone and Reminder Alerts are separate sound categories. Change Reminders under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Reminder Alerts.

How do I silence reminders but keep banners?
Select None under Reminder Alerts, then leave Reminders notifications enabled in Settings > Apps > Reminders > Notifications.
Do date-only reminders make a sound at midnight?
Not necessarily. Date-only reminders can use the Reminders Today Notification behavior rather than a sound at an assumed midnight time.
