Short answer: You may be able to change a stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate while it is live, but there is no universal method that guarantees the change will take effect without a reconnect or interruption. First determine whether you mean the quality viewers select or the quality your encoder sends. For a continuous lesson, check the specific encoder and platform’s live-change behavior and test before changing a critical stream.
First, identify which “quality” you want to change
A live lesson has a source stream—the video encoded and sent by your streaming software or hardware—and may also have several playback renditions created by the platform. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.

- Viewer playback quality: You want viewers to be able to choose a lower or higher playback resolution. You may not need to change the encoder at all.
- Source quality: You want to change the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that your encoder sends to the platform. This is the change most likely to affect stream continuity.
- Recording quality: You want to change a local recording or a platform archive. Check where the recording is made: recording settings can differ from stream settings, and changing the stream does not necessarily change an existing recording.
If you mean viewer playback quality
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. That can give viewers playback-quality choices without changing the resolution or bitrate sent by your encoder. The available renditions and viewer controls depend on the platform and stream; don’t assume every destination behaves like YouTube. If you mean the encoder’s active output
There is no platform-independent setting or sequence that guarantees an active 24/7 stream can change resolution, frame rate, or bitrate without a reconnect, brief discontinuity, or effect on the recording. The result depends on the encoder, its version, the destination, the ingest protocol, and how the recording is made. Identify those pieces first, then consult their documentation for changing output while live.
- Record your current setup. Note the encoder and version, destination platform, ingest method, current output resolution and frame rate, bitrate, and whether the recording is local or platform-hosted.
- Check live-change support for the exact setting. Look specifically for what happens when changing output resolution, frame rate, or streaming bitrate during an active broadcast. A setting being editable in the interface does not by itself establish that it can be applied without reconnecting.
- Choose a continuity plan. If the lesson must not be interrupted, test the change outside the critical session. If your platform and encoder document a redundant or failover workflow, follow that documented procedure; don’t assume a generic handoff is seamless.
- Apply one change at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, or resource issue caused a problem. Follow the encoder’s instructions for when a changed setting takes effect.
- Inspect the live health indicators. Check the platform’s stream health and the encoder’s connection status, then confirm the picture and audio at the viewer end. If the platform reports an ingest issue, use its specific diagnosis rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
For OBS Studio: understand the output settings before changing them
OBS distinguishes the Base (Canvas) Resolution from the Output (Scaled) Resolution. The output-scaled resolution is the size OBS sends for streaming and recording. OBS also treats video bitrate as a streaming output setting. A change to the canvas is not automatically the same thing as a change to the stream’s output resolution. Before adjusting OBS during an active broadcast, verify in the documentation for your OBS version and streaming destination whether that output change can take effect live and what transition to expect. The general OBS overview explains the settings; it does not establish that every active stream can change them uninterrupted.

OBS notes that streaming at 60 fps can be substantially more taxing than 30 fps. A higher frame rate or resolution is not automatically an improvement if the system or upload connection cannot sustain it.

For YouTube Live: use settings your connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended ingest settings depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. The following are examples from YouTube’s table—not universal values for other platforms or codecs:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for the specified codec and output, not a promise that your connection can deliver them reliably. Use the complete, current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for your exact configuration. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; choose a setting your available upload capacity can maintain rather than simply choosing the largest number.

For YouTube streams, its health-status guidance describes problems including bitrate that is too high or low, resolution mismatch or unsupported resolution, keyframe frequency, and ingestion starvation. YouTube notes that insufficient incoming video can cause buffering. Its LiveStreams API documentation describes stream configuration and status.

- YouTube reports a bitrate issue: Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check whether your upload can sustain the configured rate.
- YouTube reports a resolution issue: Confirm the encoder’s actual output matches the resolution expected by the stream configuration and is supported by the destination.
- YouTube reports a keyframe issue: Check the encoder’s keyframe interval against YouTube’s two-second recommendation and four-second maximum.
- YouTube reports ingestion starvation or viewers buffer: The platform may not be receiving enough video for smooth playback. Check the upload connection and encoder status; don’t treat viewer playback selection and source ingest as the same control.
- OBS shows increasing dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator: OBS says this signals an unstable connection or insufficient capacity for the configured bitrate. It drops frames to avoid buffering. Review the connection and bitrate together using the OBS Help Portal.
After any adjustment, watch both the encoder and destination health indicators and inspect the stream as a viewer. A setting that appears saved is not enough to confirm that the platform is receiving a stable picture.
