YouTube receives the encoded feed, so whether a playlist edit appears without interrupting the stream depends on the software or service playing the media.
Where to change the playlist
First identify what is generating the video and audio that YouTube receives:
- Local setup: If a computer runs OBS or another encoder, inspect the media source or playlist configuration there.
- Cloud setup: If a cloud playout service runs the stream, use that service’s playlist controls.
YouTube’s encoder workflow connects an encoder to YouTube using a stream URL and key; it does not describe a general YouTube Studio control for changing the upstream media playlist. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream settings guidance.
How to make the change safely
- Identify the active playout system. Confirm which computer, encoder, or cloud service is sending the current feed. Changing a playlist in a different tool will not alter the stream.
- Use that system’s live-edit controls. Follow its current instructions for adding or removing files, reordering items, or selecting a file to play. For example, Gyre documents changing a playlist while a stream is running, and Upstream documents adding and removing files, reordering them, and playing a file on demand while live. These are vendor-specific capabilities; confirm the controls and behavior for your service and plan.
- Check when the edit takes effect. Depending on the tool, a change may publish immediately or take effect at a playback transition. Do not assume that another service behaves like Gyre or Upstream.
- Verify the result in both places. Check the playout system’s current item or status, then inspect YouTube’s live preview or watch page. YouTube recommends previewing and continuously monitoring a stream; see YouTube live-stream tips.
- Restart only if your setup requires it. If the new item does not appear, consult the encoder’s reload behavior. Test any required restart before a production broadcast, because stopping and restarting the sender may interrupt continuity.
What to expect with OBS or a local playlist
Saving a playlist file does not guarantee that a running encoder will reload it. A 2023 OBS forum thread about VLC describes inconsistent results: one change appeared to take effect, while another did not show up until OBS and YouTube were restarted. That is an individual user report, not formal OBS or VLC documentation, so treat it as a warning to verify your own setup rather than a universal rule. OBS forum discussion.

If an edit fails to appear, check that you changed the playlist actually used by the active media source, allow for the current item to finish if the tool applies edits at transitions, and consult the encoder or service’s reload instructions. If a restart is needed, plan for the possible interruption rather than assuming YouTube can swap the upstream playlist for you.
Why YouTube does not control the upstream playlist
The encoder or playout service creates the outgoing audio/video feed, and YouTube ingests it. The stream key identifies the destination connection; it is not a playlist editor. YouTube’s instructions for ending an event say to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. That operational advice concerns ending a stream, not changing its media playlist.
