On a Kindle e-reader this opens Page Display; in a Kindle app it opens reading settings. Choose Font, Layout, More, or Themes on an e-reader, or the equivalent tab in your app. The controls you see depend on your Kindle model, app platform, and the book’s format.
That distinction matters: an e-reader, Android app, iPhone or iPad app, Mac app, Fire tablet, web reader, and PC reader do not expose an identical menu. A title may also limit the menu even when your device supports more options. The shortest path is always to open the book first and look for Aa.

How do I change the page layout on my Kindle?
These steps apply to Kindle e-readers from the sixth generation onward, although the available controls vary by model:

If you are using an app rather than an e-reader, the route is nearly the same: open the book, tap near the top center, tap Aa, and inspect the tabs shown for that platform. Do not use the e-reader tab names as a promise that the app will have the same controls.
Where each Kindle e-reader setting is located
Font
The Font tab controls the appearance of text. Depending on the model and book, you can choose a font family, increase or decrease the font size, and adjust boldness. A heavier weight can make light or thin type easier to distinguish, while a larger size reduces the amount of text visible on each page.
Font controls affect reflowable books. A book that uses a fixed page design may hide these controls; see the format explanation below before treating a missing option as a device fault.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake small changes and read a few paragraphs before changing another setting. A font-size change can alter line breaks, page breaks, and the estimated time or percentage shown in the reading-progress area. That is a display calculation, not a change to the words in the edition.
Layout
Layout contains page geometry options where the model and book support them:
- Margins: choose narrower or wider blank space at the sides of the text.
- Alignment: select the available text-alignment option, such as left alignment or justified text.
- Orientation: switch between portrait and landscape on supported e-readers.
- Spacing: adjust line, paragraph, word, or character spacing when those controls are offered for the title.
Changing margins or spacing changes how many words fit on a page, so the page count and reading-progress estimate can move even though the book itself has not changed.
Orientation is a device capability rather than a universal Kindle-book feature. If portrait and landscape do not appear in Layout, the model or the current software may not support that switch from the reading menu.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →More
The More tab contains additional display choices that are not part of the basic font and layout controls. Depending on the e-reader, this can include whether to show reading progress and whether to display a clock while reading. The exact switches differ by model and software version.
Reading progress can be useful when you want an estimate based on the current layout, but it is not a fixed page reference. Changing type size, margins, or spacing can cause the estimate to be recalculated.
Themes
Themes save a combination of display choices so you can switch between setups quickly. A theme may include font, size, spacing, margins, and other supported reading preferences. If your model does not show a Themes tab, adjust the individual controls instead.
A theme is still limited by the title and device. It cannot make a fixed-layout book reflow, and it cannot add a control that the model does not provide.

How to change the reading view in a Kindle app
In a Kindle app, open a book, tap the top center of the screen, tap Aa, and select the tab for the setting you want. Amazon uses the same Aa entry point across its reading apps, but the controls are not identical on every platform.
For a quick comparison, e-readers group settings under Font, Layout, More, and Themes. Mobile apps generally combine text, page appearance, scrolling, and accessibility controls in their own reading-settings panel. Web and PC readers offer a smaller or different selection. The absence of a tab is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the app is broken.
Android
Android phones and tablets can provide font choices and size, line and paragraph spacing, margins, alignment, brightness, page color, orientation behavior, themes, and continuous scrolling. The app may also expose reading aids such as Assistive Reader, real-time text highlighting, Reading Ruler, and Word Wise. A particular Android device or app release may omit one or more of these options.
To use continuous scrolling when the control is available, open Aa, find the reading-view or layout control, and select scrolling rather than page-by-page swipes. If you are using a Fire tablet, the Reading Ruler has an additional requirement described below.
Android controls can also be affected by the individual book. A reflowable novel may expose font and spacing choices, while a comic or print-replica title may show only the options compatible with its designed pages.
iPhone, iPad, and Mac
The iOS and macOS Kindle apps offer related controls for font, spacing, brightness, page color, margins, alignment, themes, and scrolling, but their labels and placement can differ from Android. Some devices also provide an orientation lock or orientation setting in the app. Open the Aa panel on the device you are using rather than assuming that a control found on another platform will be present.
If you are trying to rotate the reading view, check both the app’s Aa controls and the device’s orientation behavior. An orientation option documented for one device does not establish that every iPhone, iPad, or Mac exposes the same switch.
Web and PC
Kindle’s web and PC reading experiences have smaller or different sets of display controls than the mobile apps. After opening a book, use the on-screen Aa control and inspect the available tabs. If a setting is absent there, it may simply not be implemented for that reading environment or for that title.

Fire tablet
On a Fire tablet, the Kindle app places Reading Ruler under Aa > More. Amazon currently documents the ruler as working only when the book is in continuous-scroll mode. If the ruler is unavailable, enable continuous scrolling first; it will not operate in ordinary page-swipe mode.
Fire’s other app controls remain title- and platform-dependent. A ruler, highlighting aid, or other accessibility option can be visible for one book and absent for another if the book does not support that presentation.

What you can change in the reading view
| Category | Typical controls | Where availability varies |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Font family, font size, boldness on e-readers; line, paragraph, word, and character spacing where supported | Model, platform, and book format |
| Page layout | Margins, alignment, portrait or landscape on supported e-readers; orientation behavior in some apps | Device and app platform |
| Reading view | Background or page color, themes, and continuous scrolling in supported apps | Platform and title |
| Extra display controls | Reading progress and clock on e-readers; brightness and other app-specific controls | Model, platform, and software |
| Reading aids | Reading Ruler, Assistive Reader, text highlighting, and Word Wise where offered | Platform, device, and book support |
There is no single best combination. Larger type, more generous spacing, wider margins, a different background color, or scrolling may make reading more comfortable for one person and less efficient for another. Change one option at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped.
Text settings and page settings solve different problems. Font size and boldness change the characters themselves; line, paragraph, word, and character spacing change the space around them. Margins alter the usable width of the page, while alignment changes where each line sits within that width. Page color and brightness affect the reading view without changing the text flow.
Why can’t I change the font or layout in this Kindle book?
The most common reason is the book’s format rather than the Kindle itself. Kindle titles generally fall into two visual categories:
Reflowable books
In a reflowable book, the text rearranges itself to fit the screen and your selected font and layout. These books normally permit changes such as font size, typeface, spacing, margins, alignment, and—in supported environments—page color or scrolling. The exact set still depends on the device and app.
Reflowable does not mean every control must appear. The publisher, device, app platform, or title can still limit a particular option. The practical test is whether the Aa panel offers the control for that book in the environment you are using.
Fixed-layout books
Fixed-layout books preserve a designed page instead of rebuilding the text around your display settings. Examples include print-replica editions, manga, comics, some children’s books, and some textbooks. They may restrict or remove font, margin, color, spacing, and alignment controls because changing the text geometry could break the intended page.
Kindle Direct Publishing explains the design trade-off this way: “Fixed-layout content does not allow the user to change the font size; allowing font sizes to change could obfuscate content relevant to storytelling.” In a comic, diagram, worksheet, or picture book, moving text independently of the artwork can make the page difficult to interpret.
Check the book’s detail page for accessibility or format information. If the title is identified as fixed layout, a missing Aa option is expected. You can still use any controls the publisher left enabled, but you cannot convert that edition into a fully reflowable one through the reading menu.
This distinction also explains why two books opened on the same Kindle can behave differently. The device may support font, color, and spacing controls, but a fixed-layout title can intentionally suppress them while a reflowable novel exposes them.
How to troubleshoot a missing or ineffective setting
The Aa icon is not visible
- Open the book itself, not the library or home screen.
- Tap the top of the page once to reveal the toolbar; it normally hides while you read.
- On a phone or tablet, tap near the top center rather than the edge gesture area used by the operating system.
- If the toolbar still does not appear, close and reopen the book, then check whether the app needs an update.
The menu is a reading control, so looking for it from the library will not show the same options. Once the toolbar is visible, the icon may be labeled Page Display on an e-reader and simply open reading settings in an app.
A tab or control is missing
Compare the platform you are using with the instructions above. E-reader tabs are not a complete map of the app interface, and Android, iOS, macOS, web, PC, and Fire can expose different options. A setting missing on one platform may be available on another, but it may also be unavailable for the title itself.

- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Next, check the book format on its detail page. If the title is print replica, manga, comic, textbook, or another fixed-layout edition, restricted controls are expected. If it is reflowable, the missing option can still reflect a platform or model limitation rather than an error.
The control appears but does nothing
Check whether the book is fixed layout. In a reflowable book, return to the page after changing the setting and allow a moment for the text to repaginate. If you changed margins, font size, or spacing, a different page count is normal. For Reading Ruler on Fire, switch to continuous scrolling before trying the ruler again.
For a visual comparison, note whether line breaks, margins, or page colors change after you close Aa. If nothing changes in a reflowable title, reopen the panel and confirm that the new value was selected; then close and reopen the book. Avoid judging a spacing change from a single line or a fixed-layout page.
The page looks different after switching devices
Reading settings are constrained by the capabilities of the device, app, and book. A theme or spacing choice available on an e-reader may not exist in the web reader, and a mobile app may offer page-color or scrolling controls that an e-reader does not. Reopen Aa on the new device and select the closest available settings rather than expecting every preference to transfer exactly.
Different screen dimensions also change pagination. Even when the same font and margin choices are available, a phone, tablet, e-reader, and computer can fit different amounts of text on each screen.
How to choose a practical layout
For larger, easier-to-track text
Increase font size modestly, then add line or paragraph spacing if the option is available. If the page feels crowded, widen the margins. These changes reduce the amount of text per screen, so use the reading-progress indicator as a guide instead of comparing page numbers with another device.
Recommended Free Tools
For more words per page
Use a smaller font, narrower margins, and tighter spacing where comfortable. This can reduce page turns, but very compact text may be harder to track, especially on a small screen.
For low-light or visual comfort
Try the available background or page colors and adjust brightness in the app or device. Color choices are not universal: a setting that feels comfortable in one room or at one brightness level may not suit another.
For hands-free or uninterrupted scrolling
Use continuous scrolling if your app offers it. On a Fire tablet, this mode is required for Reading Ruler. On platforms without scrolling, use larger text or spacing to reduce the need to reposition your eyes on each page.
For a consistent setup across books
On an e-reader with Themes, save a combination you use regularly, such as your preferred font, size, spacing, and margins. If Themes is unavailable, record the individual choices and set them again through Aa when needed. A saved theme cannot override a title’s fixed-layout restrictions.

How do I change the page layout on my Kindle?
Open the book, tap the top of the screen, choose Aa, and open Layout on a supported e-reader. Adjust margins, alignment, spacing, or orientation when those controls are offered. In an app, use the equivalent layout or reading-view controls shown for that platform.
How do I change the reading view?
Use Aa while the book is open. Depending on the device and title, reading-view options can include page or background color, themes, brightness, and continuous scrolling. Apps and e-readers do not provide the same list.
Can I change font size with a gesture?
On supported Kindle e-readers, pinch in or out on the page to adjust font size. The Aa panel provides the more precise font-size control when the book supports reflowable text.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhy does my comic or manga ignore my font settings?
Comics and manga are commonly fixed-layout titles. Their page composition is preserved, so font and other reflow controls may not be available.
Does changing margins change the book?
No. It changes how the text is arranged on your screen. Repagination and a different reading-progress estimate are expected, while the book’s content remains unchanged.
Why can I scroll in the app but not on my Kindle e-reader?
Continuous scrolling is an app feature available only on supported platforms and titles. E-readers and apps do not expose the same reading-view controls.
Why is Reading Ruler missing on my Fire tablet?
Amazon places it under Aa > More, and it currently works only in continuous-scroll mode. Turn on continuous scrolling first, then return to More. It may still be unavailable for a title or platform that does not support the aid.
Can I force a fixed-layout book to use a larger font?
No. A fixed-layout edition preserves its designed page, so the publisher may disable font-size and other reflow controls. Check whether a different, reflowable edition of the title exists if adjustable text is essential.
Why did my page count change after I changed the layout?
Font size, margins, alignment, and spacing alter how much text fits on each screen. Kindle repaginates the reflowable text and recalculates progress; the underlying book has not been edited.
Frequently Asked Questions
