The correct file depends on how the animals are spawned. DayZ’s Central Economy separates a map-wide cap from event definitions and ambient territory zones. A change in one layer cannot override a lower limit in another layer.
| Spawn layer | File | Main settings | What the setting controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Map-wide, non-ambient | db/globals.xml |
AnimalMaxCount |
The maximum number of spawned animals that are not ambient, across the map. |
| Event-based | db/events.xml |
nominal, min, max, plus child min/max |
Population targets and bounds for animals created by a specific event. |
| Ambient territories | env/*_territories.xml |
dmin, dmax |
The minimum and maximum ambient animals in an individual territory zone. |
| Ambient registration and aggregate limits | cfgenvironment.xml |
globalCountMax, zoneCountMin, zoneCountMax |
Whether a territory file is registered and, where present, the wider limits applied to that ambient entry. |
Bohemia Interactive’s Central Economy documentation describes AnimalMaxCount as the “Maximal limit of spawned animals (not ambient) across all zones in map.” The value shown in that documentation is 200. That is a default documented value, not a promise that 200 animals is suitable for every host or player population.

For territory files, the StarDZ Team DayZ Modding Wiki defines dmin and dmax as the “min/max animal count in the zone.” Those are local zone bounds, so changing them does not automatically raise an event population or the map-wide non-ambient ceiling.
Find the mission folder that your server actually uses
Every supported map has its own Central Economy files. Editing a different map’s mission directory produces no change on the running server.

| Map | Typical mission folder |
|---|---|
| Chernarus | mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/ |
| Livonia | mpmissions/dayzOffline.enoch/ |
| Sakhal | mpmissions/dayzOffline.sakhal/ |
Open serverDZ.cfg and identify the mission or map configured there. Follow that selection to the active mpmissions directory, then work only on the files below that directory. If your host panel exposes a file manager, verify that you are editing the live server instance rather than a template, staging copy, or archived backup.
Change the map-wide non-ambient cap
What AnimalMaxCount does
AnimalMaxCount is the broadest control for animals that are not ambient. It is a ceiling across all zones in the active map. Raising it makes a higher non-ambient population possible; it does not force the Central Economy to create that many animals immediately, and it does not change ambient territory populations.
How to edit it
- Stop the DayZ server, or otherwise guarantee that no process is writing the mission files.
- Open the active map’s
db/globals.xml. - Find the variable whose name is
AnimalMaxCount. It is represented as avarentry with a numericvalue. - Change only the numeric value. For example, the documented default is represented as
<var name="AnimalMaxCount" value="200" />; replacing200with your chosen ceiling raises or lowers the cap. - Save the file without changing the surrounding XML structure.
Do not treat the number you enter as a guaranteed live count. Event availability, event-level bounds, territory rules, despawn behavior, and the economy’s replenishment cycle can all keep the observed population below this ceiling.

Adjust animals created by events.xml
Understand the event hierarchy
Event-driven animals are controlled in db/events.xml. A relevant event has a parent-level nominal, min, and max. Its child entries can also define their own min and max. The parent and child limits work together.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This hierarchy explains why changing one number often appears to do nothing. Increasing an event’s nominal target while leaving a lower event max still leaves the upper bound unchanged. Raising the parent values while a child entry has a lower max produces the same result. Conversely, changing a child limit does not remove a lower parent ceiling.
Procedure for an event-based animal
- Open the
events.xmlfile in the active mission folder. - Locate the event definition for the animal you want to change. Use the existing event names and child entries in your file; names can differ between maps or mission versions.
- Read the parent
nominal, min, andmaxtogether. Decide whether you are changing the target population, the lower refill bound, the upper event bound, or all three. - Inspect every child entry under that event and compare its
minandmaxwith the parent values. - Raise or lower the necessary limits while keeping the relationships intentional. A higher target with an unchanged lower maximum cannot produce a higher peak.
- Save the XML, validate it, and restart the server before measuring the result.
Use this layer when the animal is supplied by an event definition. Do not use it as a substitute for ambient territory editing: ambient animals can be governed by a different file and may not respond to an event change at all.
Tune ambient animals in territory files
Meaning of dmin and dmax
Ambient territory files are stored below the active mission’s env directory and use names ending in _territories.xml. Each zone has a dmin and dmax. The documented meaning is the minimum and maximum animal count in that zone.
dminis the zone’s lower ambient count.dmaxis the zone’s upper ambient count.dminmust be less than or equal todmax.
To increase ambient animals, edit the zones that cover the areas where you want more activity. Raising one zone’s values affects that zone, not every territory on the map. If several zones are involved, make the same deliberate change in each relevant entry rather than applying a blanket edit to unrelated territories.

Check ambient limits in cfgenvironment.xml
cfgenvironment.xml registers territory files and can add limits to an ambient entry. When the relevant entry contains them, inspect globalCountMax, zoneCountMin, and zoneCountMax alongside the territory file.
The official DayZ-Central-Economy repository’s current master file includes a hen ambient example with globalCountMax set to 50, zoneCountMin set to 1, and zoneCountMax set to 1. That example demonstrates how a territory-wide ceiling and per-zone bounds can coexist; it is not a universal recommendation for every animal or map.
- Find the ambient registration that references the territory file you changed.
- Note whether a
globalCountMaxis present. If it is lower than the combined territory settings, it can remain the effective ceiling. - Compare
zoneCountMinandzoneCountMaxwith thedmin/dmaxvalues in the territory file. - Change only the limits required for your intended population, preserving valid XML and sensible lower-versus-upper relationships.
A safe, repeatable editing workflow
Use this sequence for any of the three control layers. It protects the working mission and makes it possible to identify which change affected the result.
- Stop the server. Do not edit while the server or a management process may be writing mission data.
- Back up the active mission. Copy the complete mission folder, with particular attention to
db/globals.xml,db/events.xml,cfgenvironment.xml, and the entireenvdirectory. - Confirm the map. Read
serverDZ.cfgand open the matching Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal mission path. - Choose one control layer. Start with
AnimalMaxCount, an event definition, or a territory entry based on the kind of animal and spawn behavior you are targeting. - Record the old values. Keep a simple change note containing the file, element, previous number, new number, and date. This makes rollback and comparison unambiguous.
- Edit the smallest possible scope. Change the relevant value rather than reformatting the entire XML file. Preserve element names, nesting, quotation marks, and closing tags.
- Validate the XML. Check that the document remains well formed, every opening tag has a matching close, numeric values are valid, and
dminis not abovedmax. Compare the edited file with your backup. - Restart the server. The new mission files are read during startup; a running process will not reliably apply a file edit made underneath it.
- Allow repopulation time. Observe the server after the Central Economy has had time to refill animals. An immediate count after restart is not a reliable test.
- Change one layer at a time. If you alter globals, events, and territories simultaneously, you cannot tell which limit caused the observed change.
Why an animal-count change may appear to have no effect
You edited the wrong map
The most common silent failure is editing a mission folder that is not selected in serverDZ.cfg. Verify the active map and repeat the change in that map’s directory.
A different layer is the lower ceiling
A higher AnimalMaxCount cannot overcome a lower event or child limit. Higher event values cannot raise an ambient zone. A territory increase can still be constrained by globalCountMax or by zone limits in cfgenvironment.xml. Trace the animal’s spawn system and inspect every applicable upper bound.

The server was not restarted
Editing a file while the server is running does not guarantee that the running economy reloads it. Stop and restart after validating the change.
The economy has not repopulated
Central Economy populations are not necessarily filled instantly. Wait for the normal replenishment process, then observe the same areas or event behavior under comparable conditions.

A missing quote, closing tag, or malformed number can prevent a file from being read correctly. Restore the backup, make a smaller edit, and validate before starting again. If the server fails after a change, reverting the last edited file is the fastest way to isolate the fault.
You changed a target, not an upper bound
For events, nominal expresses a target while max limits the upper end. If the maximum remains lower, increasing only the target cannot increase the peak population. Check child bounds as well.
How high should you set the values?
No source establishes a performance-safe animal count for every CPU, player population, host, or map. Treat any number you choose as a tuning decision for your server, not as a universal best practice.
Best Value
- Begin with a modest increase rather than a large jump.
- Measure whether the intended zones or events actually produce more animals.
- Watch server performance and player-visible spawn behavior after each change.
- Keep the previous working files so you can roll back quickly.
- Reduce the value if the server becomes unstable or the economy behaves unexpectedly.
The documented AnimalMaxCount value of 200 is useful as a reference point, but it does not account for your host, population, mods, or map conditions. Likewise, the hen example’s globalCountMax of 50 and zone values of 1 are configuration examples, not performance tests.
Practical change plans
You want more animals across the map
First identify whether the animals are non-ambient. If they are, raise AnimalMaxCount in db/globals.xml gradually. Then inspect the relevant event definitions in db/events.xml; a lower event or child maximum can still limit the result.
You want more animals from one event
Work only in the matching events.xml entry. Adjust the parent target and bounds, then compare every child min/max. This avoids changing unrelated event populations or ambient territories.
You want more animals in specific ambient areas
Find the territory file covering those areas and raise the selected zones’ dmin and dmax. Check the corresponding ambient registration in cfgenvironment.xml for a lower globalCountMax, zoneCountMin, or zoneCountMax.
You changed values but the map still looks empty
Confirm the active mission path, restart the server, wait for repopulation, and then trace the applicable layer. Do not keep increasing numbers until you know which cap is active; otherwise you can create unnecessarily high settings without changing the observed count.
Final verification checklist
- The edited files belong to the map selected in
serverDZ.cfg. - The original mission folder is backed up.
- You changed the correct layer: globals, events, or ambient territories.
AnimalMaxCountis understood as a non-ambient map-wide ceiling.- Event parent and child limits were checked together.
- Ambient
dminis not greater thandmax. - Any applicable
cfgenvironment.xmlaggregate limits were inspected. - The XML is well formed and compares cleanly with the backup.
- The server was restarted after the edit.
- You waited for replenishment and changed only one layer before evaluating the result.
The reliable way to change DayZ animal numbers is to identify the spawn system first, edit its controlling file, account for every lower cap, and tune incrementally. That approach avoids the two most frequent mistakes: changing the wrong mission and raising a setting that another layer still limits.
