Change the listen directive in the active Nginx server {} block from 8080 to 80, test the configuration, and reload Nginx. If Nginx proxies requests to WordPress or another application on port 8080, change only the public listener; leave proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080; unchanged. Port 80 may require elevated privileges and must not already be occupied by another service.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What actually changes when you remove :8080 from the WordPress URL
A URL such as http://example.com:8080/ tells the browser to connect to TCP port 8080. The default HTTP port is 80, so http://example.com/ connects there without displaying a port number. Nginx decides which port accepts that connection through the listen directive in a server {} block.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The WordPress application does not normally control this listener. WordPress’s Nginx handbook explains that Nginx has no directory-level configuration file equivalent to Apache’s .htaccess or IIS’s web.config; configuration is performed at server level by an administrator, and WordPress cannot modify the Nginx configuration automatically. The port change is therefore an operating-system and Nginx administration task.
There are two common arrangements:
- Standalone Nginx: Nginx serves the WordPress files and usually passes PHP scripts to PHP-FPM. The same Nginx server block contains the public listener, document root, WordPress locations, and PHP-FPM rules.
- Reverse proxy: Nginx accepts public traffic and forwards it to a backend on port 8080. The backend may be WordPress, a PHP application, or another web process. In this design, Nginx can listen on 80 while the backend continues listening on 8080.
Identify which arrangement you have before editing. Moving the backend unnecessarily can create downtime; changing only the public listener is usually sufficient.

Before editing: find the active Nginx server block
Do not change an example file or an unused virtual host and assume the site will move. First locate the configuration that actually answers for the WordPress domain.
Inspect the loaded configuration
On a conventional installation, run the Nginx configuration dump with the privileges required by your system:
sudo nginx -T
The output includes the main configuration and files loaded through include directives. Search it for the domain in server_name, the current listener, and the WordPress document root. A site might use an address-specific form such as listen 0.0.0.0:8080;, listen 127.0.0.1:8080;, or an IPv6 listener rather than the short listen 8080; form.
Confirm the domain and root belong together
Within the candidate block, check:
server_nameincludes the hostname visitors use.rootpoints to the intended WordPress installation.- The block contains the existing
location /and WordPress rewrite behavior. - PHP requests are passed to the same PHP-FPM socket or upstream as before, if Nginx serves PHP directly.
- A reverse-proxy block contains
proxy_passand identifies the backend address and port.
Nginx chooses among matching server blocks using the listen address and port, the Host header, and the default-server rules. If several blocks listen on 8080, changing the wrong one may have no visible effect or may send a different site to port 80.
Back up the file
Make a copy of the active file before editing. Use your normal configuration-management or backup process; the exact path varies by distribution and installation method. A backup lets you restore the previous listener if validation or application checks fail.
Change the public listener from 8080 to 80
In the active server block, replace the port in the public listen directive. Keep the address form and other parameters consistent unless you have a specific reason to change them.

listen 0.0.0.0:8080;
becomes:
listen 0.0.0.0:80;
Do not remove server_name, change the root, delete WordPress rewrite locations, or alter PHP-FPM settings as part of this port-only change. WordPress permalink handling depends on appropriate Nginx rules, and Nginx is not an interchangeable drop-in replacement for Apache configuration.
Keep HTTPS blocks separate
A site that already serves HTTPS normally has a separate block listening on 443, often with TLS certificates and a redirect from HTTP. Change the HTTP block’s listener to 80 and leave the 443 block, certificate paths, and TLS options intact. If the 443 block redirects to a hostname with :8080 explicitly embedded, correct that redirect separately; do not assume changing listen rewrites arbitrary redirect strings.
Reverse-proxy setup: leave the backend on 8080
In a reverse-proxy deployment, the public Nginx listener and the private application port serve different purposes. Nginx accepts a browser connection on 80 and forwards the request to the backend. The backend can continue listening on 8080, so no application port change is required.
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
The proxy_pass value identifies the upstream address and port. Keep it at 127.0.0.1:8080, or keep the actual upstream defined by your deployment, while changing only listen 8080; to listen 80;. The forwarded headers preserve the original host, client address, proxy chain, and HTTP/HTTPS scheme for the application.
When the backend must know the public URL
WordPress may generate absolute links, redirects, or canonical URLs based on its configured site URL and the forwarded scheme. After the listener change, test whether links use the intended hostname and whether HTTPS redirects remain correct. If TLS terminates at Nginx, retain the existing X-Forwarded-Proto behavior and the corresponding trusted-proxy settings used by the application. Do not change the backend port merely because the browser no longer displays :8080.
Do not create a second competing listener
If you add a new port-80 block but leave the old block enabled, Nginx may select an unexpected default server or report a duplicate listen configuration, depending on the addresses and parameters. Prefer editing the active block or deliberately disabling the old public block after confirming what it serves. The backend process can still remain on 8080 without an Nginx server block exposed there.
Check port ownership and privileges before reloading
Port 80 is a privileged port on many systems
Operating systems commonly restrict ports below 1024 to processes with elevated privileges or an appropriate capability. Nginx documentation describes port 80 as the usual default when it can obtain superuser privileges, while an unprivileged process commonly uses a higher port such as 8000. If Nginx runs as a service, its master process normally starts with the privileges needed to bind port 80 and then workers run with reduced privileges. A manually launched, unprivileged Nginx process may fail with a permission error.

Use the service’s normal startup mechanism rather than launching a second copy as an ordinary user. In containers or hardened service units, verify the configured capabilities and port-publishing rules; the host may publish port 80 to a different container port.
Make sure another service is not already listening
Only one process can normally bind the same address and port. A separate web server, an old Nginx instance, a container, or a development tool may already own port 80. Check listeners with the operating-system tool available on your host, such as:
sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':80'
If a service is shown, identify whether it is required. Stop it, move it to another port, or change the Nginx bind address according to your architecture. Do not kill an unknown process on a production server without confirming its role and startup configuration.
Validate the configuration, then reload Nginx
- Run the syntax test:
sudo nginx -t. A successful result reports that the configuration syntax is OK and the test is successful. Treat any error as a stop condition; do not reload until it is fixed. - Reload through the host’s service manager: use the mechanism that manages this Nginx installation. A common systemd command is
sudo systemctl reload nginx; other distributions, containers, control panels, and providers may expose a different command. A reload applies the new configuration while allowing existing workers to finish requests. - Check service status and logs: if the reload fails, inspect the service status and Nginx error log for permission, bind, include-file, certificate, or upstream errors.
- Confirm the listener: run
sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':80'again and verify that Nginx, not an unintended process, owns the port.
A syntax test validates configuration parsing; it does not prove that WordPress is reachable, that PHP-FPM is healthy, or that the correct virtual host answers. Those checks come next.
Verify WordPress without :8080
Use a hostname that resolves to the server, or the server’s IP address when testing an IP-based configuration. Open:
http://example.com/
Do not judge success solely by seeing an Nginx welcome page. Confirm that the expected WordPress site is returned.
- Front page: the correct theme, content, images, and styles load.
- Login:
/wp-login.phpopens and authentication completes without a redirect loop. - Permalinks: open a friendly post or page URL, not only the home page. A 404 usually indicates a missing or altered WordPress Nginx location rule.
- Static assets: browser developer tools should show CSS, JavaScript, fonts, and media loading from the intended hostname and scheme.
- Redirects: check HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior, canonical-host redirects, and any redirects that previously contained
:8080. - Administration: verify that the dashboard, media uploads, scheduled tasks, and REST or admin-ajax requests still function.
If you test by IP address while the server block only matches a domain name, Nginx may select a default block. Test with the real hostname or temporarily use an appropriate host-resolution method that does not alter public DNS.

Standalone Nginx versus reverse proxy
| Aspect | Standalone Nginx | Reverse proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Where the public port changes | The WordPress-serving server {} block changes from listen 8080; to listen 80;. |
The front-end proxy block changes to listen 80;. |
| Where WordPress executes | Nginx serves files and commonly passes PHP scripts to PHP-FPM. | A separate upstream process handles the application request. |
| What happens to port 8080 | It may no longer be needed for the public site unless another service uses it. | The upstream normally remains on 8080; keep proxy_pass pointed there. |
| Headers and scheme | PHP-FPM and the existing FastCGI parameters remain as configured. | Forwarded host, client-IP, and scheme headers must remain consistent with the application. |
| HTTPS termination | Nginx may terminate TLS in its 443 block and serve WordPress directly. | Nginx commonly terminates TLS and forwards HTTP or HTTPS information to the backend. |
| Configuration owner | The server administrator controls Nginx and PHP-FPM settings. | The administrator controls both proxy routing and the upstream service. |
The same principle applies in both layouts: the listen directive controls where Nginx accepts traffic. A reverse proxy adds an independent upstream port that should not be confused with the public one.
WP-CLI’s development server is a different case
WP-CLI documents wp server as a development server that defaults to port 8080 and accepts a different port through --port. If you intentionally run that server and have the necessary permission, the command is:
wp server --port=80
This command does not edit an Nginx server block, change a managed Nginx service, or create a production reverse proxy. It starts WordPress’s built-in development server, with different process ownership, persistence, TLS, and operational characteristics. Use the Nginx procedure for a site managed by Nginx; use the WP-CLI option only when the development server itself is the process you intend to move.
Port 80 privilege restrictions still apply to the WP-CLI process. On a production host, binding a temporary development process to the public HTTP port can also conflict with the existing web server.
Troubleshooting common failures
nginx: [emerg] bind() ...:80 failed
Another process already owns the address, or the Nginx worker lacks permission to bind it. Check the port listener, verify the service’s privileges, and confirm that no second Nginx instance or container is publishing port 80. Resolve ownership before retrying the reload.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Permission denied while binding port 80
Start Nginx through its configured service manager and inspect the service unit, container capability, or security policy. An unprivileged manual process may be allowed to bind 8080 but not 80. Grant only the narrowly required capability or use the platform’s supported port-publishing mechanism rather than weakening unrelated permissions.
The browser still reaches the old site or shows a welcome page
DNS may point elsewhere, the request may use an IP that selects a default server, or the edited file may not be loaded. Compare the hostname’s resolved address with the server, inspect nginx -T, verify the active server_name, and confirm the port-80 listener after reload.
Best Value
The home page works but posts return 404
The port change itself does not provide WordPress rewrites. Restore the existing WordPress location / and fallback behavior, and ensure the correct server block is serving the document root. Do not replace working rewrite rules with generic examples without checking the site’s PHP-FPM and security settings.
Redirects still include :8080
Search Nginx configuration, WordPress’s configured site URLs, application environment settings, and any proxy or load-balancer rules for an explicit port. A listener change cannot remove a literal port embedded in a redirect. Update the layer that generated it, then retest both logged-out and logged-in requests.

Keep the 443 block and certificate configuration unchanged unless the deployment requires a separate TLS change. In a proxy layout, preserve the forwarded scheme header and the application’s trusted-proxy handling. Test HTTP, HTTPS, the canonical hostname, and an authenticated dashboard session separately.
The proxy returns 502 Bad Gateway
Nginx is listening, but it cannot reach the upstream. Confirm that the backend process still listens on its original address and port, that a local firewall or container network has not changed, and that the proxy_pass target matches the running service. Moving the public listener to 80 should not require moving that backend.
Operational checklist
- Identify the loaded WordPress server block with its
server_nameand current listener. - Back up the configuration file or make the change through version-controlled configuration management.
- Change only the public
listenport from 8080 to 80, preserving addresses and parameters. - Keep WordPress locations, PHP-FPM settings, TLS blocks, and rewrite rules intact.
- For a reverse proxy, leave the upstream
proxy_passport at 8080 unless you are deliberately moving the backend too. - Confirm that port 80 is free and that the Nginx service has permission to bind it.
- Run
nginx -tand fix every reported error before reloading. - Reload through the host’s service manager and verify the listener.
- Test the front end, login, permalinks, assets, redirects, HTTPS, and proxy behavior without
:8080. - Monitor logs after the change and keep the rollback copy until normal traffic is confirmed.
Why WordPress itself cannot make this change
WordPress can store site URLs and generate links, but it does not own the Nginx master process or its server-level configuration. Changing the URL in the WordPress dashboard alone will not make Nginx bind port 80. Conversely, changing Nginx alone will not fix an application setting that explicitly generates :8080 links. The listener, proxy, and WordPress URL settings are separate layers and must agree.
For administrators who do not control the web server, a managed WordPress arrangement with Nginx administration may be appropriate; confirm availability, access, and terms with the provider. Whoever controls the Nginx service must perform and validate the port change.
