To rename an Arma Reforger dedicated server, edit the name value inside the game object in that server’s config.json. Save valid JSON, restart the server, and confirm the launch command points to the file you changed. The resulting text is the display name players see in the server browser.

If you host a session through the game instead of running a dedicated server, set the name on the hosting flow’s Settings tab. The procedure below is for a server that reads a JSON configuration file.

The setting that controls the browser name
Arma Reforger’s server configuration uses a nested structure. The display name is not a top-level property; it is the string assigned to game.name. The official Bohemia Interactive community wiki lists name alongside other properties in the game object, including password, passwordAdmin, scenarioId, maxPlayers and visible.
Property names are case-sensitive. Use the lowercase key name exactly as shown. Name, serverName or a top-level name may be ignored by the configuration reader or leave the server with its previous/default name.

}Your real file will normally contain additional properties. Change only the value after name and preserve the surrounding braces, commas and quotation marks.
Before editing: identify the right file
A machine can contain more than one Reforger configuration file—for example, an old copy, a backup and the file used by a service or container. Renaming the wrong copy produces a perfectly valid edit that has no visible effect.

Confirm the file used at launch
Check the command, script or service definition that starts the dedicated server. The launch guide cited for this setting uses a -config flag. The path supplied to that flag is the file to edit. If your startup method does not show the flag directly, inspect the wrapper script or service settings that invoke the server executable.
Make a backup
Copy the current config.json before changing it. Keep the backup outside the location that the server automatically rewrites, and give it a descriptive name such as config-before-name-change.json. A backup lets you restore the previous working configuration if a syntax error is introduced.
Use a plain-text editor
Open the file in an editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Avoid word processors that can insert smart quotation marks, hidden characters or document markup. Preserve the file’s existing encoding and indentation where possible; whitespace is harmless, but changing punctuation is not.

Change the dedicated-server name step by step
1. Open config.json
Open the exact file referenced by the server’s -config launch argument. If the server is currently running, stop it before editing so that a management tool or shutdown routine cannot overwrite your change. If you cannot find a game object, do not create a second competing setting immediately; first check whether you opened an older-format file or the wrong path.

Search for the JSON property "game". Inside its opening and closing braces, locate the property spelled "name". In a larger configuration it may appear near passwords, the scenario identifier, player capacity or visibility settings. The nesting matters: the desired property is game.name.
3. Replace only the string value
Keep the key and colon unchanged, then replace the text between the quotation marks. For example, change:

}The example name follows the “Server Name – Mission Name” style shown in the wiki’s example. You may use another naming convention; the important part is that the value remains a JSON string.
4. Check punctuation around the property
If another property follows name, retain the comma after the closing quote. If name is the final property in the game object, remove any comma that would otherwise be trailing. JSON does not allow a comma immediately before a closing brace.

5. Save the file
Save over the file identified by the launch configuration. If your editor offers multiple formats, choose plain JSON or plain text, not a document format. Close and reopen the file once to verify that the saved value is still present and that quotation marks were not converted.
Validate the JSON before starting the server
Reforger’s configuration is parsed as JSON. Strict parsers reject comments and trailing commas, and either error can prevent startup. A name edit can therefore expose a syntax problem even though the text looks visually correct.
Use Python’s built-in checker
From a command prompt or terminal, run the following in the directory containing the file:
python -m json.tool config.jsonIf the file is elsewhere, supply its full or relative path instead. A successful run prints formatted JSON. A failure reports a line and column; return to that location in the editor and inspect missing quotation marks, braces, brackets, commas or comments.
What valid JSON permits
- Property names and string values enclosed in straight double quotation marks.
- Commas between properties, but not after the final property in an object.
- Nested objects enclosed by matching braces.
- Ordinary spaces and line breaks for readability.
What to remove
- Comment lines such as
// name of serveror/* ... */. - Trailing commas such as
"name": "Operations",immediately before}. - Smart quotes copied from formatted text.
- Unescaped quotation marks inside the name itself. If a name must contain a quote character, use valid JSON escaping rather than inserting a second unescaped quote.
Do not “fix” an error by deleting unrelated settings. Restore the backup if necessary, then make the smallest possible correction and run the checker again.

Restart and verify the active configuration
Restart the server process
Stop the dedicated server cleanly, then start it again with the same command or service definition. The available guidance treats a restart as necessary for the edited name to be read; do not assume a running process reloads config.json automatically.
Make sure the restart used the edited file
Confirm that the startup command still contains the expected -config path and that no environment-specific override points to another file. This is the most important check when the JSON validator reports success but the browser still shows the old name.

After the process is running, open the Multiplayer server browser and search for the exact new text. The name is a display label, so capitalization and punctuation matter when you search. If the server does not appear immediately, first verify that it is running and visible according to its existing configuration; then recheck the file path and restart rather than editing several settings at once.

Dedicated-server JSON is not involved when you create a hosted session through Arma Reforger’s in-game flow. In the official Boot Camp instructions, the host enters the server name on the Settings tab. Players then locate the session by searching that name from the Multiplayer page.
- Open the game’s hosting flow.
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Enter the desired server name in the name field.
- Start the hosted session.
- Have players search for that text on the Multiplayer page.
Use this menu-based procedure for a temporary or in-game host. Use config.json when a dedicated server process is launched from a command, script or service.
Troubleshooting a name that does not change

When a restart appears ineffective
Read the file again after stopping the process. If the new value has reverted, another tool may be regenerating the configuration, or you may be editing a copy rather than the managed file. Preserve the generated file, locate the configuration source used by your launch method, and apply the change there.

json.tool checks syntax, not whether every setting is supported by your particular server build. Restore the backup to confirm that the failure is associated with the edit, then reapply only the name change. Do not add comments or extra properties while diagnosing the issue.
Older configuration layouts need extra care
Some older community guides show a flat arrangement with keys such as gameHostBindAddress and adminPassword, rather than the nested game object used in the current wiki example. A file with that appearance may belong to an older server version, an older guide or a different configuration format.
Do not copy a modern fragment into an older file—or move every old key into a new structure—without checking the documentation for the server version you actually run. First establish which executable and configuration path are active. Then compare that version’s expected schema. If the documentation shows the nested game layout, use game.name; if it documents another layout, follow that version’s schema rather than guessing.
Regardless of layout, retain a backup and validate the final file. A syntactically valid file can still be incompatible with a server that expects different property names, so version-specific documentation is the authority when the structures differ.
Name length and practical naming choices
The official configuration excerpt does not specify a maximum name length. One third-party guide reports a range of 0–100 characters, but that limit is not confirmed by the official excerpt. Treat it as a guide rather than a guarantee, and verify the behavior on your server version before relying on a boundary value.
Make the browser label recognizable
- Put the community, event or server identity first if players will search for it.
- Add the mission or rotation after a separator, following the wiki’s “Server Name – Mission Name” example.
- Keep capitalization consistent with the name you communicate to players.
- Avoid unnecessary punctuation while troubleshooting so that an exact search is easy.
The value is a display string; it does not replace the server’s account or backend registration identifiers. Change only the display property required for the browser label.
