What the MOTD files control
Left 4 Dead 2 uses more than one text file for information shown to connecting players. Editing the wrong file is the most common reason a change appears to have no effect.

The dedicated-server documentation distinguishes host.txt from motd.txt: the former controls the banner, while the latter controls the principal welcome content. A server can therefore have the correct text in one file and still show an unchanged message if players are looking at the other area.
Before editing: stop safely and make a backup
Stop the dedicated server before changing files, or use your hosting panel’s file manager if it provides a safe offline-editing workflow. A running process may overwrite a file, retain an old configuration in memory, or make it difficult to tell whether a restart actually loaded your changes.

- Save a copy of the existing
motd.txtunder a different name before replacing it. - Back up
server.cfgbefore adding a setting, especially if the file already contains custom commands. - Keep the original
host.txtif you only intend to change the main MOTD. - Use the exact game-directory path shown by your server installation or host panel; do not assume that a similarly named local client folder is the dedicated server’s data directory.
Change the MOTD on a traditional dedicated server
1. Open the game-directory file manager
Use SSH, a local file browser, or the host’s file manager and open the directory containing the dedicated server’s Left 4 Dead 2 files. The target file is:
left4dead2/motd.txt
Do not put the file in left4dead2/cfg. The cfg directory is where configuration files such as server.cfg live; the MOTD file itself is directly under left4dead2.

2. Replace the default content
Open motd.txt in a plain-text editor. Remove the default URL or replace the existing content with your own. The documented format supports two approaches:
- Inline content: place the HTML code directly in
motd.txt. - Hosted content: put the URL of a hosted HTML page on a single line at the top of the text file.
The Steam Community dedicated-server guide describes the choice this way: “The MOTD section is the same as the host banner – it can be either a hosted HTML file (place the URL on a single line in the top of the .txt file) or you can just put the HTML code directly into the text file.”
For a simple server notice, inline HTML keeps all required content with the server. A hosted page lets you update the page without repeatedly editing the server file, but it introduces a dependency on the page being reachable and on the game client accepting the returned content. Whichever method you choose, keep the file limited to the content you intend players to read and verify that the URL, if used, occupies its own line at the top.
3. Enable the MOTD in server.cfg
Open:
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg
Add this line if your server accepts the principal cvar spelling documented by the dedicated-server how-to sources:

motd_enable 1
Save the file without changing the spelling or placing the command inside another configuration block. The setting belongs in server.cfg, not in motd.txt.
4. Treat cvar spelling as a compatibility check
Most of the procedural documentation uses motd_enable 1. A separate command-reference search result reports a spelling with an extra “d”: motd_enabled. These should not be assumed to be universally interchangeable. Game branches, plugin layers, and documentation versions can expose different cvar names.
Start with the spelling your server’s own console recognizes. After the server loads, query or set the cvar in the console and watch for an “unknown command” or similar error. If motd_enable is rejected, consult the command list for that exact server build and use the accepted name rather than leaving two speculative settings in the configuration.

5. Save, restart, and reconnect
Save both files, start or restart the server, and connect again as a player. Fragnet’s instructions explicitly require a start or restart before checking the result. A client that was already connected may not reload the MOTD simply because the file changed on disk, so disconnect and reconnect after the server has completed its restart.

This is a deployment choice, not a different MOTD setting. Both methods still use motd.txt, require the MOTD enable cvar, and need a server restart before verification.
Docker deployments
Left4DevOps’ Docker documentation describes a separate configuration model. It supports enabling or disabling MOTD display, supplying simple content through MOTD-related configuration, and mounting files for more complex content.

Simple Docker content
For a short notice, the Docker configuration can provide content through its MOTD settings. The documented variables distinguish the host banner from the main MOTD:
HOST_CONTENTsupplies the host-banner content. It may be plain text or an HTTP URL.MOTD_CONTENTsupplies the content shown when a player views the MOTD.
Use the variable that corresponds to the area you want to change. Setting host content does not automatically replace the main MOTD content.
Mounted Docker files
For complex or reusable content, the Docker documentation specifies mounts for:
/motd/host.txtfor the host banner./motd/motd.txtfor the main MOTD.
With mounts, edit the files on the host side that are mapped to those container paths, then recreate or restart the container according to your deployment process. Ensure the container receives the updated files and that MOTD display is enabled in the container’s configuration. If the container starts successfully but players still see old content, inspect the mounted-file mapping first; a correctly edited host file is ineffective if it is mounted at the wrong path.

The file is in the wrong directory
Confirm that the main file is exactly left4dead2/motd.txt, not left4dead2/cfg/motd.txt. The configuration directory is for server.cfg; placing the MOTD there leaves the game looking at a different file.

The MOTD is disabled
Open left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg and confirm that the accepted enable cvar is present with a value of 1. If the console reports that motd_enable is unknown, check the server’s own command output for the branch or plugin-specific spelling instead of assuming that motd_enabled will work everywhere.
The server was not restarted
A file edit alone is not a complete deployment. Start or restart the server, wait for it to finish loading, and reconnect. Testing from an existing connection can show stale content even when the file is correct.
You changed the banner instead of the MOTD
Check which area is unchanged. A narrow host banner is controlled by host.txt; the main welcome page is controlled by motd.txt. Edit the corresponding file rather than replacing both files unnecessarily.
The hosted page cannot be loaded
If motd.txt contains a URL, verify that the URL is on a single line at the top of the file and that the page is reachable. Review the dedicated-server console for file or HTML errors. Switching temporarily to a small inline HTML message is a useful isolation test: if inline content appears after a restart, the file path and enable setting are working and the hosted-page configuration needs attention.
The content itself is malformed
When using inline HTML, inspect the file for accidental extra characters, an incomplete tag, or text placed before the intended markup. Keep a minimal backup message available and test with that simpler content first. Once the minimal version displays, add the rest of the page incrementally so a formatting error can be identified without changing several variables at once.
A Docker mount or variable points to the wrong target
In a container deployment, verify whether you configured HOST_CONTENT or MOTD_CONTENT, and whether a mounted file maps to /motd/host.txt or /motd/motd.txt. A host-banner setting cannot populate the main MOTD, and an edited file outside the active mount is invisible to the running container. Check the container’s effective configuration and restart it after changing mounts or environment values.
Choosing an implementation

Final verification checklist
- The main content is in
left4dead2/motd.txt. - The host banner, if changed, is in the separate

left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgand matches the spelling accepted by this server. - A URL, if used, occupies a single line at the top of
motd.txt. - The server or Docker container was restarted after the edit.
- You disconnected and reconnected before judging the result.
- The server console shows no unknown-cvar, file, or HTML errors.
Following those checks separates the three independent parts of the setup: the content file, the enable setting, and the restart that makes the running server load both.
