The language in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is usually controlled by the console, not a universal setting inside the game. On Nintendo Switch, go to HOME Menu > System Settings > System > Language, select a supported language, and allow the console to restart. In the European/Australian Nintendo 3DS release of Ocarina of Time 3D, the game follows the 3DS system language and supports English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. N64 and Virtual Console editions vary by region, so identify your exact release before applying either procedure.
First, identify which release you are playing
There is no single language menu that works across every version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Nintendo released the game on different hardware, in different regions, and with different language-support rules. The correct fix depends on whether you have Ocarina of Time 3D on Nintendo 3DS, a Switch-family version, an original Nintendo 64 cartridge, or a Virtual Console edition.

If you are unsure, check the title shown on the software icon, the console on which you are playing, and the region of the cartridge or digital purchase. A 3DS cartridge, a Switch-family release and a European Wii U Virtual Console title should not be treated as interchangeable editions.

How to change the language on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 support guidance says that game or application language defaults to the language selected on the console so long as the software supports that language. Therefore, the procedure has two parts: change the system language, then confirm that your particular Ocarina of Time release includes it.

Change the console language
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll down and select System.
- Select Language.
- Choose the language you want to try.
- Confirm the change when the console asks.
- Let the console restart, then launch the game again.
Nintendo says that changing this setting restarts the console and closes suspended software. Save or close any other game before confirming, because a suspended application will not remain open through the restart.
Check whether the game supports that language
The system setting is only a request to the software. Switch software can fall back to another language, commonly English, if the title does not include the selected language. Check the supported-language information for the exact release and region shown in the Nintendo eShop or the product information supplied with your copy. Do not assume that a language available in one regional edition of Ocarina of Time is available in another.
If the game does not change after the restart
- Close the game completely rather than returning to it from a suspended state, then launch it again.
- Confirm that the new language is still selected under System Settings > System > Language.
- Verify that the game software supports that language. Nintendo’s rule is conditional on software support, not simply on the console having that language available.
- Check the game’s region and edition. A regional release can have a different language list from another release with the same title.
Repeatedly changing the Switch language will not add translations that are absent from the game. If the supported-language information does not include your choice, the console setting cannot force the missing text or voices into the software.

The European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D manual states: “The in-game language depends on the one that is set on the system.” In that release, the supported choices are English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.
Set the 3DS system language
- Exit the game and open the Nintendo 3DS System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Open the system-language setting using the path described in the 3DS system manual.
- Select English, German, French, Spanish or Italian.
- Confirm the change and allow the 3DS to apply it.
- Start Ocarina of Time 3D again and check the title screen and game text.
The game manual directs players to the 3DS system manual for the exact setting path. Menu wording can differ slightly between 3DS system-language versions, so use the system settings rather than searching inside the game’s save screen.

What happens with an unsupported 3DS language
If the 3DS is set to a language outside those five documented choices, the European/Australian release displays English. That behavior is a fallback, not an indication that the console failed to save your setting. For example, selecting a system language that is not in the game’s list will leave the game in English even though the 3DS itself uses your selected language elsewhere.
Do not use the save-screen Options menu for this
The Options area reached from the game’s save screen is for gameplay controls and camera options. It is not a general language selector in the documented 3DS release. If you are looking for a language entry there, you will not find one; change the 3DS system language instead.

What is known about Nintendo 64 and Virtual Console versions
Language support is more dependent on region and edition for the Nintendo 64 original and later Virtual Console releases. Nintendo Germany’s product information lists English, French and German for its European Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console and Wii U Virtual Console versions. That list confirms that European editions are not necessarily identical to releases sold elsewhere.
The available documentation does not establish one language-setting procedure that applies to every N64 cartridge, Wii Virtual Console title and Wii U Virtual Console title. The accessible North American N64 manual also does not provide searchable text sufficient to confirm a language procedure. Consequently, do not apply the 3DS or Switch steps as if they were universal.
Before changing anything on an N64 or Virtual Console copy
- Identify the hardware: original Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console or Wii U Virtual Console.
- Identify the release region from the cartridge label, console account or product listing.
- Look for language information in the manual or the official product page for that specific edition.
- Check the title’s own menus only after confirming which edition you have; an option present in one release may not exist in another.
If your European copy is listed as supporting English, French and German, those are the documented choices for that listing. A different regional cartridge or emulated release may have a different implementation, so a setting path copied from another platform is not reliable evidence for yours.

Why is Ocarina of Time still in English?
English usually remains on screen for one of four reasons: the selected system language is unsupported by the game, the console language change was not applied, the software was resumed instead of relaunched, or the copy is a different regional edition from the one whose language list you consulted.

The system language is not supported
This is explicitly documented for the European/Australian 3DS release: any system language outside English, German, French, Spanish and Italian falls back to English. The Switch follows the same basic principle of conditional support, although the supported list must be checked for the particular Switch-family software.
The console was not restarted or the game was suspended
On Switch, Nintendo says the language change restarts the console and closes suspended software. If you postponed the restart or returned to a suspended game, close the software and start it after the system has restarted. The game reads the console language when it initializes; changing the setting while it is already running may not update its text.
You changed a setting inside the wrong menu
Ocarina of Time 3D does not use its save-screen Options menu for language selection. A setting there cannot change the game’s text. Return to the 3DS System Settings instead.
Your copy is from another region
Language lists are tied to releases, not just to the game’s name. The European Nintendo 64 and Virtual Console listings document English, French and German, while the European/Australian 3DS manual documents five languages. Those differences are enough to show why a language guide for one edition cannot be generalized to every cartridge or download.

Does changing the Switch language change the game language?
It can, but only when the specific software supports the selected language. Nintendo’s Switch support wording is conditional: software defaults to the console language “so long as the intended language is supported by the game or software application.” The setting changes the console; it does not translate software that was released without that language.
Use this decision sequence:
- Set the Switch language under System Settings > System > Language.
- Allow the restart and close any suspended software.
- Launch the game again.
- If the language is unchanged, check the supported-language information for your exact release and region.
- If the language is not listed, restore the console language you prefer for the rest of the system; changing it again will not add unsupported game text.
Can you change only the game language?
For the documented 3DS release, no separate in-game language switch is provided; the game follows the 3DS system language. On Switch, the documented method is also a console-level language change, subject to software support. That means the system interface and other applications may change at the same time. If you need the rest of the console to remain in its current language, first verify whether your particular game edition offers an independent language menu; the documentation here does not establish one for these releases.
Language support, region and edition: why they matter
Three labels help prevent most mistakes:
Platform
A Nintendo 3DS cartridge, an original N64 cartridge and a Switch-family application can use entirely different language rules. Instructions for one platform should not be treated as a general solution.
Region
The European/Australian 3DS manual and Nintendo Germany’s European product listings describe specific regional releases. Their language lists are useful for those editions, but they do not prove that North American, Japanese or other regional versions have the same choices.
Edition
Even on the same platform, a physical cartridge, a Virtual Console release and another digital edition can have different menus or supported languages. Read the language information attached to the exact edition rather than relying on the title alone.
A practical checklist
- 3DS, European/Australian Ocarina of Time 3D: set the 3DS to English, German, French, Spanish or Italian in System Settings; the game follows that choice.
- 3DS set to another language: expect English in that documented release.
- Switch-family software: use System Settings > System > Language, restart, then verify that the game supports the selected language.
- N64 or Virtual Console: identify region and edition first; do not assume that the 3DS or Switch procedure applies.
- Game still in English: check support, region, restart status and whether you changed the system setting rather than an unrelated in-game Options menu.
What the official documentation actually establishes
The European/Australian Nintendo 3DS manual gives the clearest version-specific rule: “The in-game language depends on the one that is set on the system.” It also lists the five supported languages and documents English as the fallback when another system language is selected.
Nintendo Support’s Switch and Switch 2 guidance provides the corresponding platform rule: a game or software application defaults to the console’s selected language when the intended language is supported by that software. Together, these statements explain why changing the console setting is the right first step on modern systems, while also explaining why it cannot guarantee a translation for every release.
For N64 and Virtual Console editions, the documented European listings establish English, French and German availability but do not provide a single procedure covering every cartridge and emulated version. Treat those releases as edition-specific rather than assuming a universal language menu.
Bottom line
There is no universal Ocarina of Time language switch. Set the console language for the version you own: on Switch, use System Settings > System > Language and restart; on the European/Australian 3DS release, use the 3DS system settings and choose one of its five documented languages. If the game remains in English, the selected language is probably unsupported by that edition, or you are using a different regional release whose rules must be checked separately.
