What the setting changes
playerHungerSpeed is a world-configuration multiplier for the rate at which a player’s hunger bar decreases. It changes hunger pace, not the amount or type of food in the game. Because it is stored with the world save, it is a world-level setting rather than a general server preference that automatically applies to every save.

The setting is independent of foodSpoilSpeed. Changing hunger speed does not change how quickly perishable food spoils, and changing spoilage speed does not alter how quickly a player becomes hungry. Keep those settings separate when balancing a survival economy.
Change hunger on an existing world
Before you run the command
- Use an account with administrator privileges or access to the server console.
- Identify the specific world or save you intend to modify, especially if the server hosts more than one world.
- Check that the server is running the world whose configuration you want to change.
- Plan a reload or restart, because the new world configuration may not be active until the world is reloaded.
Run the worldconfig command
- Open the server console, or open in-game chat while logged in as an administrator.
- Enter the command exactly as shown, including capitalization:
/worldconfig playerHungerSpeed <multiplier> - Replace
<multiplier>with a number from0through10. For example, to halve the documented default pace, enter:/worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 0.5 - Reload the world. A full server restart is the safer application method when you can schedule one.
- Reconnect and observe the hunger bar during normal play to confirm that the intended world was changed.
The property name is case sensitive. playerHungerSpeed is not interchangeable with lowercase, uppercase, or differently spaced versions. A Vintage Story forum response dated September 13, 2024 summarized the required syntax as /worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 1.0 and specifically warned that the command is case sensitive and requires admin privileges.

Understand the multiplier

The multiplier describes the intended relative pace. The table’s examples are arithmetic interpretations of the multiplier, not separate game modes. Your server version, reload state, and the world you edited determine when the change becomes visible.
Choose a value for your server
Slower hunger for building and exploration
Choose a value below 1 when players spend long periods traveling, mining, constructing, or learning the game and the normal food schedule interrupts those activities too often. A value such as 0.5 is an easy starting point because it clearly reduces the pace while preserving hunger as a survival mechanic. Make one change at a time, then let players experience a complete play session before adjusting again.

Use 1 when you want the documented standard multiplier. This is also the simplest rollback value if an experiment makes the food economy feel wrong or if a previous administrator changed the setting and nobody knows what it was.

Increase pressure for a challenge world
Choose a value above 1 when food production and regular meals should be more urgent. Start with a moderate increase rather than jumping directly to the upper bound. A faster hunger rate can make long journeys and early-game progression substantially less forgiving, so tell players about the change before applying it to a shared save.

These are gameplay trade-offs rather than additional server settings. The command changes the hunger multiplier only; it does not automatically rebalance crops, recipes, storage, or spoilage.
Can you change hunger after the world has started?
Yes. For an existing world, use /worldconfig from the server console or administrator chat. World settings are saved with the world, so changing a general serverconfig.json file is not the reliable method for altering the hunger setting of a save that already exists.

After entering the command, reload the world and preferably restart the server. A restart also gives you a clear point at which every player reconnects to the updated save. If your hosting control panel has separate stop, save, and start controls, follow that provider’s required order so the world is closed cleanly before it is started again.
New-world and hosting-panel workflows
Some managed hosting panels expose a WorldConfiguration field when you create a new Vintage Story world. If the panel provides a field for playerHungerSpeed, set the multiplier during world creation and use the panel’s documented stop/save/start workflow. The exact labels and controls vary by host, so do not assume that a panel field changes an already-created save unless the panel explicitly says it does.
When the panel and the live world disagree
For a world that already exists, the live /worldconfig command is the priority path. A panel may display a template or creation-time value while the save itself retains another value. Stop the server if the panel requires it, make the world change through the supported console or chat command, save or reload as required, and then start the server again.

Do not confuse a template with a save
A server-wide configuration file can be useful when a host is preparing a new world, but it is not a dependable substitute for the world configuration command on an established save. Editing the wrong file can leave the running world unchanged while making the panel appear correctly configured.

- Check the command response for an error indicating a permission, syntax, or value problem.
- Confirm that the command targeted the intended world and not another save or a different server instance.
- Reload the world, then restart the server if the first reload does not visibly apply the change.
- Reconnect a player and watch the hunger bar under ordinary activity rather than immediately judging it from a single moment.
- Compare the observed pace with the multiplier you selected: a value below
1should be slower than the default, while a value above1should be faster.
If your server version supports querying /worldconfig without supplying a value, run that query to display the current setting and verify the stored value. Query support can vary by server version, so do not treat the absence of a response as proof that the command failed.
Troubleshoot a setting that did not change
The server rejects the command
- Permission: Log in as an administrator or run the command from the server console. Ordinary players cannot use an administrator-only world configuration command.
- Capitalization: Re-enter
playerHungerSpeedexactly. The property name is case sensitive. - Range: Use a value from
0to10. Values outside that documented range can be rejected or fail to produce the intended result. - Syntax: Keep the slash, property name, and multiplier separated by spaces:
/worldconfig playerHungerSpeed 0.5.
The command succeeds but players see no difference
- Reload the world and restart the server. The change may not be applied to active sessions until the world is reloaded.
- Confirm that you edited the save currently being played. Multi-world servers and hosting panels can make it easy to modify one world while players are connected to another.
- Use the no-value query form if your server version supports it, then compare the displayed value with the one you intended.
- Check that another administrator or startup script did not restore an older value during a restart.
- Allow enough ordinary play time to see the rate difference. A single hunger-bar reading cannot establish whether the multiplier is active.
The food economy seems wrong after the change
First confirm that you changed playerHungerSpeed, not foodSpoilSpeed. Hunger pace and perishable-food spoilage are separate controls. If hunger is too slow or too fast for the community, change the multiplier again rather than editing spoilage settings to compensate; document the new value so players know which rule changed.
Safely experiment and roll back
Make adjustments during a maintenance window, announce the intended value, and keep a short record of the previous multiplier. Test a proposed value on a copy or low-stakes world when possible. If the result is unsuitable, run the same command with the prior value; use 1 to restore the documented default when no earlier value is known.
Changing the multiplier does not require recreating the world. The important safeguards are selecting the correct save, using administrator access, staying within the documented range, and completing the reload or restart. A rollback is therefore a configuration change, not a migration.
