If Chrome’s built-in autofill suggestion looks too large or small when you hover over it, a SitePoint forum workaround targets the autofilled input’s first line: input:-webkit-autofill::first-line { font-size: 18px; }. One forum poster reported that the rule worked for them, but the responder cautioned that it is not guaranteed across browsers. Treat it as a browser-specific workaround and test it in the versions you support.
Try the reported CSS workaround
In a 2021 SitePoint discussion, the original poster wanted the text to stay at 18px both while hovering over a Chrome autofill suggestion and after selecting it. Their existing font-size rules for input:-webkit-autofill states did not change the hovered suggestion’s appearance.

PaulOB suggested targeting the first line of the autofilled input:

font-size: 18px;
}
The forum answer used 24px; the original poster’s goal was 18px. Replace the value with the size you want. The poster replied that the suggestion worked for them, but PaulOB added, “It’s not guaranteed to work everywhere.” That is a report from one discussion, not a cross-browser guarantee.

Why styling autofill may not change the hovered suggestion
The browser’s suggestion menu and the value displayed in an autofilled input are separate visual states. MDN describes :autofill as matching an input after the browser has filled its value; it stops matching when the user edits the field. MDN also identifies :-webkit-autofill as an alias.
Consequently, rules for input:-webkit-autofill can address the autofilled input state without necessarily controlling how the browser draws a suggestion in its menu while the pointer hovers over it. MDN notes that :autofill has limited availability and that browser user-agent styles may use !important, which can prevent author CSS from overriding some autofill properties.

How to check whether it works for your site
- Add the
::first-linerule to your stylesheet and setfont-sizeto the size you need. - Test the browser’s built-in autofill suggestion menu in each browser and version you support, checking both the hovered suggestion and the value after selection.
- If the hovered suggestion still uses a different size, do not assume that another rule for
:autofillwill control the menu; the forum workaround is not guaranteed outside the reported case.
