Google Pixel phones do not have a documented system-wide graphic equalizer with global bass and treble sliders. Google’s Pixel sound controls instead cover separate volume channels, ringtone and notification sounds, vibration, Adaptive Sound for the built-in speaker, Clear Calling, Spatial Audio, and accessibility listening tools. If you need EQ bands, use the equalizer in your music app or the companion settings for your headphones; those controls may affect only that app or accessory, not every sound produced by the phone.
This guide shows where each Pixel audio control lives, what it changes, which Pixel generations support it, and how to choose the right setting for the speaker, a call, headphones, or a Bluetooth device.

Where are audio settings on a Pixel phone?
Most sound controls are in Settings > Sound & vibration. You can also reach the main volume categories quickly by pressing a volume button and opening the expanded panel with the menu or More control beside the slider. Google notes that labels and steps can vary by device and Android version. The official starting point is Google’s Pixel volume, sound and vibration help page.

| Slider | Controls | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| Media | Playback volume | Music, video, games and podcasts |
| Call | In-call receiver volume | The person you are speaking with during a phone call |
| Ring | Incoming-call ringtone level | Your selected ringtone |
| Notification | Alerts from apps and the system | Messages, email and other notifications |
| Alarm | Clock alarm level | Scheduled alarms |
When more than one Bluetooth audio device is paired, the media area can also let you choose where playback goes. Check the selected output before troubleshooting a quiet phone speaker: audio may still be routed to earbuds, a car system or another paired device.
Change a ringtone, notification sound or vibration behavior
In Settings > Sound & vibration, choose the ringtone, default notification sound or alarm sound, then adjust the related volume slider. The same area contains vibration and haptic options. These controls change the sound or feedback used for calls and alerts; they are not an equalizer and do not reshape music.
For a quick diagnosis, play a video while the volume panel is open and identify the highlighted slider. Then place a test call or trigger a notification and adjust the category that actually controls that event. This avoids raising media volume when the real issue is a muted ringtone or notification channel.

How do I change the equalizer, bass or treble on a Pixel?
Google’s current Pixel volume, listening and Spatial Audio documentation does not show a system-wide EQ screen or global bass-and-treble controls. That means there is no Google-documented Settings path such as “Settings > Sound > Equalizer” that reliably changes every app, ringtone and call.
For bass, treble or frequency-band adjustments, open the audio app you actually use and look for its playback, audio or equalizer controls. A separate EQ may be available in the settings app supplied with your headphones, USB-C audio adapter or other accessory. The effect is determined by that app or accessory: an in-app EQ can be limited to that app, while a headphone EQ can apply only when those headphones process the signal. The Google pages cited here do not establish a universal, system-wide effect, so test the route you use instead of assuming that one adjustment changes all phone audio.
A safe way to test an app or accessory EQ
- Start playback in the app or connect the accessory you want to use.
- Open that app’s audio settings, or open the companion app for the connected headphones or adapter.
- Change one band or preset at a time, then compare the result with the original setting at the same volume.
- Switch to another app or to the phone speaker. If the sound returns to its original character, the EQ was local to the first app or accessory.
Avoid treating a louder result as a better EQ result. Raise the phone’s media volume separately only after you have selected the desired tonal balance, and reduce the level if boosted bass or treble causes distortion.
Some players offer presets such as bass boost, vocal or rock rather than individual bands. Those presets are still app-level processing. If you use several music services, check each one separately. Likewise, a headphone companion app may save a profile in the headphones, but the profile can disappear when you switch to a different headset or use the phone speaker.

How to make the built-in Pixel speaker sound better
Turn on Adaptive Sound
Adaptive Sound is Google’s environment-aware speaker feature. Google describes it as adjusting “speaker output from your phone to best fit your environment, without changing the volume.” It is intended for the phone’s own speaker rather than for headphones.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sound & vibration.
- Tap Adaptive Sound.
- Turn on Use Adaptive Sound (the exact switch wording can vary).
Adaptive Sound changes the speaker output to suit the surrounding environment; it does not raise the volume slider. It does not apply when sound is playing through headphones or an external speaker, so it will not tune a Bluetooth speaker or wired headset.
Check compatibility before looking for the switch
Google lists Adaptive Sound for Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10, including Fold models. Availability also requires current Android software and the latest Android System Intelligence app. A phone outside that model range, an outdated system component or a different software build may not show the control. Update Android and system apps, restart the phone, and check the Sound & vibration menu again if the setting is missing. Google’s compatibility and behavior details are in the Pixel sound-settings documentation and Google’s Pixel listening guide.
What Adaptive Sound can and cannot fix
- It can: alter the built-in speaker’s output for the environment without changing the displayed volume.
- It cannot: supply a general bass-and-treble editor, tune headphones, or change the output of an external speaker.
- It may not: appear on unsupported models or software versions.
Because the feature responds to surroundings, compare it in the same room and at the same volume before deciding whether it helps. It is an environment adjustment, not a replacement for a damaged speaker, blocked grille or distorted recording.
How to make phone calls clearer with Clear Calling
Clear Calling is a call-focused setting, not a music equalizer. On Pixel 7 and later, including Fold models, open Settings > Sound & vibration > Clear Calling and enable Use Clear Calling.
Google says availability depends on call bandwidth, so the option may not be available on every call even on a supported phone. A missing or inactive control can therefore reflect the network or the current call rather than a fault with the handset. Clear Calling is designed for voice intelligibility; it does not change your music, video or ringtone tonal balance.
Test it during an ordinary cellular call rather than judging it from a music clip. If the call changes from Wi-Fi calling to cellular, or the available bandwidth changes, the control may behave differently. The setting is intended to help conversation clarity, not to increase the other person’s volume beyond the call-volume slider.

How to enable Spatial Audio on a Pixel
Spatial Audio is an immersive playback mode with requirements that differ from Adaptive Sound. On a supported device, open Settings > Sound & vibration > Spatial audio. Google also documents opening the expanded volume panel and enabling Spatial Audio there. The switch may be unavailable when the phone, content or output route does not meet the requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Spatial Audio requirements
| Factor | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Phone software | Install the latest Android software; Google specifically advises checking this before using Spatial Audio. |
| Content | Movies and shows need a 5.1-or-higher audio track for the supported content experience. |
| Output device | Support varies by built-in speaker, wired connection, Bluetooth device and Pixel Buds configuration. |
| Head tracking | Pixel Buds Pro head tracking requires current firmware. |
| Built-in speaker | Google lists the Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 family and Pixel Tablet for built-in-speaker Spatial Audio. |
Spatial Audio is therefore not a universal “better sound” switch. It is an output-and-content feature: a supported movie on a supported route may sound more enveloping, while ordinary stereo music or an unsupported device may not provide the same result. See Google’s Spatial Audio support page for the current compatibility details.
Turn Spatial Audio on from Settings
- Install available Android and device-firmware updates.
- Open Settings > Sound & vibration.
- Tap Spatial audio.
- Turn it on, then start supported content through the intended speaker or headphones.
- If the option is missing, open the expanded volume panel and check whether Spatial Audio is offered for the current output.
Changing output from headphones to the phone speaker, or switching to content without a qualifying multichannel track, can remove the option. That behavior reflects the feature’s compatibility rules rather than an EQ setting being reset.
Spatial Audio and Adaptive Sound solve different problems. Adaptive Sound changes the phone speaker for the surrounding environment and does not apply to headphones or external speakers. Spatial Audio creates an immersive effect only for supported content and routes, and head tracking adds another firmware and accessory requirement. Do not enable one expecting the other to change bass or treble.
Accessibility controls for hearing conversations
Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode are separate from music EQ. They are designed to make nearby speech easier to hear and provide listening adjustments for accessibility.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Open Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Sound Amplifier.
- Choose Conversation mode when you want to focus on the person speaking with you.
Google documents Conversation mode on Pixel 3 and later, including Fold models. It can focus on the conversation partner and reduce other surrounding noise. Sound Amplifier also provides noise reduction and sliders for quiet sounds and high or low frequencies. Those frequency controls are listening aids within Sound Amplifier; they are not global bass and treble controls for music, ringtones or every app.
Use the on-screen controls while the conversation is happening, then return to the regular Sound & vibration settings when you want to change ordinary media or alert behavior. Details and model information are available in Google’s Pixel listening and accessibility guidance.

Choose the right setting for your listening goal
| Goal | Use | Works on | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change music loudness | Media volume in the expanded volume panel | Current playback route | Does not change bass or treble. |
| Improve the phone speaker in changing surroundings | Adaptive Sound | Supported Pixel 4a (5G) through Pixel 10 models, including Fold, with current software | Phone speaker only; not headphones or external speakers. |
| Make a supported call easier to understand | Clear Calling | Pixel 7 and later, including Fold | Call bandwidth can determine whether it is available. |
| Make supported video playback more immersive | Spatial Audio | Supported Pixel, content and output combinations | Content, model, firmware and route requirements apply. |
| Focus on a nearby speaker | Accessibility > Sound Amplifier > Conversation mode | Pixel 3 and later, including Fold | Accessibility listening tool, not a system music EQ. |
| Adjust frequency bands | EQ in the specific app or accessory settings | Depends on that app or accessory | May not affect other apps or output routes. |
No purchase is required for any of the phone settings above. Wired USB-C headphones, Bluetooth headphones, Pixel Buds Pro or an external speaker are optional output choices. Made by Google and Made for Google headphones are certified to work with Pixel, but certification does not turn an accessory EQ into a global phone EQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a Pixel that sounds wrong
The phone speaker is quiet or thin
- Press a volume button, expand the panel and confirm you changed Media, not Ring, Notification or Alarm.
- Check the output selector for a connected Bluetooth device. Disconnect it temporarily to test the built-in speaker.
- Turn on Adaptive Sound if your model and software support it.
- Try the same clip in another app. If only one app sounds different, inspect that app’s own audio settings and EQ.
- Check that the recording itself is not mixed quietly or heavily compressed. A single clip is not a reliable test of the phone’s speaker.
The EQ changed music but not calls or notifications
This is expected when the control belongs to a music app or headphone companion app. Pixel’s documented system controls separate media, calls, ring, notifications and alarms, and Google does not document a global graphic EQ. Adjust the relevant volume category or sound choice instead.
Adaptive Sound, Clear Calling or Spatial Audio is missing
- Install current Android updates and restart the phone.
- For Adaptive Sound, verify the phone is within Google’s Pixel 4a (5G)-through-Pixel 10 range, including supported Fold models, and that Android System Intelligence is current.
- For Clear Calling, confirm the phone is Pixel 7 or later and remember that call bandwidth affects availability.
- For Spatial Audio, check the phone model, the content’s audio track, the connected accessory and, for Pixel Buds Pro head tracking, the firmware.
- For built-in-speaker Spatial Audio, check whether the model is a Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10-family device or Pixel Tablet.
Headphones do not respond to Adaptive Sound
Adaptive Sound is specifically for the phone speaker. Use the headphones’ own controls or companion app for EQ, noise control and other headphone-specific processing. If the headphones support Spatial Audio, update their firmware and test with compatible content.
Sound comes from the wrong device
Open the expanded volume panel and inspect the output chooser whenever multiple Bluetooth devices are paired. Pause playback, select the intended earbuds, car system, wired adapter or phone speaker, then resume. A correct EQ can appear ineffective simply because playback moved to a route that does not use that EQ profile.
Recommended setup sequence
For the most predictable result, configure the phone in this order:
- Select the intended output: built-in speaker, wired headphones or a particular Bluetooth device.
- Set the correct volume category from the expanded volume panel.
- If using the phone speaker, enable Adaptive Sound when supported.
- If watching compatible multichannel video, test Spatial Audio and leave it enabled only when the effect suits that content and route.
- For calls, use Clear Calling on an eligible Pixel when the option is available.
- For bass and treble, adjust the EQ in the app or accessory that actually processes your audio, then verify the result on the same output route.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: changing an app-level EQ while the phone is sending sound to a different device, then assuming the Pixel system has a global tonal setting.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change the equalizer on my Google Pixel?
Google does not document a system-wide graphic equalizer for Pixel. Use the EQ in the music app you are playing or in the companion app for your headphones or adapter; it may affect only that app or accessory.
How do I adjust bass and treble on Pixel?
There are no documented global bass and treble sliders in Pixel’s Sound & vibration settings. Look for frequency controls in the specific playback app or connected audio device.
How do I make my Pixel speaker sound better?
Turn on Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound if your model is supported and Android and Android System Intelligence are current. It changes the built-in speaker for the environment without changing the volume.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does Adaptive Sound not change my headphones?
Adaptive Sound applies only to the phone’s built-in speaker. Headphones and external speakers need their own EQ or processing controls.
What is the difference between Adaptive Sound and Spatial Audio?
Adaptive Sound adapts the built-in speaker to the environment. Spatial Audio is an immersive playback feature that depends on the Pixel model, software, content, output route and, for Pixel Buds Pro head tracking, current firmware.
Why is Clear Calling unavailable during a call?
Clear Calling is supported on Pixel 7 and later, including Fold models, but Google says call bandwidth affects availability, so it may not be offered on every call.
Can Sound Amplifier change music bass and treble globally?
No. Sound Amplifier and Conversation mode are accessibility listening tools. Their frequency sliders apply within that listening experience, not as a global EQ for every app, ringtone or call.
Do I need to buy Pixel Buds or another accessory to change Pixel audio settings?
No. The phone’s volume, Adaptive Sound, Clear Calling, Spatial Audio and accessibility controls are built in where supported. Headphones, USB-C adapters and Bluetooth speakers are optional output devices.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pixel’s documented system settings do not include a global graphic equalizer. Use the separate media, call, ring, notification and alarm controls for loudness; Adaptive Sound for a supported phone speaker; Clear Calling for eligible calls; Spatial Audio for supported content and output routes; and Sound Amplifier for accessibility listening. For true bass, treble or band adjustments, use the EQ in the particular app or accessory and verify that it affects the route you are actually using.
