To choose which card Google Wallet charges when you tap your phone, change that card’s default in the Wallet app. To choose which app handles contactless payments, set Google Wallet as the phone’s default payment app in Android Settings. These are separate settings.
Change the default card used for contactless payments

Open the Google Wallet app and swipe through your cards to the one you want to use by default.

Open the card, then tap Details.

Tap Make default for pay contactless.
Google says the first payment method you add is the default initially. To check which card is currently selected, open the card order view; the default card has a contactless symbol. When you tap to pay, Google Wallet uses the selected default card, as explained in Google Wallet Help.
Use another card for just one purchase
Open Wallet, select the other card, and tap your phone at the terminal. This does not replace the saved default, so later payments continue to use the default card unless you change it.

Set Google Wallet as the phone’s default payment app
This setting determines which app handles contactless payments; it does not choose a card within Wallet.

Open Android Settings and search for NFC.

Open Contactless payments, then Payment default.

Select Google Wallet and confirm if prompted.
Android menu names and paths can vary by device. If the labels above do not appear, use Settings search for “Contactless payments” or “Payment default.” See Google’s instructions for setting up tap to pay.

Check that tap to pay is ready
Changing the card or app default will not by itself make tap to pay work. Google lists these requirements:

Your phone may need to be unlocked, or it may ask you to verify your identity. A physical card’s contactless feature does not by itself establish that the card is eligible for Google Wallet. Card availability depends on the country and issuer. If setup is declined or the card is suspended, contact the card issuer. Google’s full requirements and troubleshooting guidance are in its tap-to-pay help.
If a terminal does not accept the tap
Check NFC, the phone’s payment-app default, the card’s setup status, screen lock, device security eligibility, and whether the phone is unlocked. Also confirm that the merchant accepts mobile payments. If the card itself cannot be set up or has been suspended, ask the issuer to resolve it.

Transit payments can follow different rules
Your Wallet card default does not necessarily control every transit journey. Some transit systems accept an eligible payment card, while others require a transit pass; check the local operator’s instructions. Where a system requires taps both entering and exiting, use the same device and payment method for both. A phone and a smartwatch count as separate payment methods even if they use the same underlying card. Google also notes that a transit pass may take precedence in some smartwatch express-pay situations. See Google’s transit-payment guidance.
