In Windows 11, change the display pattern—not the computer’s actual date—through Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Regional format > Change formats. Choose a preset for Short date or Long date. For patterns that are not listed, press Windows + R, run intl.cpl, and edit the date fields under Additional settings > Date.
Change the date format from Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Time & language, then Language & region.
- Under Regional format, select Change formats.
- Choose the required preset under Short date. Change Long date too if you want expanded dates.
- Close Settings and check a Windows area that uses regional settings.
Windows 11 offers only a limited set of presets in this page, and labels can vary slightly by display language or update. This route changes the user’s regional date pattern; it does not set the clock. Microsoft’s Date & time settings are for the actual date, time, time zone, synchronization and daylight-saving controls.
Enter a custom date pattern
Use the classic Region dialog when Settings does not offer the order, separator or year length you need.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
intl.cpland press Enter. - On the Formats tab, select Additional settings.
- Open the Date tab.
- Type your pattern in Short date, Long date, or both.
- Select Apply, then OK.
You can also reach the dialog through Control Panel > Clock and Region > Region > Additional settings > Date (or Control Panel > Region, depending on the view). Microsoft documents this customization route at its regional-settings support page.

Rendering is culture-sensitive: language, region and calendar choices can affect month and weekday names or separators. Microsoft explains these differences in its global-ready formats guidance. Community examples include dd-MMM-yyyy and yyyy.MM.dd.
Short date versus Long date
Short date is the compact pattern used in many system surfaces, commonly including the taskbar—for example, 8/18/2026. Long date is an expanded form such as Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Changing Long date alone will not normally change a compact taskbar date.

Change the date shown on the taskbar
- Change Short date using Settings or
intl.cpl. - In the classic dialog, select Apply before closing it.
- Check the taskbar clock. Its visible text can still be abbreviated or combined with the time when space, scaling or taskbar layout is limited.
If the old value remains, close and reopen the affected app, restart Windows Explorer, or sign out and back in. Microsoft Community guidance identifies Short date as the regional value commonly used by the taskbar: Windows 11 date-format guidance.
Why an app or website still shows the old format
Windows regional settings influence many Windows components, but they are not a universal override. Browsers and websites, Excel cell formatting, databases, accounting systems, cloud services and apps with their own locale preferences may ignore the Windows pattern. Reopen the program after changing the setting, then inspect its language, region or date-format options. Organization-managed PCs may also enforce regional policy.

A display change does not convert stored dates or resolve ambiguous imports. For example, 04/05/2026 can mean April 5 or May 4 depending on convention. Use yyyy-MM-dd where a file, log or data exchange must be clear and sortable.
Do not confuse formatting with changing the date or region
- Date format: changes how an existing date is displayed.
- System date: changes the computer’s actual calendar date.
- Time zone: changes the zone used to calculate local time.
- Country or region: can also change number separators, currency, calendar conventions and other locale-sensitive behavior.
If you only want DD/MM/YYYY instead of MM/DD/YYYY, edit Short date rather than changing Country or region. Changing the actual system date is a separate operation; Microsoft’s Set-Date documentation notes that it requires administrator rights, unlike an ordinary user’s regional-format change.

- Re-enter the previous Short date or Long date pattern, then select Apply and OK.
- Alternatively, return to Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Change formats and choose a standard preset.
If a custom pattern is rejected or appears incorrectly, check the field and symbols, restore a preset, apply it, and sign out or restart. A non-Gregorian calendar or language-specific convention can also change the result.
