Identify your Sony headphone model first
Find the model name on the headphones or their packaging. Its location varies by product, so use Sony’s model-identification instructions rather than opening an earcup to look for identifying information. Sony’s catalog covers distinct models, including the WH-1000XM4, WH-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM6; do not assume their batteries or repair steps are interchangeable.

Sony’s WH-1000XM4 help guide says to consult a Sony dealer if the built-in rechargeable battery’s available operating time has decreased significantly. That is the documented recommendation for this model, not a universal instruction for all Sony noise-cancelling headphones.

US parts and repair support
In the United States, Sony’s parts and self-repair information identifies Encompass as its partner for Sony parts sales and self-repair solutions. Availability depends on the product and part: Sony’s Consumer’s Right to Repair notice states, “Some replacement parts may not be available for certain products.” Readers outside the US should check local Sony support rather than assume the Encompass route applies.
Can you replace the battery yourself?
A third-party iFixit WH-1000XM4 battery replacement guide describes a model-specific DIY route. It is not Sony’s consumer recommendation, and it should not be applied to other models. Before considering it, verify the exact model and the replacement battery’s type, connector and dimensions; a generic listing labeled “Sony headphones battery” is not enough to establish compatibility.

There is a safety warning specific to the WH-1000XM4. Sony Corporation’s service manual, dated May 2024, says: “Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced.” It continues: “Replace only with the same or equivalent type.” If you do not have a suitable exact-match part, appropriate tools and confidence working on the device, use the dealer or service route instead of attempting the repair.

Follow the charging and storage directions for your exact model. For the WH-1000XM4, Sony’s help guide recommends charging at ambient temperatures from 15 °C to 35 °C (59 °F to 95 °F). Check your own model’s guide before applying that range to a different headset.
