To change a Chromebook’s desktop background, right-click an empty area of the desktop, choose Set wallpaper & style, select Wallpaper, and then choose a built-in image, a local file, or a Google Photos picture. The labels below follow Google’s current Chromebook Help instructions (accessed August 18, 2026), although wording can vary slightly by ChromeOS version, language, or device.
Change your Chromebook wallpaper
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Select Set wallpaper & style.
- Select Wallpaper.
- Choose a built-in collection, My Images, or Google Photos.
- Select the image you want to apply it.
On a touchscreen Chromebook, a two-finger tap may perform a right-click. If that does not work, use the Settings route: select the time in the bottom-right corner, open Settings, choose Wallpaper and style, and select Set your wallpaper & style. You can also search Settings for Personalization. Google documents Alt + Shift + S as a shortcut for opening Settings. See Google’s Chromebook wallpaper instructions and its Settings guidance.
Use your own photo
Picture saved on the Chromebook
Open Set wallpaper & style > Wallpaper > My Images, browse to the file in Downloads or another local folder, and select it. Google lists common formats such as .jpg and .png as supported examples. If an unusual file does not appear or will not apply, save or convert it as JPEG or PNG and try again.
Picture in Google Photos
Choose Google Photos instead of My Images, then select the photo or album containing the image. A photo that exists only in your Google Photos account is not the same as a local file in the Chromebook’s Files app. If you use a shared album, its contents are not frozen: collaborators can continue adding or editing photos while the album supplies wallpaper.

Prevent blurry or awkward cropping
For the best result, use a high-resolution image with a similar general aspect ratio to the Chromebook display. Keep important subjects away from the edges because cropping can differ between screens. If the result looks stretched or soft, try a larger image or a differently cropped version. ChromeOS does not publish one universal “ideal” resolution for every Chromebook.
Choose the right wallpaper source

Make the wallpaper change automatically
Inside the wallpaper picker, look for a daily change control or a Refresh option. Daily change rotates images automatically on a schedule. Refresh manually requests another image from the selected collection. The wording and controls can differ by ChromeOS release and wallpaper collection, so not every device shows identical options.

Use Chromebook Plus wallpaper features
AI-generated wallpaper
AI wallpaper creation is limited to supported Chromebook Plus devices. Go to Set wallpaper & style > Wallpaper and select the Chromebook Plus creation option. Depending on the interface rollout, it may be labeled Create with AI or Create your own; both labels will not necessarily appear on every device.
Google’s AI instructions let you enter a prompt, choose a suggested prompt, use Inspire me, and select Create. A freeform generation can produce up to four images, and you can generate another set of four from the same prompt. Details are in Google’s Chromebook Plus AI wallpaper help.

Dawn to Dark
Some Chromebook Plus models offer time-changing wallpaper such as Dawn to Dark, paired with an animated screen saver. This is a Chromebook Plus feature, not a standard option on every Chromebook.
Change accent colors and the theme
Right-click the desktop, open Set wallpaper & style, and find Accent colors. Turn Use color sets that match your wallpaper on or off, then select a color scheme. In the same personalization area, theme controls can offer Light, Dark, and, where available, Auto scheduling. The Radiance wallpaper option is a built-in choice designed to work with light or dark themes; it is not a tool for uploading your own photo. See Google’s theme guidance.

Wallpaper and screen saver are different
Wallpaper is the image behind open windows on the desktop. A screen saver appears after the Chromebook has been idle for a period of time. Both controls are in Set wallpaper & style, but screen-saver settings are under Screen saver, not Wallpaper.
Customize the screen saver
- Open Set wallpaper & style and select Screen saver.
- Turn the screen saver on.
- Choose an animation such as Slide show, Feel the breeze, or Float on by.
- Select photos from Google Photos or artwork from Art gallery.
- Choose a duration: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or Forever.
Google documents Forever as the default duration. It also states that the screen saver runs only while the Chromebook is charging and prevents Sleep mode for the selected duration.

Sync wallpaper to another Chromebook
To use the same settings, including wallpaper, on Chromebooks signed in to the same Google Account, open Settings > Privacy and security > Sync and Google services > Manage what you sync, then turn on Sync everything. Sync depends on the account and enabled sync settings, and a school or workplace policy can limit what is available.
Why can’t I change my Chromebook wallpaper?
Your Chromebook is managed
A school or workplace administrator may block wallpaper and screen-saver changes or impose a required image. Google’s enterprise controls can also deploy a custom JPEG wallpaper under 16 MB; policy changes may take minutes and, in some cases, up to 24 hours to apply. On a managed device, contact the administrator rather than resetting the Chromebook. See Google’s administrator wallpaper documentation.
The menu or label is different
Use the universal route time > Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style. ChromeOS labels can vary slightly by release, language, device type, or staged feature rollout.
The file is unavailable
If the image is in Google Photos, choose Google Photos, not My Images. If it is local but unsupported, save it as a JPEG or PNG. If the Wallpaper and style controls are entirely missing or disabled on a school or work Chromebook, the restriction is likely policy-based.
