You can change artwork for compatible music files stored locally on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet through Samsung Music. The usual path is Samsung Music → Albums → select an album → More options (⋮) → Change cover image. However, Samsung says menus vary by device and software version, and some newer app versions may not show the album-level option.
Quick answer
Open Samsung Music, tap Albums, open the album, tap More options (the three vertical dots), choose Change cover image, select a picture, and confirm or save it.

This applies to compatible music stored on your device, such as MP3 files transferred from a computer or downloaded for local playback. It does not change artwork in Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, or another streaming service.

Change an album cover in Samsung Music
- Open Samsung Music.
- Tap Albums at the top of the screen. If the tab is not visible, check the app’s tab arrangement or available navigation options.
- Tap the album whose artwork you want to replace.
- Tap More options, usually shown as ⋮ in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Change cover image.
- Select an image from Gallery or another available image source. Some devices may also offer the camera.
- Crop the picture if Samsung Music displays cropping controls, then confirm or save it.
- Return to the album and check that the new artwork appears.
A square, clear JPEG or PNG usually produces the most conventional album-cover result. This is a practical recommendation rather than a stated Samsung requirement. If the picture is stored only in the cloud, download it to the device first.
Alternative route: start with a song
If you are already on a track or Now Playing screen, try this route:
Open the track → More options → open its album → album More options → Change cover image

What to do when “Change cover image” is missing
Do not assume the feature is available on every US Galaxy installation. Samsung’s documented path is real, but community reports say that at least some newer Samsung Music versions no longer show album-level cover editing. One report specifically mentions version 16.2.40.5; that is a user report, not confirmation that Samsung removed the feature from every device.
Try editing the track instead
- Open a track from the album.
- Tap More options.
- Open Track details.
- Tap Edit.
- Look for an artwork, image, or cover control.
- Choose the picture and save it.
If your version supports only track-level editing, you may need to repeat these steps for each song. Samsung documents editing track information but also says some songs do not support every type of modification. The reported version change is discussed in this Samsung community report.
Check that the music is local
Samsung Music can read music files stored on Galaxy internal storage, including files transferred from a PC or Mac. Samsung’s US guidance explains the local-file workflow: transfer music to a Galaxy device. Streaming tracks or protected content controlled by another app generally will not expose the same local metadata controls.

If the new image will not save
Work through these checks in order:
- Try another image. Use a normal picture already saved in Gallery rather than a cloud-only placeholder or a file currently being edited.
- Check permissions. Go to Settings → Apps → Samsung Music → Permissions and allow the relevant photo or media access. Exact labels vary by Galaxy software.
- Test a standard local file. Try a regular MP3 and a simple JPEG to determine whether the problem is tied to a particular audio or image file.
- Confirm the file is editable. Protected, unsupported, or otherwise restricted audio may not allow metadata changes.
- Close and reopen Samsung Music. The library may not redraw the artwork immediately.
- Update Samsung Music. Check the Galaxy Store for an available update.
- Use track-level editing. If album-level editing is absent, open each compatible track’s details and try Edit.
- Back up before resetting app data. Clearing cache may help refresh temporary data. Clearing app data is more disruptive because it can reset app settings, so back up important music files and settings first.
Samsung community users have reported “Unknown Error” messages while adding artwork, but those reports do not establish one universal cause or a single Samsung-approved fix. Examples include this report and its follow-up.

Will one change update every song?
Do not rely on that result. Samsung’s official instructions describe changing the album image, and older community guidance suggests one image could represent an album. But behavior can differ between versions, and some current installations reportedly require individual track edits.
Files may also be grouped as one album because their album, artist, or album-artist tags match—even when the files originally had different artwork. If you need a different image for one song, look for track-level editing rather than changing the album representation.
Can you remove the artwork completely?
Samsung documents replacing the image, not a guaranteed option to delete it or leave the cover blank. Community users report that replacement may be available without a true remove control. If you simply want to avoid showing a personal photo, replace it with a plain black, white, or neutral square image. That is a workaround, not a blank-artwork setting. See the related Samsung community discussion.
Samsung Music is not Samsung Gallery
Samsung Gallery has its own photo-album setting, often found under Album settings → Change cover image. That changes the cover for a photo album in Gallery; it does not necessarily change artwork for a music album in Samsung Music. For music, use the Samsung Music album or track-details menus instead.

Important limitation: display change versus file metadata
Samsung’s support material confirms that Samsung Music can change the displayed album image, but the available documentation does not establish that the new artwork is permanently embedded in the audio files or will follow them to another phone. If portability is important, back up the originals and consider using a separate metadata editor on the files themselves. That approach is slower and introduces its own compatibility and backup considerations.
Practical checklist
- Use a locally stored, compatible audio file.
- Prepare a square image for easier cropping.
- Open the album details page, not just the general album list.
- Look for Change cover image under More options.
- If it is missing, try Track details → Edit.
- Grant Samsung Music access to photos or media when prompted.
- Back up files before clearing app data or changing embedded metadata.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the artwork in Samsung Music change the music file everywhere?
Not necessarily. Samsung documents changing the image shown in Samsung Music, but the available documentation does not confirm that the artwork is embedded permanently in the audio file or transferred with it to another device.
Can I restore the original cover?
Only if the original image is still available or can be selected again. Before replacing artwork, save a copy of the original image or music files so you can restore it if your Samsung Music version does not provide an undo option.

Why does the album still show the old artwork after saving?
Close and reopen Samsung Music, then check the album again. If it remains unchanged, test a standard local MP3 and image, verify permissions, and try editing the track individually.
