How to Change Text Scaling Independently of Display Resolution in Windows 11

To make text bigger in Windows 11 without touching your screen’s resolution, open Settings > Accessibility > Text size, drag the Text size slider, and select Apply. Microsoft’s Support documentation states: “You can change the size of text on the screen without adjusting your screen’s resolution.” That sentence comes from its accessibility guidance for Microsoft 365 on setting up a device, and it does not name an individual author.

Why text size and resolution are separate controls

Windows 11 keeps three adjustments apart, and most confusion comes from mixing them up. Each one changes something different on screen.

Setting Where to find it What it changes When to use it
Text size Settings > Accessibility > Text size Text only, including interface text such as title bars, menus, and icon labels Text is too small, but everything else is fine
Scale Settings > System > Display > Scale & layout > Scale Text, apps, and other interface elements together The whole screen feels small and you want everything proportionally larger
Display resolution Settings > System > Display The number of pixels the display uses Rarely needed for readability; keep the option marked Recommended in typical situations

Text size is the only one of the three that enlarges text without enlarging the rest of the interface. Because it leaves resolution alone, it also avoids the image-quality problems described below.

Change text size without changing resolution

  1. Open Settings. The shortcut is Windows key + I.
  2. Select Accessibility, then select Text size. You can also press Windows key + U to open Accessibility settings directly.
  3. Drag the Text size slider to the right to enlarge the sample text. Drag it left to reduce it.
  4. Select Apply. Windows scales the text to the new size.
  5. Leave Display resolution unchanged. Changing it is not part of this procedure.

Some apps may not pick up the new size until you sign out and sign back in. Microsoft says changes apply to most things immediately, so sign out only if a specific app still shows the old text size.

When text size is not enough: changing Scale

If buttons, window chrome, and app layouts also look cramped, the Text size slider will not fix that. Use Scale instead:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
  2. Under Scale & layout, open Scale and select a percentage.

Scale enlarges apps and interface elements along with text, so content becomes larger overall rather than only the words. Microsoft generally recommends the option marked Recommended. Windows also documents custom scaling from 100% to 500%, but Microsoft does not recommend custom scaling, so use it only if the presets do not work for you.

Why you should not lower resolution to make text bigger

Lowering resolution below the display’s native value is a common workaround, and it tends to backfire. Microsoft’s guidance notes that a lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp, or make the image appear small, centered, bordered by black bars, or stretched. If text is hard to read, the Text size slider solves the problem without those side effects.

Multiple displays

If your PC has more than one display, choose the display you want to change in Settings > System > Display before adjusting its settings. Text size from the Accessibility page applies to the system as a whole, so check the result on each screen. Scale is set per display, which means a laptop panel and an external monitor can have different values.

Troubleshooting

  • The text did not change after Apply. Reopen Settings > Accessibility > Text size and confirm the slider moved. Then sign out and back in.
  • Some apps still show small text. The app may use its own font or scaling settings. Sign out and back in first, then check the app’s own display options.
  • Everything looks oversized, including menus and buttons. Text size is probably not the cause. Check Settings > System > Display > Scale and return it to the Recommended option.
  • The image looks blurry or stretched. Check Settings > System > Display and set Display resolution back to the Recommended value.

Procedures and labels may change in future Windows 11 updates. The steps above reflect Microsoft’s current Support documentation as of this writing, and no publication dates are shown on the pages reviewed.
