To change how long players can remain in sunlight before taking damage, edit the SunDamageModifier key in the server’s ServerGameSettings.json. The documented range is 0 to 5, with 1.0 as the default. A lower value lengthens the exposure period; a higher value shortens it. This setting changes sunlight damage timing, not the game’s visual brightness. Stop the server, edit the persistent settings override, save valid JSON, and restart the server before testing.

What SunDamageModifier actually changes
V Rising’s official Game Server Settings documentation describes SunDamageModifier as affecting “the duration a player may stand in the sun before starting to take damage.” It is therefore a gameplay-difficulty setting. It does not make the world look brighter or darker, change your monitor’s exposure, or alter the visual appearance of daylight.

Do not confuse this key with a graphics option. If your goal is to change screen brightness, shadows, bloom, or color, SunDamageModifier is the wrong control.

Find the settings file the server really loads
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions identify two principal configuration files: ServerHostSettings.json and ServerGameSettings.json. A setting keyword maps to a JSON key, so the sunlight control belongs in ServerGameSettings.json.
For a dedicated server, edit the persistent-data Settings override location used by the running instance. Do not rely on a copy of the shipped defaults file. Game updates can replace shipped defaults, while the persistent override is intended to hold your server’s changes.

The exact file browser and restart controls differ between those arrangements, but the setting name and JSON structure are the same. If a host exposes a configuration editor instead of a file manager, look for the game-setting entry corresponding to SunDamageModifier and confirm that the host writes it to ServerGameSettings.json.

Change the value safely: step-by-step
- Stop the server. Shut down the V Rising server instance before editing. This prevents a running process from overwriting your change when it exits or reloads.
- Back up the current settings. Make a copy of
ServerGameSettings.jsonbefore changing it. Keep the backup outside the active settings location or give it a distinct filename so the server does not try to parse it as another configuration file. - Open the persistent override. Navigate to the
Settingsdirectory belonging to the server’s persistent data and open theServerGameSettings.jsonloaded by that instance. If several V Rising installations or server instances exist, verify the path by matching the instance you actually start. - Add or edit the key. Insert the property inside the top-level JSON object, using a numeric value such as:

- Choose a value from 0 through 5. Lower numbers are intended to extend the time before sunlight damage; higher numbers are intended to reduce it. Keep the value numeric, not quoted text: use
0.5, not"0.5". - Validate the JSON. Check matching braces and quotation marks, commas between properties, and the absence of comments. Standard JSON does not allow trailing commas or explanatory text after a value. A malformed file can prevent settings from loading.
- Save the file. Preserve the filename and the
.jsonextension. Saving a second copy with a text-editor extension does not change the file the server reads. - Restart the server. Start the instance again after saving. Stunlock’s 1.0 patch notes state that the vast majority of server-setting changes take effect after restarting the server or loading the game.
- Test in sunlight. Join with a character, step into direct sunlight, and observe when the damage starts. Change the number incrementally rather than making several unrelated configuration changes at once, so you can identify which edit produced the result.
How to choose a useful value
Because Stunlock does not publish a conversion from the modifier to seconds, treat the setting as a tuning scale rather than a timer. Start from the documented default of 1.0, make a modest change, restart, and test the same situation. Record the value and your observed result if you are balancing a long-running multiplayer world.

Making sunlight less deadly
Choose a value below 1.0 when players need more time to cross exposed terrain, gather resources, or recover from an unexpected daylight transition. A lower value changes the onset of damage; it does not remove the need to manage daylight or guarantee immunity.
Making sunlight more dangerous
Choose a value above 1.0 when you want daylight exposure to create greater pressure. Higher values shorten the period before damage begins. Test with the equipment, buffs, and travel routes your players normally use, because a setting that feels fair in one situation may be harsh during another.
Testing the endpoints
Both 0 and 5 are inside the documented range, but the official material does not provide a behavioral description for every point or promise a particular number of seconds. If you test an endpoint, do so on a backup or test server first and confirm the result in actual gameplay before applying it to a shared world.

Why a change may appear not to work
You edited the wrong copy
The most common configuration mistake is changing a shipped defaults file or an unused installation rather than the persistent Settings override loaded by the active server. Recheck the instance’s data location and confirm the edited file has the exact name ServerGameSettings.json.
The server was not restarted
Save operations alone are not a reliable activation method. Stop and start the server after editing, then reconnect and test. The official guidance describes restarting the server or loading the game as the normal point at which most settings take effect.
A difficulty preset is overriding the value
Current configuration guidance warns that a named difficulty preset in ServerHostSettings.json can override individual values from ServerGameSettings.json at startup. If your numeric value keeps reverting or has no observable effect, inspect ServerHostSettings.json for a configured preset. Determine whether that preset is intended to supply the game settings, then change the preset arrangement or its associated configuration so the sunlight value you want is not replaced during startup.
The JSON is invalid
One missing comma, an extra comma, mismatched brace, or a quoted number can prevent the setting from being read correctly. Restore the backup if necessary, reapply only the SunDamageModifier edit, and validate the complete file with a JSON-aware editor before restarting.

The number is outside the documented range
Use a value between 0 and 5, inclusive. If you entered a negative number, a value above 5, or non-numeric text, replace it with a documented-range value and restart.
Another change is masking the test
Weather, shelter, time of day, character state, or other gameplay circumstances can make a test inconsistent. Test the same character in comparable direct-sunlight conditions, and change only one server setting between trials. The setting controls the duration before damage begins; it is not a visual indicator that can be judged from the brightness of the scene.
Direct JSON override versus a difficulty preset

If you need one custom sunlight behavior while retaining other custom settings, verify which source has authority at startup. A value visible in the game-settings file is not proof that it wins over a host-level preset.
Self-hosted and managed servers

The hosting model changes access and restart procedure, not the documented key. If a provider’s interface does not expose the setting, use its documented file-editing method or ask support where the active ServerGameSettings.json is stored. Do not assume that editing a local client file changes a remote server.

- Announce a short maintenance window and stop the server.
- Back up both
ServerGameSettings.jsonandServerHostSettings.jsonbefore changing anything. - Check whether a named difficulty preset is configured in the host settings.
- Set one
SunDamageModifiervalue within 0–5. - Validate the JSON and restart the server.
- Test direct sunlight with a repeatable route or location.
- Ask players whether the new exposure window solves the specific problem you were targeting.
- Adjust in small increments, restarting and testing after each change.
- Record the accepted value and keep the previous files as a rollback point.
This process avoids attributing a result to the wrong file or to a preset that silently replaces the value at startup.
